Echoing this post hard, I always enjoyed 40k in the form of videogames, grinding through the wikis back in the late 2000s and reading the Horus Heresy books as they were coming out but never really felt like I could handle taking the plunge into the actual models until about a year ago when I turned 30 and decided it was time to give the actual physical hobby a try. Here's to another year of building, painting, maybe playing, and asking you all when we will get an EC codex.

Me about a week ago: I'm gonna paint my Sisters of Battle and do nothing else. It's way overdue.

Also me: Here are some Deathwatch boys I customed up over the last week, using Black Templar primaris bits, some cool bits I got from a Kickstarter that I had forgotten about, and I don't know, assault intercessors and stuff.

Jump Captains!

Jump Intercessors! (I have like eleven of them but they are all pretty much this)

Foot Captain! (This was a Sergeant something that was a freebie at one point I think?)

Deathwatch Veterans!

Company Heroes! (Okay, just one. I made the whole squad but really the candles on the heavy bolter are why I wanted to share).

Had a fun time playing my 3rd game last night!

I tried the multi launcher for the exorcist, and tbh I see why people say to avoid it. While it's fun potentially rolling 18 attacks, having only 5 strength and 0 AP means it basically managed to hit like 3 times versus my opponents Tyranids. I'd way rather have 1D6+2 attacks at 10 strength and -2 AP, even if they're affected by cover. Especially since I can miracle dice in the attack role if I happen to roll a 5 or a 6 and guarantee most of the attacks

It definitely went a lot better than my previous games. I think I need to be much more aggressive about getting my units into combat, and actually remember to do the missions rather than just getting very excited for shooting dudes. But hey, at least I remembered all my rules this time!

Going to finish priming stuff this weekend and start working on the paint for real, but how do y'all transport your armies? I see the recommendations in the OP but they're fairly pricey, so I'd rather make something for now and upgrade later since I'm not even sure what the rest of my army is going to be.

I'm going to glue magnets to the base, so I was thinking I can maybe just get a sheet of metal or something that could fit in a smaller plastic storage bin and just stick them in there for now, but I see some people making them out of foam blocks which seems pretty easy as well. Also RIP my poor novitiate leader's cool whip. Fell over during the game and got stuck on something when being moved

Clean break though so I can just glue it back together

Your main options for lining a plastic box are either rubber steel sheets or just having sheet metal cut to the size of your box. Some magnetic sheets aren't magnetic enough to hold your minis in place so it can be a pain to find what works.

Also make sure you have the magnets pointing the same way or you'll have bases getting stuck to each other.

I built them a couple months ago and you can indeed build every specialist plus two regular boyz with the box. Which is amazing coverage compared to most kill teams. Just magnetize the Nob's arm to swap klaw and choppa. My only warning is that several of those thick ork necks and/or fat heads cannot easily swap between bodies - be ready with greenstuff or a knife if you change the faces from what the box recommends.

I guess basically something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Litko-Game-Accessories-Flexible-Magnetically-Receptive/dp/B00M1UAF6G?th=1? Or could I even just use a sheet of sticky magnet backing stuff? I presume a small rare earth magnet would stick pretty good to a magnet backing material?

Or yeah, just finding somewhere that can cut me metal to size I suppose. Edit: Actually I guess it's going to be really thin, I might as well just buy some snips and a thin metal or whatever and cut it myself :hmmyes:

This is what I use: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3WMCTG3

30ml thickness was enough to keep my models attached even upside down.

However I did have to use greenstuff to glue the magnets to the base, as using just superglue creates too big a gap between the magnet and the sheet. Greenstuff gave me a little adhesive mound to put the magnet on which closed the gap. Epoxyglue also works I think.

That's the exact one I've used, yeah. It lets the magnets hold much more strongly than the flexible magnetic sheets I was using before, which are mostly still strong enough on their own but I'm only using the flexible magnetically receptive sheets going forward.

I got you if you live somewhere with an ikea?
I thoroughly recommend the KVISSLE letter tray ,you can then turn the trays upside down and you have ready made sheets and a box!

Then if your wanting a cheap carry case you just get a Cajon drum case, something like this for super cheap and it fits pretty well.

Then when your ready to upgrade their are loads of cases specially made to accommodate the KVISSLE like this one i have from tabletop tyrant , I used to cycle to my club with this on my back without any problems. Plus deliveroo drivers have helped remove the stigma of stupid backpacks!

Also also! as your collection grows you can just buy more KVISSLES and stack them on top of each other in your cupboard.

I’m 100% in favor of smashing the million marine/csm variants of the same thing with a totally unhelpful name into one thing. What’s an Incelsior Jordaniuanus TM dread? Oh it’s a ven dread with x and y. Cool let’s call it that. Also do this for knights, russes, and the baneblades. Being an infantry lover and only vaguely following for a while during hiatus, I know all these things by their names but not the difference between a Shadowpunisher TM baneblade and a Swordtempestus TM baneblade. Bonus for dreads, pick the coolest one and give it the appropriate weapons instead of hoping it’s got the best rules.

Speaking of thunderhawks, has anyone seen an irl Manta? Has anyone, anywhere, put it on the table? It has index rules iirc.

I can't speak for GW's official events, but I've been to LVO and NOVA a few times each along with some smaller stuff. Vibes at a ham event are generally pretty good. Outside of some weirdos, everyone is happy to be there, rolling dice and showing off their models while admiring others'. NOVA is probably the closest equivalent I've been to. It's all about organized events during the day, ranging from competitive to casual. At night you have the option of playing in more events or just hanging out on open tables playing whatever you want with your pals. That's my preferred way to go, but sometimes a certain game is only offered at night. That's probably not a problem at the official events though. If you're doing open gaming, don't be afraid to be a little pushy to set up games, especially if you don't know anyone else there. People will generally be very friendly, but if you sit there on your phone playing the wallflower you won't get to play.

I was thinking of attending the Tampa event too, but it doesn't look like my schedule will work out that way. I would've been going for Kill Team or Shadespire though, not 40k. I thought about playing Blood Bowl, but I don't think going to an event is the best way to reintroduce myself to it. I miss that game.

Vulkan is also a source of army-wide wound rerolls, which they seem to want to do away with here, and his synergy in an army that already wants to load up on land raider redeemers may have ended up being a little bit too much.

Feels like pre-emptively nerfing his points was too much, they should have given it a few months in practice before pulling the trigger - the new focus on transports may or may not actually fix the old Salamanders problem of how to beat a decent shooting army that outranges them.

There had been some question before of how you keep VHS alive in a cost effective way - infernus marines were the only unit he could lead that had real synergy with him, but they’re a questionable pick even as pure Salamanders - but he’s actually one of the few obvious use cases to lead one of the new Company Heroes unit.
