Very much this. This thread has been around a decade or more, as have many of its posters. It's basically an institution. Someone who just jumped in a couple of weeks ago with the clear intention to troll it manages to get it moved/split/replaced? They're going to view that as a victory for them and rightly so. I would go so far as to say they made that suggestion in bad faith.

Edit: is there an actual rule a thread can only have one IK?

I think they'd be tripping over one another if there were more, except in cases where you want a thread watched enough that it needs several people in shifts. UKMT isn't really one of those, though, as we are mostly on UK time.

So if I'm getting his thinking right, he believes everyone to the left of him is a Marxist, and everything he doesn't like is 'woke'? And he's under the illusion that every poster other than himself in this thread is a some kind of single entity that has equally shared beliefs and ideals?

I'm actually jealous that his thought processes are that simple. Life sounds very woolly and padded in that soft brain of his.

happy car is happy

Ugh you know it's bad when BBC news has to dedicate a page explaining that no, a 15 minute city is not a city where the council stop you travelling 15 minutes to go somewhere or decide how often you can go to the shops.

quote:

Conspiracy theories linking "15-minute cities" to sinister ploys to control people may once have been the preserve of fringe groups on social media, but have they now entered the mainstream of British politics?

Speaking at the Conservative Party conference on Monday, Transport Secretary Mark Harper said he was "calling time on the misuse of so-called '15-minute cities'".

Originally an urban planning concept, the "15-minute city" idea is aimed at providing people in cities with basic services within a quarter of an hour's walk or bike ride of where they live.

"There's nothing wrong with making sure people can walk or cycle to the shops or school," said Mr Harper. "That's traditional town planning."

"What is sinister and what we shouldn't tolerate is the idea that local councils can decide how often you go to the shops and that they ration who uses the roads and when, and they police it all with CCTV."

But this is not an accurate characterisation of "15-minute cities".

They do not give councils special powers to restrict people's freedom of movement. And, while they are meant to reduce car traffic, they do not stop people from using other forms of transport.

Mr Harper did not respond to the BBC's requests to clarify his comments, which appear to echo conspiracy theories about sinister plots linked to the concept of "15-minute cities".

If anything, the BBC posting this will just reinforce the fuckwits into believing the conspiracy more. The BBC is fake news NWO/WEF illuminati propaganda run by Bill Gates or something.

How come the UKMT has it's own rules that aren't the D&D rules? What are the rules for this thread? Are there any other threads that also have their own rules and are they listed somewhere?

Don't really understand what Sunak gets out of being PM. Truss and Johnson seemed at least to want to exist in a position where action can be taken/seen to be taken. also lol at councils having enough money to pull something like this off. Half of them are bankrupt and the other half are just barely managing to provide the basic services they have to. And in this sort of world, people genuinely think that councils are gonna have enough money/manpower/time to enforce 15 minutes cities somehow?? Even with an infinite budget it'd be a stretch.

Based on how he has functioned as PM I am guessing that he misunderstood the nature of the position and thought it was going to be his job to directly manage the cabinet, and he wanted to be a manager.

The UKMT does not have an overly restrictive written constitution of 'rules'. It simply functions on convention and old heads acting as remembrancers to ensure that the standard decorum is maintained. Otherwise we get some American mod barreling in banning people for using the word oval office.

SNCF definitely benefited from the long-term planning and management that nationalised technocratic organisations are suited to.

By planning and costing almost the entire TGV network in one go, even when it would be built in phases across decades, the French were able to build and maintain skills, procedures, equipment and processes so that each TGV line progressively became easier to build because they were employing people who had done little else.

It was the same when the (private) Japanese railways did electrification - they deliberately chose to proceed at a relatively slow but relentless pace, employing small teams who became experts at building electric railways and ended up being able to do it quicker and cheaper than anywhere else in the world.

The UK always shoots itself in the foot with a famine/feast approach to this big-scale stuff. The gap between HS1 and HS2 was just long enough for all the people involved to retire, retrain or go elsewhere so all the skills, from the planning to the project management to the actual construction, had to be bought in (expensive) or regenerated (expensive and slow). Before HS1 BR had built the Selby Diversion and electrified the ECML...having lost most of the in-house skills from doing the WCML thanks to time and privatisation.

The recent exception seems to be the National Shipbuilding Strategy, which aims to ensure a steady multi-decade flow of work by interlacing various RN and RFA projects to stop the endless cycle of up-skilling and de-skilling, and also aiming to build certain specialist skills in particular locations. And so far it seems to actually be working.

This is a good post and I generally feel that all the media reports saying that Sunak will cancel HS2 mainly exist to pressure him into cancelling HS2.

Related, how would Sunak actually cancel HS2? Approval for the stretch to Manchester for example has already passed through Parliament as a Hybrid Bill, as I understand it. Would he just direct the Treasury not to give them the money for it?

This arrangement pre-dates the new D&D rules which I think everyone agrees would basically destroy the communities in these threads.
