Only now with Ospreys instead of Sea Stallions and Sea Knights, so expect that to go well.

Ardennes brought this up before, but traditionally the IAF has focussed on "surging" air operations instead of "sustaining" them, and iirc a bunch of their maintainers and ordnancemen are reservists too. I wonder if we'll begin to see some accidents:

The M117A1E2 is identical to the M117A1 with the exception that the explosive filler Minol II(377 pounds/171 kg) is used instead of Tritonal. Minol II was used in an effort to offset the shortages of TNT in the late 1960s, however, problems developed during the storage of M117 bombs filled with Minol II, especially in hot, tropical areas which caused the explosive filler to expand and ooze or extrude through the joints of the bomb. While determined safe to handle, the extruded material required maintainers to clean the bombs before transportation or usage. The U.S. Navy refused to use M117 bombs with the Minol II filler citing, "Because of the proximity of crew quarters to the ships’ magazines where explosives are stored and the necessity of handling ordnance on rolling and pitching vessels, the Navy has regarded Minol II as being a potential hazard to the safety of its ships ’ crews and thus has not approved its use aboard ship."

I'm sure it will be fine.

nah, that's the same mistake that the Ukrainian OSINT crowd makes when they infer that Russia using shells from the 70's or w/e means that they about to run out of shells (they were saying this back in April of 2022 lol). There's no reason not to use up the oldest stuff you have sitting around rather than the newer inventory.

Overworking the people is the problem as they start to make mistakes.

The plane itself doesn't get that much worse with age and use.

That makes sense, thanks.

Plus an unexploded bomb in rubble is a booby trap for rescue workers, so Israel can consider it a win-win.

See, that's what confuses me.

They were supposed to have a 28 day stockpile of munitions for an all out war, and by all account did into the 1990's. I would be very curious if that has actually been maintained into the past decade or so.

I can understand wanting to save the laser and GPS guided bombs for the war they are provoking with Iran/Syria/Hezbollah, but using Korean War era munitions that have a reputation for degrading in storage and extruding high explosives all over the place seems unnecessarily risky when the arrangement they've had with the Americans since 1973 is that Washington will give them everything they need.

It's possible that they decided they might as well use the old stuff first for pummelling an undefended area target. Maybe they figured the airmen are at their best rested now, and those bombs are just taking up storage space. The Americans used WW2 era bombs for area bombing Vietnam, and broke out the newer munitions, like the then-new M117 when striking targets that mattered. The Americans also had quite a few accidents with munitions during Vietnam, including the carrier John McCain almost burned down to the waterline.

I think there might be a hint in this article from June: The depletion of US munitions stockpile harms Israel’s QME: The depleted stockpile potentially places Israel in a vulnerable position should a conflict arise unexpectedly.

Ruh Roh posted:

The War Reserve Stockpile Ammunition-Israel, or WRSA-I, was, until recently, relatively secret. The cache of ammunition and supplies is intended to serve as a readily-accessible reserve—an insurance policy—should Israel face a shortage during a crisis, such as occurred during the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

...

Preserving Israel’s QME stands as a crucial goal within the U.S.-Israel relationship. The overarching objective is to safeguard Israel’s QME by ensuring it possesses the necessary resources to effectively tackle any future security threats. However, the transfer of the munitions stockpile to Ukraine has resulted in a diminished WRSA-I inventory for Israel.

JINSA has learned that the remaining weapons stored there are virtually useless for Israel’s needs, and since 2018 has been the only organization to call for WRSA-I to be modernized and replenished with much-needed PGMs to help counter threats from Iran and/or Hezbollah.

American officials have stated repeatedly how WRSA-I helps ensure the Jewish state’s ability to defend itself. Yet, according to JINSA, “the stockpile is falling dangerously short of meeting its stated purpose. Of particular concern is the stock of PGMs, especially Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) tail kits to convert unguided bombs. Israel will need abundant PGMs to compensate for limited defensive capabilities and prevail in an expected major war with Tehran and its proxies, all while minimizing collateral damage to civilians.

...

A depleted WRSA-I potentially places Israel in a vulnerable position should a conflict arise unexpectedly, underscoring the significance of carefully considering the implications of such actions.

For example, as a New York Times article in January noted, according to a Congressional Research Service report released in February 2022, Israel was given permission to use the stockpile in the past—once during its war with Hezbollah in the summer of 2006, and again during operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip in 2014.

(QME is the "qualitative military edge" Israel must maintain against all potential enemies in the region)
