More specifically, they are very close to the Jews that stayed in Palastine after the centuries; some converted to Orthodox Christianity (there has always been Christian Palestinians), and others to Islam. If you rolled everything back to 1920, almost everyone in Palestine was closely related to each other, besides some smaller populations from other parts of the Middle East.

There was clearly been a broad divergence since then, as Jews from Western and Eastern Europe and the United States came to Palestine to settle it, and they were much farther away than the people who were already there, regardless of their religion.

This is when the settlers invented a story that they were "coming home" after 1600 years, when it was simply open colonization of the people to live there regardless of their religion. Muslims before the settlement project usually got a long with their other neighbors and it wasn't a huge issue until that point.

The US specifically has always promoted colonization because it clearly gives them more control in the region, including keeping ammo depots there and having air bases available for use.

as a fun addendum: prior to the collapse of the ottomans the largest source religious strife in the holy land was between… Catholics and various eastern and middle Eastern Orthodox churches to the point that several international treaties had to be negotiated over what church got access to various sites on what days. famously a ladder at the church of the holy sepulcher has remained in place for over three hundred years as a result of the 1757 treaty

gently caress that is horrible.

One of the central propaganda narratives for the IDF has always been that they precisely bomb Hamas fighters only, because they know exactly where they are. This was always bullshit, and if you remotely paid attention to every IDF bombing campaign over the years you'd see just how bullshit it was.

But given the astonishing intelligence failure from Israel at the beginning of this particular conflict, that "precision bombing" narrative from Israel is exposed as the lie that it is. When they bomb Gaza, they neither know nor care if each selected target has civilians. They want to bomb Palestinians, including children. This is the goal. It's genocide.

There's still people in the comments to that exact post who are claiming it could all end if Hamas just surrendered. The level of delusion and propaganda is astonishing.

something that i keep thinking about is how Amnesty International constantly criticizes Hamas/resistance for using qassam rockets that aren't accurate enough to avoid hitting civilians because they're so low-tech.

like, dudes, Amnesty International, if your critique is about the inaccuracy of the rockets, then just come out and say they need more accurate, more modern firepower. SURELY WHEN THAT HAPPENS your criticism will die down.

this isn't brokebrain logic, it's hand wringing and both-sidesing. They deliberately do not complete the thought that their complaint initializes.

the crime of using qassam rockets isn't that they potentially land on civilians. it's that they're cheap and boeing isn't making money.

Was watching one of the Gaza live streams today and one of the 'precision' bombs landed in the ocean. Unfortunately the other three in that drop hit a row of buildings.

The sheer scale of destruction and death, put into perspective

It actually gets worse. Iraq and Syria combined area is about 620,000 sq km. The Gaza Strip? 365 sq km.

This is roughly 8.5 times the volume of explosions over 0.06% the land area.
