Apparently Steve Bell has done a few comics drawing this type of ire.

The comic in question:

And a guardian article exploring it a bit here

I honestly struggle with this stuff. I'm not Jewish so have a degree of cultural blindness to things Jewish people might be more sensitive to. I'm probably too uncultured to know the inns and outs of these biblical stories and wider cultural significance...but all of this just feels like a reach? If Steve Bell really was racist why would the only proof be these subtle links? The Corbyn head on a plate on is particularly relevant - what is the actual implication here? How much additional context, conjecture and supposition needs super-imposed onto this to create an anti-semitic narrative?

The guardian article says "However, using a Jewish biblical figure who conspired against a saint was highly provocative and open to just the kind of interpretations made".

A few days ago an israeli human rights lawyer tweeted a cartoon of a boot marked 'IDF' crushing a cockroach which was a clear caricature of an Palestinian. We've seen the Israeli defence minister refer to Palestinians as animals. I know this sounds like whataboutery, but it seems as though the State expects perfect, bloodless, qualified statements from its enemies at all times, whilst hand-waving away a bit choice its its allies say.

Literally everyone who makes the meekist critique against the actions of Israel is labelled an antisemite. Steve Bell is no more antisemitic than me.

Seem like a remarkably big weakness. Are they allowed to guesstimate? Who checks the count is accurate? Is a second vampire compelled to be called in and verify the count? Does the count have to be recorded anywhere?

This is deliberate. Your broadcast the misinformation front and centre and then post the retraction in small letters long after the damage has been done.

You're specifically taught this in journalism school as part of the tabloid reporting courses.

Terry Pratchett gets into the bizarreness of traditional vampire weaknesses at length in Carpe Jugulum (a Good Book):

quote:

Two things have traditionally puzzled vampire researchers. One is: why do vampires have so much power? Vampires are so easy to kill, they point out. There are dozens of ways to dispatch them, quite apart from the stake through the heart, which also works on normal people so if you have any stakes left over you don't have to waste them.

You could make a conspiracy that Catholic stores hid the truth because 90% of sales of crucifixes, holy water, sanctified candles, prayer cards calling for the protection of archangels, etc. were being sold to people who just watched vampire movies, and nobody's going to do that if they can just buy some poppy seeds.

The more boring version would be that the movies themselves hid it because a movie where Dracula spends half of it looking for his missing sock wouldn't appeal to horror fans and Cheech and Chong already took it for the stoner movie genre.

Andrew Bridgen isn't actually a Tory any more - he was kicked out for being too much of a oval office even for them.
The BBC article makes it pretty clear that Bridgen is just getting some cheap shots in on Crispin Blunt who is one of the few Tories to be openly critical of the Government's response to Hamas's attack on Israel.

But what if I were to tell you that when Dracula 2000 was released internationally, it was called Dracula 2001?
Would that change your answer?

(Also, the film is set 5 years after the first film, so to keep it consistent, they'd have to call it Dracula 2005. Or Dracula 2006.
Plus the original writers hated having the year in the title so they wanted it ditched for the sequel. I think they didn't want people to confuse them with Dracula 3000, which was about Dracula....IN SPACE!)

Actually think this is a bit of a shame – there was an era, before a decade or so of cuts and right wing psycho management that Newsnight produced some decent reports. Once upon a time they probably would have had someone in Gaza at the minute, definitely recall them having reporters speaking to civilians in Iraq during the war. UK political coverage was usually poo poo, but it was good the BBC used to fund that sort of "deeper" late night reporting.

The amount of times you look for early coverage of the internet, computers, turn of the century technological developments, late career interviews with people like Bowie in the 90s and early 00s and it's a Newsnight clip – not really sure where anything like that would come from now.

Having to piece together the story of how people reacted to ChatGPT from silicon valley tweets and Daily Mail articles.
