the WNBA finals are literally going on right now, I think that would be a wonderful use of ESPN's main megaphone

i mean the argument that they shouldn’t even feature a football game right after it ended isn’t necessarily one I’d argue with, but it feels like you’d be fine with the picture posted then lol.

Also the WNBA playoffs have been the most boring and sad outcome. The Chicago Sky were our last hope

I still don't get what happened to payton from 2021 to 2023. 2021 was maybe one of the best coaching jobs he ever did as he seemed to will the saints to 9-8 despite the team being 3rd and 4th stringers at every position. Now he can't even get russ to feel comfortable throwing the ball.

(Note: gently caress Payton for Bounty Gate and being a general prick, I'm glad he's floundering, this is just a devil's advocate attempt at an answer.)

Down in NOLA everything was aligned to fit Payton's vision, yeah? So even though Brees retired and dudes like Michael Thomas were declining, the institutional framework was there which allowed Payton to surpass expectations. Taysom Hill's contract was a punchline, but he was a guy that Payton viewed as an ideal cog to put in various slots of his offensive scheme. And every player who went to NOLA knew that it was Payton's kingdom.

This year he gets hired/traded for, he arrives in Denver, and presumably there's a ton of poo poo that doesn't match his preferences. From big things like the hierarchy of the coaches/GMs/President/Owner, to small things like the layout of an office being juuust a bit off. Like, there were articles about Russ getting an office last year and his personal trainers gaining access to the facilities, and all of that was revoked by Payton. I can only imagine how annoyed he was that there was so much nonsense to sort out and clutter to jettison. And we're not even talking about rosters, schemes, or on-field results yet haha.

So he's in a new state, new city, new organization, where expectations are quite high but he's earned zero leeway via past success cause he hasn't win poo poo in Denver. The institutional framework he'd been extremely comfortable in back in NOLA for 15 years is (presumably) impossible to install in a single off-season.

And then you get to the roster Paton assembled, both in terms of players and contracts. Russ is the obvious anchor, but there was also Randy Gregory (now released), and the relatively low success on recent draft picks. That's going to take time to churn through no matter how brilliant a coach you are.

Basically, I don't think Payton "lost" a personal characteristic related to coaching savvy since 2021. I would posit that he's an old guy who hasn't had to worry about the organizational structure since the mid '00s and he's quickly discovering that you can't just copy/paste a working gameplan from one team to another.

I do wonder what would occur in an alternate reality where Payton returned to NOLA and the rosters of the Saints and Broncos were magically swapped. Would there be an appreciable difference in his ability to make immediate improvements to the roster and scheme?

Regardless, lmao, I hope Payton suffers more ignominious defeats this season but also wins just enough to miss out on the hyped draftees.

I think the initial comment on the article photo was just a quip, not an earnest meltdown. Unless you're referring to reactions outside of TFF?

And I don't get how you're viewing this as media catering to the female demographic. They're merely latching onto one of the few people / products that is legitimately more popular & lucrative than the NFL.

IMO sports media catering to the untapped female demographic would entail reporting on women earning roles in the front office, coaching staff, and other organizations roles, or perhaps more accurately, the lack thereof.

That being said, if you enjoy the Swift attention during games and in coverage, then that's awesome! No two people enjoy any piece of entertainment in the exact same way. It shouldn't matter if some other poster goes "lol primetime football game so unremarkable that media uses picture of a girlfriend & sister cheering to lure eyeballs".

ESPN may mention Drake, but Taylor hugging Brittany Mahomes as an momentous event was very deliberately given front page full bill instead of, you know, the actual game. I don't remember ESPN ever boosting Drake to front page number one story status. this was a bid for some cheap traffic because they know Taylor does numbers

the other thing is that Drake a legitimate Raptors fan and I I'm pretty sure Taylor + Travis are a very contrived PR "couple" (I am taking a page from my celebrity-gossip-knowing wife who insists every celebrity couple is fake). so ESPN making a big deal about it is even more annoying to me because the whole thing seems like a marketing gimmick that they're lapping up or maybe even involved in

alright I'm done, if Taylor and Travis get married I'll recant everything
