It's also the Pacer number

The Northern Ireland Secretary will determine if they feel that there may be a majority in favour of reunification. So all the Brits have to do is maintain the tradition of having terrible NI ministers.

If there is a border poll does the Republic also hold one, or is just assumed that they'd quite like the top of their island back?

Its just Keir sucking up to the DUP.
Backup plan in case they need a coalition.

He'll do seventy eleven u-turns on it before the poll situations arise anyway.

It's not set in the GFA I don't think, just skimmed it and cant see anything definite.
But I think there will be a similar one around the same time in the Republic too.

I think there'd have to be even if in a roundabout way. SF now state they want to keep some kind of transitional regional assembly even after reunification, which would mean amending the Irish constitution to grant validity to that, which would mean a referendum that would be de facto a poll on reunification.

It's written into Bunreacht na hÉireann now

quote:

It is the firm will of the Irish nation, in harmony and friendship, to unite all the people who share the territory of the island of Ireland, in all the diversity of their identities and traditions, recognising that a united Ireland shall be brought about only by peaceful means with the consent of a majority of the people, democratically expressed, in both jurisdictions in the island.

So that requires a Southern border poll as well. Fairly positive it's in the GFA text in some form as well.

E: it would be an absolute shocker if it didn't pass by a large margin tho

Ah, thanks. And yeah prob is in the GFA.

As for the margin, I don't know. A looooot of people in the north wouldn't like to suddenly lose their NHS and have to pay for healthcare. And the south is getting a lot of benefits and such that need to be paid.
There's going to be a subset of the population who were getting free care, now have to do without or virtually go penniless to get the same amount in the south. A fair lock will just die from the change over on waiting lists alone.
That is assuming there aren't protections, seeing how brexit was handled I wouldn't bet on there being many.

Oh I just meant it would pass by a large margin down South. Reckon its always gonna be fairly close-run up North.

Though the NHS is essentially fictional now and Ireland already has socialised healthcare (albeit a weird mixed model, and it's just as poo poo at provision as the NHS)

People, much like orcas, are designed to be part of pods. We don't do well by ourselves, maybe it doesn't even make sense to think of people as discrete monads. These weirdos basically don't have authentic real-life relationships with people who will tell them "bruh"
