this message from them is also extremely loving rich considering i tried to use paypal first and it didn't work

edit: the free shipping is currently still a thing but after this i dont trust them to not cancel the order again, or charge me twice, or some other horse poo poo, so gently caress it. the order on the site isnt listed as cancelled so who the gently caress knows.

So, I build a Daban 6601 last night. Erm, MG Astray Red Frame.

* The plastic is trash grade. Panel liner stains it, and it's got that soft.. "free toy" feel.
* Surface detail is.. washed out. I now understand the culture of scribing.
* Flash. LIke... if this were a toy I got at toys-r-us I'd be feeling pretty good. But it's ~not good~ in comparison to say, Eduard, Tamiya, or Bandai. Most sliding fits needed to be tweaked or filed so they'd either fit at all, or fit through the polycaps.
* Lots of bits and bobs need glue. Things that would be a reliable slip/snap fit on bandai just.. aren't.

My first run at this kit ended in three levels of disaster. I went into this one with the attitude that it was going to be like one of my brandless 144th scale airplane kits, and that served me well. There's a REALLY GOOD model in there. But you need to scribe, paint, panel line, and top coat to get there. Even a "snap build" requires what would be a moderately high effort attempt on a bandai kit.

I paid $43 shipped. It got to me in 5 days. I'm not mad. I'd probably build another. But I need to think real hard about paint.

If you have a lot of money to spend, Godhand nippers (a double-edge for cutting from the sprue tree and a single-edge for cleaning the remaining sprue on the part) and Raser file + sponge + cloth.

If you have less money to spend, I've been pretty happy with results from the USA Gundam Store branded Single Blade Nipper 2.0. I'm gonna order their glass files tomorrow to see how they stack up against the DSPIAE Siren that's been doing an okay job when wet-sanding so far.

e: I know a guy who swears by DSPIAE's nippers but can't vouch personally yet, I might just order some from their AliExpress shop and report back when they land in two months

DSPIAE makes a reliable one with the siren, with the Gunprimer Raser being a noticeable upgrade. Both are leagues nicer to work with than traditional files. The only real downside is gates in awkward spots where the glass files won't reach. You'll still need regular files/sanding sticks for those.

The nipper more or less decides how much you need to rely on the files, since the high quality ones like Godhand can cut far closer to the piece without causing stress marks you can't buff out. But you'll always have some degree of stress. It's just a question of whether you're cutting 1mm or 0.1mm away from the piece before hitting the rest with the files.

And you can side-step the issue altogether with paint. At that point it's less 'did I make a stress mark' and more 'did I leave a smooth, uniform surface behind?' But paint is the route to an empty pocket book.

I'm not looking to spend a lot of money (I have two other :homebrew: hobbies, so I have to budget my resources), I was just hoping for an inexpensive but notable upgrade from generic Amazon nippers and emery board. Somebody upthread had a list of recommendations that ranged from decent entry-level to godhands. I think it was before or during Backlogust, which makes it tricky to find.

Thanks for the help so far. I'll take a look at the recommended files to start.

How expensive are paints exactly? I thought the expensive part would just be the one-time cost of the airbrush (and space to use it or an indoor spraybooth).
Then again I see they're sold in tiny 10ml bottles so I guess that's just the hobby tax at work.

Synthbuttrange
May 6, 2007

Only a few dollars. Cheap enough for impulse purchases and to slowly drown yourself in a horrifying number of bottles once the main costs are down and you just want a nice new shade. Also dont forget the thinners, cleanup material and respirator / gloves if you dont want yourself covered in paint inside and out.

I managed to find a Zeta Ver Ka going for 25% off RRP in the Amiami store in Akihabara which was great value.

Annoyingly I only noticed after paying the sign that said that if my receipt was 5500 yen or more and I presented my passport I could have bought that tax-free. The Zeta was at 5360 yen so I could have just found some random anime/gacha game trinket and made up the price. Oh well, I still saved a lot even with tax.

Steadi MS-106 or MS-100. The MS-100 is $17, and will improve your experience. The MS-106 is $30? and is 98% as good as the Dispae 3.0. Also, I've never seen the dispae or steadi nippers break, while the godhands... do.

MS-106: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BF4JKZDK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
MS-100: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0894TVBYN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

"any glass file" will do the deed. I generally buy these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08222X79D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 $6 for four. Give away a couple.

I'd also buy this in particular: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001MTI3QQ/ref=twister_B07YMDF8ZK?_encoding=UTF8&th=1 It's a NT blade knife and blades. They have nice aluiminum ones, but the plastic handle ones are absolutely perfect for burnishing decals. The blades are sharp, and the back edges work great for scraping.

It tends to wax and wane. There is a huge initial cost for the airbrush, compressor, spray-booth/spray-booth parts and the PPE you need. After this what will cost you is individual pots and big bottles of related stuff (thinners and cleaner mainly).

I spent maybe £400 total on a good-but-not-top-tier airbrush, hobby-sized compressor and a portable spray-booth since I don't have the skill to make my own or the room for a permanent set-up. Now I spend maybe £10-20 a month or so on paint when pots run out. 10ml does not sound like a lot but 1) almost all standard paint* gets thinned so it's more like 20ml of colour sometimes more like 25ml if it needs a lot of thinner, 2) once you have some good airbrush control and aren't blasting paint into thin air you will be surprised how long a 10ml pot will last you, and 3) a lot of kits are one, maybe two primary colours and then some accents, so you'll mostly be replacing common colours like white or black, while pots of stuff like green or purple or yellow you just just for accents or mixing will last months.

*Not counting specialist stuff that comes pre-thinned but you probably won't use those much anyway.

Regarding Godhand breakage, isn't this related to trying to cut through thick plastic with just the tip of the nippers? And the 'harder' clear plastic?

Mine haven't broken yet, but I've been worried about it and use my 'cheap' nippers for initial cuts like that, so I'm mostly just looking to confirm my theory.

It always seems to happen after "a few months" so I think it's a work hardening issue. But, in truth, it doesn't matter why. ~other nippers don't do it~ and cost half as much. So... I don't do it.
