David's not my favourite narrator, but #5 is a great book, really does a lot for his character.

There's only seven books, right? So that means Jalil doesn't get any more narration unless we do a round robin like the last animorphs book.

There are twelve! However, one of them is narrated by Senna, which screws up the cycle and cheats us out of a Jalil book. It's a bummer, I love reading his thoughts.

I feel like they could cause all kinds of chaos by just saying, "Oh, Dahgda was eaten by Ka Anor? So who was that in ice up with Hel?" Though I get why saying that to the dragon who looted his goodies might not be in their best interest at this exact moment.

We are finishing up this book's recap chapters but I'm already loving David's perspective now that we got the stranger in a strange land stuff out of the way in the first book. This bit, "People's motivations, all their deep, dark stuff, I don't get. Not usually, anyway. Or else I get it a week later than everyone else." Is extremely relatably teenager, but I wonder how realistic it is for someone with this lack of empathy to have the E.Q. to recognize it in themselves?

It’s cool to see Christopher’s natural dickishness channeled into something productive here - he’s got something to add to the group, even if that’s just “lying to strangers”. Also this bit: Soonmot posted:Couldn't help it. Too much bad in my head. Too much fear-sweat dried on my skin. Too much adrenaline residue in my veins. Yeah the Satyrs here are some real body horror that stuck with me for a long time. And man I forgot how present rape and the threat of rape was in these books overall, and how frankly it deals with it.

Yeah, David is a total mess. Like just compounded trauma which has really warped him. And its interesting that he holds himself to some insane standards for things the others have mostly not seen or cared about but ignores/downplays all the reasons they actually distrust them.

Even when the kids know they're being played Senna is still able to gently caress with them. And while I don't doubt Jalil is correct about her motivations for that little sob speech, I definitely think that she's definitely pulling from a very real well of emotion inside of her. Like she definitely dragged April into this because she hates her, because April fit in back on Earth while Senna was the weird and unwanted affair child.

I'm sure Christopher is still being lovely internally but man, I like him a lot more in this book than I did in the previous four. It feels like he's got a bit more direction and is taking some time to think through what he says, even if it's just to find a funnier barb.

Senna is like Applegrant wanted to have a David style dynamic except she's actually smart, a pro manipulator, and has some advantages the others don't. Also, thank you for keeping the Let's Read going.

Man I totally forgot about David cold cocking Senna here, but it was fun to see him actually put her completely off her game and you get to see how viciously serious she is about taking revenge. She went right for his deepest shame and pain and just ripped it open as brutally as you can.

And we're just gonna finish the book today since I didn't post yesterday. Despite being cool on David in his first book, I really came to like him throughout this one. This was a fun read and, i think, it's as others have said, the kids are being proactive at last.quote:

Honestly I really remember a bunch from these chapters, no idea why they stuck with me but David deliriously shifting back and forth and his little talk about running on Childhood 1.0 with all your fears stacked on top of it are things I remember even 20 years later.

Jalil and Christopher fail to save April but succeed in maybe starting the industrial revolution. David doesn't exactly break his chains, but he maybe gets on the path to doing so. The kids get kicked out of maybe the only nice place in the world. Senna doesn't do any gateway stuff, but regardless there's some sort of Everworld-type presence in the Old World, and Old World ideas continue to leak into Everworld. And K.A.A. is taking us to meet K.A.
