Learned today that apparently turkey was funding studies into the melungeon myth. If you don't know what melungeons are, they're a group of hillbillies who claim they're descendants of turks.

quote:

To counter Armenian political activities in Washington, the Turkish government regularly reaches out to anyone who could be co-opted with all-expense-paid trips, special gifts, and other financial inducements, including funding studies and conferences on the alleged Turkish origin of Melungeons. Even though these one million Appalachians do not carry much political clout in Congress, Ankara is interested in claiming them to be of Turkish descent, hoping to strengthen its political and economic clout in the United States.

The West African countries of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali are in rebellion against their former colonial masters, while the imperialists of the Global North try desperately to contain the situation. But the portrayal of these developments as mere “coups” hides the depth of popular anger, particularly against the French? What almost no one else is telling is the story of popular movements and organizations in West Africa who are supporting the military transition governments. Where do they come from? Could this spill over into other African countries? Where does pan-Africanism fit in? Where do Russia and China fit in, if at all?

To discuss this and more, Rania Khalek was joined by Kambale Musavuli, an activist, writer, and analyst with the Center for Research on the Congo.

Azerbaijan reissues Nagorno-Karabakh map with street named after Turkish leader of 1915 Armenian genocide

quote:

Two weeks after the surrender of Nagorno-Karabakh following a lightning-fast military offensive, on Tuesday, October 3, Azerbaijan re-issued a map of the capital of the former Armenian separatist enclave (Stepanakert in Armenian, Khankendi in Azerbaijani), with street names in Azerbaijani. One of these streets is named after Turkish military officer Enver Pasha, one of the main instigators of the Armenian genocide of 1915. The map was first published in August 2021.

This has put me in a foul mood.

In Istanbul, if a student lives in a house with three people, their monthly costs can rise up to 12,535 TL.

The Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA) announced the results of the Student Living Cost Study.

Based on data from September 2023, the study calculated how much the monthly and annual living costs of a university student living in Istanbul changed.

The calculations were based on primary and secondary data related to essential expenditure items such as housing, grocery and outside dining expenses, bill payments, culture and art, stationery, personal care, and transportation expenses, which can be described as elements forming the specific living cost for students.

IPA stated, "Housing is the largest expenditure item for students in big cities; the needs of young people attending higher education have become more costly with increasing inflation rates."

According to IPA's Student Living Cost Study; the living cost of a university student staying in a private dormitory increased almost twofold in just one year. If a student lives in a house with three people, their monthly cost increased by 134% within a year, rising from 5,357 TL to 12,535 TL, surpassing the minimum wage.

### Housing expenditure, which was 1,900 TL, rose to 6,250 TL this year

According to the study; in the 2022-2023 academic year, the monthly housing expense of a student staying in a private dormitory was 3,300 TL, while this figure rose to 10,360 TL this year. A student who rents a house with two other people had housing expenses of 1,900 TL last year, but this amount increased to 6,250 TL this year. Another significant monthly item, grocery spending, was 550 TL for a dormitory-residing student last year, and this year's grocery and outside dining expenses rose to 2,287 TL. A student who allocated 1,780 TL to this item last year now has to set aside 3,797 TL this year.

honestly this all seems kinda optimistic in its estimates. at best this seems like the expenses for people far outside the city center where most of the big universities are. certainly that “groceries and eating out” part can mean “only groceries”. loving 200 lira for a goddamn cheeseburger in the uni neighborhoods, you aren’t eating out on a 2k food budget. the rent is about what I pay, but it’s also like half what any new lease in my working class area would go for. maybe they’re assuming students are commuting from Pendik or something.

I passed through paris and brussels this past summer and I'd say they were probably cheaper in dollars than lots of Istanbul is.

usually if I'm too lazy to cook at home i go to one of those workers cafeterias where you can still get a decent meal for like 50 lira or so. they aren't able to chase gulf state tourist money so the prices stay in a sane place

That is one thing I noticed about Istanbul; it really wasn't that cheap even if you had dollars. Perhaps a bit cheaper than the US, but more expensive than parts of Europe. Anyone with lira has had their savings long since liquidated, and anyone working a job is seeing their income drop in real time.

Institute of Economic Justice made a good statement about the South African budget:

https://www.iej.org.za/iej-statement-claims-that-south-africa-is-heading-towards-a-fiscal-crisis-are-exaggerated/

quote:

Today the Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) publishes research that shows reports of an immediate and acute ‘fiscal crisis’ in South Africa are being exaggerated for political purposes.

IEJ Executive Director, Dr Gilad Isaacs, explains : “Our analysis shows that the much-discussed revenue shortfall is within historical norms and well within the government’s ability to close. The data does not support claims that we are standing on the edge of a so-called ‘fiscal cliff’ or ‘financial crisis’. National Treasury is likely stoking panic to push through unnecessary and unpopular budget cuts.”

...

National Treasury’s political campaign

While South Africa does face fiscal challenges, National Treasury seems determined to force through spending cuts and to terminate or limit programmes it is opposed to – including the highly-successful Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant and the Presidential Employment Initiative.

The leader of Hamas’s military wing says the group has launched a new operation against Israel.

In a rare public statement, Mohammed Deif said that 5,000 rockets had been fired into Israel early Saturday to begin “Operation Al-Aqsa Storm”. Israel also reported an infiltration from Gaza.

“We’ve decided to say enough is enough,” Deif said as he urged all Palestinians to confront Israel.
