You know what Pluto is of course. A little further out is what's called the Oort cloud, a region of small objects in a ring around our solar system. Even though said objects are much closer to us than say the nearest star and it's planets, any objects in the cloud are very hard to see because they don't give of any light and aren't reflecting much light unlike closer objects like Mars, Venus, Saturn, ect Nevertheless, we have discovered several objects there. One reason that Pluto was demoted from being a planet is because if Pluto is a planet, then there are possibly several dozen small objects in the Oort cloud that would also be planets, which is just silly. There may also be a very large planet, something the size of Jupiter in the cloud region. Said planet, sometimes called X or Nemesis, could have a very long ecliptic orbit like a comet, where it periodically comes very close to the sun before zooming back out to the outer reaches of the solar system. There are different theories. If it's a Jupiter or brown dwarf star, it's massive gravity fucks up the earth and causes our periodic mass extinctions. If it's a smaller earth like planet, it's where the aliens live. This is separate from the counter earth theory, which is that a second earth like planet exists in our orbit directly across from us, so that the sun is always between the two planets. What does this have to do with biosphere collapse you ask? As things get worse, two separate escapist fantasies will become more common. One is that aliens or other forces exist and will help us, that there are other habitable planets we can escape to, and second that the earth is periodically destroyed by outside forces, so really what we did to the planet isn't so bad, we were doomed anyway.
