Agreed. The Monday show about the Egypt-run Street News Canada was pretty interesting. Although I had to laugh when they asked the guy if any political operative had hired them to poo poo on Trudeau and spout right wing talking points, and he was like "uh no I don't think so. We just want clicks!" and they seemed satisfied with that.

Are there any decent Canadian current affairs podcasts I should check out?

Look, the whole nazi-applauding thing combined with the full-throated cheering on of genocide over the past few days has probably broken something inside of me.

Needless to say I've been doing better.

i mean, this whole country has been joyously cheering for the genocide of the disabled that we're currently doing, including the ones being genocided! and Indigenous genocide is already our federal policy.

I guess I'm saying, like people who minimize covid, that you should have seen this coming (so for some reason you shouldn't care).

The Alberta Advantage is a good socialist Canadian podcast. It's also cool because it covers western Canada which I know nothing about as a jerkoff Torontonian. A bit dry sometimes though

I think it was in this thread that I predicted Doug Ford would resign by November 15th?

Well the National Post seems to think so too.

https://nationalpost.com/opinion/denley-doug-ford-is-politically-done

quote:

Doug Ford could be done as premier of Ontario. How can he continue to govern effectively while the RCMP is conducting a criminal investigation into the way his government opened up the Greenbelt for development? Where is the moral authority to do the job?

The investigation doesn’t mean that charges will be laid, but politically, that’s almost irrelevant. Who wants a premier who is tangled up in a criminal investigation? While people don’t hold politicians in high esteem, they generally expect flaws that stop short of potential criminality.

If the Mounties proceed at their usual painstaking pace, the issue could hang over Ford for most of his remaining term, and the closer it gets to the 2026 election, the more perilous that becomes for Ford and the PC party.

Perhaps the investigation will fail to find any criminality, but that’s not going to wipe out the now-entrenched perception that select developers got a special deal. Reports by the auditor general and the integrity commissioner didn’t cast the Ford government’s actions in a very favourable light.
[...]
Ford could resign and let the party get on with the business of choosing his successor. He needs to place the interests of his party and his province ahead of his own. He might want to consider the example of Dalton McGuinty, who resigned as premier in order to give Kathleen Wynne time to cement her image and win a majority government. Of course, McGuinty only learned that lesson after seeing his government reduced to a minority, in part because of his own scandal over natural gas power plants.

If Ford can’t figure this out on his own, people need to tell him he has to go. Not Liberals or NDPers who think he’s never done anything right, but his own supporters, party workers and donors. The last time the PCs lost power, after two Mike Harris majorities, it took 15 years to get it back. They don’t want to repeat that.

Has Ford ever expressed any personal culpability for the greenbelt affair?

The right-wing playbook in our era is to never acknowledge wrongdoing or open corruption, I'm not sure he would generate any kind of political capital whatsoever with his base by resigning (personally or on behalf of his party); that would just be showing weakness in their eyes which is soy lib behaviour

Also the only reason I might consider the possibility of Ford one day resigning is that he is an incredibly fragile coward.

I don't want to ascribe too much to the Conservative politician who wrote that piece, I just thought it was notable because it ran in the NP. When you're a Conservative premier who's lost the support of the NP editors, you don't have a lot of friends left.
