i can see why it might be done if the restaurant is noisy or w/e and it's a sensitive kid. but it's deffo a choice (esp with such a young kid) and the parents have to wear it. they probably don't care anyway about any shade if they felt they had no real choice to make a night out work

imma assume most of the time it’s just lazy parenting and not a necessity but you can’t really judge that from the outside

when in thailand saw this family (dad was a huge beer gutted euro rear end in a top hat) and the kid was ipad and headphone the entire time. no swimming in the pool no nothing.

hard not to judge tbh

yeah and this is why it’s hard to assume anything about parenting

like you might be witnessing someone’s straw that broke the camels back but from your perspective it looks like they’re a poo poo parent

so I try not to judge. except that euro rear end in a top hat coz I watched them for half a week lol

sometimes kids are just in a bad mood, most of my kids class moved onto preschool so he was in room with strangers and he was real grumpy for like 3 weeks, now he’s back to normal

it was thankfully a clip in a longer youtube video. but still my eyes did pop out a little when i saw that.

it's kind of amazing how well screens capture attention even for younger kids. our boy is 9 months now and if i pull up some video he'll watch it for like 10 or 15 minutes pretty intently.

we almost always avoid that, but he was just really fussing one time and i'm like ok let's watch bill nye the science guy for a bit so we can all calm down.

i knew LJ was smart when I was watching nausicaa one night when he was super little and he lost his poo poo with joy when the baby bug was united with the mommy bug. there's no swelling music or people cheering or anything, the only way that scene is something to get excited about is if you've been paying attention and more or less understood the plot. my mind was blown.

we were like "oh ho we will be proper parents and not screens!" but there are times when it's just easier to do it for a bit like in the gap between "ordered food" and "received food" while hungry

but also we are super bad about mornings where she'll wake up at 0630 and whoever is doing wake-up will take her downstairs and just stick the TV on and sleep on the sofa for 45 minutes.

probably too much TV at weekends if I'm honest *but* she loves books and is perfectly happy wandering around spouting absolutely crazy monologues about her various toys and how naughty they've been

in summar, B+ not the best not the worst

i did these things a lot when my first born was very young, too, yeah.

their mom and i had zero help (not hyperbole) from family and friends for the first six years so if we wanted to go out for dinner and be able to have a conversation for longer than 45 seconds, we broke out the ipad with downloaded shows on it. you gotta do what you gotta do to get through it sometimes

I work with a young woman who for a 17yo is quite well adjusted and socialises well and seems very normal, and I was telling her about how I am concerned that if I let my kids they would scroll reels all day long and worried about what that does for development and she said “I was like that until like a year or so ago”

an ole girlfriend of mine was barely allowed to watch any tv growing up and as soon as she moved out of home she basically watched tv every moment it was possible

there are also times when she just gets totally zoned out from being tired. like after nursery or if we've been out etc. she gives it 100% whatever she's doing and then just wipes out later on.

As long as you're conscious of actual screen time and trying to do the right thing I think you're doing OK. Like our kids don't get screen time outside of school/learning apps during the week, but they get a chunk on weekend mornings, and on flights all bets are off.
We don't do screens at restaurants because that's what coloring or chatting with your family's for, but with a younger or only child it can be harder.

drat I met up with an old friend and her son has just turned 14

and is about 6 foot weighs 90kg (about 170lb?), had vapes all around his room, used condoms, she caught him chopping up weed, coz he’s dumb enough to not realise weed stinks and adults can’t tell. her ex and the dad is a cop and he sounds like a mega dick, his response to these kinds of things is to pin him on the ground and tell him he’d kick his rear end if he wasn’t a kid. she’s like what can I do?

such a poo poo sandwich of a situation. her other kids are fine but a bit wild. but wow lol, doubt his issue is too much screen time lol

also I told her I was gonna put her in the iso cubes and got "I don't want to go to the iso cubes", that's right so stop trying to rip the book I'm reading you out of my hands. I don't think she's picked that one up though so I'm not gonna get in trouble for raising Judge Dredd

my wife fell while holding our boy yesterday. thankfully he's totally fine, we went to the doctor right after and he checked out, and he's been acting normal since then. a little cranky but he's also just getting a 2nd tooth.

my wife's pretty upset over the whole thing which makes sense but still sucks. she's got cerebral palsy so she's prone to falling over in the first place. she didn't even trip over anything, just kinda fell down in the hallway. then she tripped and fell while she was out taking her daily walk.

he's been climbing over small things now and pulling himself up so i've had to get rid of all of that to make sure he doesn't bonk his head again for a while

thankfully babies are made of jelly. she’ll be gutted tho. when you’re parenting a child for a good decade or more before they’re independent, stuff like this will inevitably happen. hope she can reassure herself that acute accidents like this are accidents and not reflective of her as a mum, although I’m sure knows anyway.

its a poo poo sandwich. if there's one consolation it's that the kid will probably kick the dads rear end some time
