Same for returns of online items in store, which AT&T explicitly says you can do. Also anyone who attempts this is a lazy entitled piece of poo poo. Nice folks. I’m not ATT but yup, I would just ship back for any carrier trade in via return label. Stores are overworked , understaffed, and hate taking returns. The worst was people returning $250 AirPods which would hurt the store sales metrics as if they were the reason and your number went down by $250. Huge pet peeve of mine.

I don’t know how savvy your kids are but you could also do something like set up a dns(?) filter to just silently block connections to TikTok. I use an app called NextDNS that blocks ads system wide but there are options to block games and porn and stuff like that too. Your kid, or anyone really, probably would never think to dig that deep into the system settings to figure it out.

The major problem in my social circle's experience is that if a child of sufficient age bypasses your lockdowns, that is like kid heroin and they will do loving anything to get that high again. Something a savvy parent could use to brute force technical literacy, for sure. One of my friend's kids has successfully rigged an entire system of compliance in which he gets Robucks (the currency from Roblocks) every time his parents want him to do something. Like, he reverse engineered his own system of rewards. Kids are fuckin' devious. Granted they're busy and I guess kinda pushovers by default, but drat. A kid who understands the power they wield is one of the most dangerous forces in the world. Taima fucked around with this message at 13:24 on Oct 4, 2023 |

Not to belabour the point but children are the exact demographic who will 100% learn how to get around your block between them and TikTok. Maybe they'll even learn about effective use of google/forums in order to do so in the process. It will take them maybe an hour tops. You will probably never even know that they've done this because they'll get around it in a sneakier way than your implementation of it. When I was 12 the most valuable cultural currency at school was knowing the steps to get around the content blockers in the library computers in order to be able to get onto Miniclip or what have you (and also the shortcuts to quickly hide stuff if a teacher walked by).

There's an old line about how if you want to know how to disable any internet security layer, ask a school class. As soon as one person figures it out the whole thing spreads. When I was in school everyone knew about this one path to look at porn on the school computers that followed a convoluted hyperlink chain from the front page of Lycos that completely went around the filter system. Everyone knew how to access the various games the IT techs installed on the network share in case of boredom, that's how I first played Doom.

Yeah and NextDNS works on both WiFi and cellular. When something is blocked there’s no indication that it’s blocked. It just doesn’t load. There’s nothing saying “this website has been blocked by your administrator”. Unless your kid already knows what dns is, something 99% of the population don’t know, they would have absolutely no reason to poke around for these options or even know to change them.

The nice thing about NextDNS is that the filters will work both on and off WiFi so unless the kid knows that DNS is the one doing the blocking and change it to a different one, it's going to be a decent solution. Jamf would work well too but the kids are probably going to wipe the phone and go through a ton of hoops just so they don't have those blocks lol

My 2020 SE is close to kicking the bucket so I guess its time for me to get a modern phone. I still have many dongles, chargers, etc, with the Lightning port, so would it be safe to say that I should look at the 14 line and not the 15? I am also not a fan of huge phones/huge screens but I would love huge battery life. It has been years since I've a/b-ed phones but it seems like the iPhone 14 Pro might be my best bet?

The chargers should have swappable cords, so changing them to usb-c shouldn't be an issue. As for the dongles, put them up on samart/fb market/etc and upgrade. Also the 14 pro and Max are the heaviest iphones in their size class. Just get a 15. The 48>12mp image cropping gives you a free telephoto option, usb-c supports faster charging, and it's a modern connector instead of a standard Apple was already moving away from. The peak brightness outdoors is higher, too. As for size, it's only 4mm wider. 3mm if you get a 15 pro, which is the narrowest non-SE phone Apple sells now. Or you can geta used 13 mini, which is narrower than the SE, uses lightning, gets brighter, and has considerably better battery life Mister Facetious fucked around with this message at 17:24 on Oct 4, 2023 |

Is there any sort of matrix comparing these attributes across 13/14/15 and the various permutations? The only piece that would give me pause with a used phone is the battery life. Right now mine is pitiful even after having it replaced with a third party battery a few months back.

I don't know if you can do it with Jamf Now, but in the normal Jamf Pro, you can put the devices in an automatic enrollment that forces them into your mdm after a wipe like that. You can also restrict the ability for users to even wipe the device in the first place, but there's ways around that using a computer to boot the phone into dfu mode (or whatever it's called now). You can also setup an activation lock so after a wipe like that they would need an Apple ID to finish the setup. have find my/activation lock setup with your Apple ID. Ultimately, like in a work environment there's only so much you can do in using technology to solve a people problem.

Held the Pro Max in the Apple Store the other day and have come to the conclusion that until there’s a gesture that makes the control centre reachable when using the phone in your left hand, I can straight up never buy the big phone. I don’t get how they don’t just let you pick which corner you can swipe down from to get it, it’s not like it’ll conflict with anything else. Though frankly, a swipe from the bottom would be MUCH more comfortable at any size.
