Volute!

Palmer PH8TTG, "Tiger Tail" finish with gold hardware. Made by Samick in the mid to late 80s, same guitar was sold under Samick and Epiphone branding. Both of those sell used in the $600+ range, this one was well under $200.

Two issues that really aren't issues.

Yep, mostly because who the hell knows what a Palmer is? Strangely, they are still around!

I have one of their Samick-made Strat copies as well. This one I posted when I got it, had a butchered Floyd screwed onto it that didn't work. It did originally come with the black hardware, so a $12 Guyker bridge from Amazon fixed that.

I had been trying to sell, but no takers and no one's going to pay what I want for a 35 year old Strat copy anyway, but I also don't have much into it, so I'll hold onto it for the Samick-built Strat copy collection I will inevitably have.

It arrived! It’s super light (6 lbs)/comfortable, the pickups sound fantastic (8.5k bridge, 8.2k neck.. sweet PAFs). The neck is a 60s C which I like. The frets are typically-Japanese: very low but not much wear. This might be the new everyday guitar for a while.

I love the V shape, and the headstock is easily one of the best ever designed. It's got just the right amount of googie-ness.

But man, why do the V pick guards always look like an afterthought?

(Not to rain on your parade, its a pretty sweet guitar!)

The longer I look at the cut of the pickguard the weirder it looks.

it was actually too much forethought, they changed the angle of the body after the guards had already been made

Pickguards are grossly mislabeled, especially in the case of Vs. They're mostly there to hide all the routing. I think a lot of guitars look better without guard.

Speaking of wiring: letting my kids (6 and 0) play with my hollowbody finally resulted in me having to reattach the jack. I will never replace anything on that guitar, because that poo poo is annoying.

Latest pawn shop buy

Squier Bullet Tele, seafoam/mint/surf green, string through body. Strings rusty as hell, missing the jack cup(but has the clip and nuts so it's still working), but otherwise like new. $85+tax, which is a no brainer buy.

And then today is new used bass day

Hondo Pro H-1120, made in Japan by Tokai, a rebadged Hard Puncher, which is the greatest bass name EVER.

Upgraded with a Badass Bass II bridge, and DiMarzio pickups

BUT!!! Neck plate replaced with a plain one with no serial #, and TAPE to keep the screws from tearing your shirt apart.

AND a fixed crack from the tuner screw

And it's also missing the bottom strap button. Also pretty sure the pickguard isn't original. And the action is sky high. But the neck is straight and even has some birdseye and figure. Happy for what I paid, and one more for the Hondo collection.

My best friend's punk band lost their bassist (suddenly moving to new Zealand with her girlfriend) with only three weeks to go before a very full October of gigs. The only issue is I'm not usually a bassist; I play mandolin and tenor guitar and didn't even own a bass, but when you're a bluegrass mandolin player you can play punk rock bass in your sleep. Luckily I was able to borrow an Ibanez parlor acoustic electric bass from my dad on which to arrange basslines for their material. Learned it all in two days, played the drummer's active Hamer Jazz bass for rehearsal/audition and before the night was over they were sounding better than they did with their old bassist. They had to teach her how to play the bass; they didn't even have to actively teach me the material.

I've been wanting to pick up a P bass for years anyway. Even if this cheap thing needs a fret leveling and a setup, I do all my own setup and repair anyway. It checks all my boxes; simplified control, satin neck, decent woods, yadda yadda yadda. And the aesthetic works equally for Punk, folk music and blues, all the genes I play.

Only like half the members of Deerhoof knew how to play instruments when they started performing, and they went on to be loving Deerhoof. Sometimes I think being able to access every virtuosic musician’s day to day playing time on the internet kinda psyches a lot of people out of trying to make music but then hearing stories of 20+ year successful bands and how humble their beginnings are makes me feel better

It's not much, but my first pedal was delivered this weekend, a Boss BD-2. I like the sound. I got it used from Guitar Center and it did not come with it's own power supply so I still had to put clothes on and go to the store. Is it normal for pedals to not come with a power supply?

E: Should I just give in now and buy one of those ~10 slot power blocks?

In my experience most pedals do not come with a power supply unless they are a complex digital unit that might need something different than a 9v. Awesome pedal though, thats a classic.

Sometimes they'll come with a battery. You can probably get away with Daisy chaining off one power supply for a while until you get a digital pedal or two.

Good first pedal btw

Great pedal!

Most pedals don't come with power supplies. Boss pedals never come with power supplies. Used pedals will basically never come with power supplies unless there's like only one single proprietary power supply that will work with it. Your best bet with pedals is to use a power supply. Don't bother with batteries, they can only power guitar pedals for a hilariously short period of time. The Blues Driver, along with most pedals (but not all), uses a 9v power supply. There's a power supply called the One-Spot that will work, and it's cheap.

BTW, one of the more popular ways to use pedals like this would be as a boost pedal to push your amp harder. If you want to juice up an already distorted tone, put a pedal like that (or a tube screamer, or SD-1, etc) in front of the amp and set the Drive very low, like below 8:00, then max out the Level knob. Tone usually sounds best at noon or slightly above.

I appreciate the words. I will look into that. I had been playing around with tones in the software for my Boss Katana Mk2 amp but having a pedal I can turn on and off and adjust on a whim is SOOO much more convenient for experimentation. The past week with this pedal has convinced me that I'll need to start learning about them.

Bought on a hunch, looks like someone's partcaster, with a body that looked like ash in the pictures. It is.

Neck fits poorly and needed a shim in the front to get the saddles into a useable position with acceptable action. And then there's a buzz. Kinda think I'll be looking for a better neck if I keep it. Or I may throw the neck in the trash and double my money and then some by selling the loaded body because...

Looks like a Warmoth one-piece swamp ash body goes for about $280 new. This has a Wilkinson bridge and Amazon special AlnicoV brand pickups, neither great but very much on the okay to good level.

Extremely grim and evil.
The BD-2's an extremely versatile pedal. People usually think of it for boosts and light drive sounds and it's great for that, but there's a surprising amount of gain in there if you crank it and I've actually heard someone get a nice black metal sound out of a BD-2 and a 10-band EQ.

I don't need a drum machine, especially one as limited as the RD-6, but how am I supposed to say no to transparent blue plastic?

This is something I've been learning lately myself.

BD-2 is a mainstay for a reason... not only is it a great first pedal, but also an amazing forever pedal too, in my opinion.

Squier quality control has gotten really good lately.

Frets are immaculate, intonation surprisingly good out of the box. The fret board isn't even dry.

I also got one of the $160 Sonic Mustangs. It could use a little adjustment, but it's decent for the price as well

Anyways, I went to a local store which specialises in bass guitars. I told them to line up all their P Basses because I didn't know what I was looking for. So I spent an afternoon there going from Squier all the way up to Fender Custom Shop. 400 dollar basic bitch to 4k bells and whistles.

The one I liked the most was the $750 Classic Vibe. Aside from being the most fun to play, I actually preferred its tone to the Fender Custom shop too. After a pro setup? It's pretty much the only guitar I own which I haven't considered doing any mods to. It's killer.
