"...creating a vision of the sort of society you want to have in miniature"
Playing Anonymous Code. How much do you need a walkthrough to see all the main endings?

Also the main character is probably the most immediately appealing character I’ve experienced in the series. Okabe was amazing of course but he took a long time to get there

Absolutely. Barring any yet to be written plot developments, i think Soujuurou (Mahoyo ending spoilers) would have been better off, as a person, getting his memories erased so he could get away from magical society and start learning how to live as a normal human being

So White Album 1 is on Steam now (based on PS3 all ages version)

And from what I can tell White Album 2 torrents have been taken down, so I'm taking that as a sign of what's coming (and it has an all ages version too)

Just to make sure, I can skip straight to WA2 and won't be missing anything right? Anyone read WA2 first and still find WA1 worth reading later?

(Also wasn't sure if this VN belongs in the other thread, but posted here because this one's relatively more active. Frankly it's confusing that there are two threads...)

White Album 2 is not an all ages game, but as far as I know the porn isn't the point so if you can avoid talking about that it should be fine.

As for needing to play the first, according to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5GoykMJLYk&t=3485s White Album 2 has some references to the first because the author was a fan but there's absolutely no need to play the first game at all.

Hey I appreciate the reply. I'll be playing WA2 first then since VN readers praise it quite a lot :banjo:

It's the fan translation by Todokanai btw if anyone's curious, they made their final release February this year

Kind of a long shot here, but worth a shot - I just started Zero Escape - Virtues Last Reward, and had a couple questions.

1) does the PC version still hate it if you save during a puzzle?

2) for the gold files - is the information to solve the gold file puzzle always present in the puzzle from, or is it often replay bait?

1) Maybe? I didn't have any problems and neither did this other person on Steam but the port is shaky enough that you might want to avoid doing so when you can.

2) The former. Puzzle rooms don't require outside information to solve.

No, the PC version, as far as I'm aware, is fixed.

The gold files will never require information that you cannot have at that particular moment. (I'm phrasing it that way because one particular file requires information from earlier in the game.)

I started playing this obscure VN on Switch because it was on sale for a few bucks and the title intrigued me. Apparently it's a remake of an old VN with ARG elements from 1999 (the first part gave you hints you had to decipher to find a website where you could download the second part, or something like that). The premise is that a game designer gets hired by a shady game development company to work on a game based around the prophecies of Nostradamus. Spooky conspiracy bullshit happens, and the designer eventually vanishes, leaving behind only the very game you're playing as a record of his existence.

It's a fun idea, but you can tell it's a remake of a 1990s game. Lots of clicking through speech topics repeatedly till you hit the arbitrary trigger to progress, lots of sudden and random bad ends. Translation is also a little stilted, and most egregiously, there's a noticeable amount of lag every scene transition. There was a recent patch which didn't fix the performance issues at all, but since it's still being supported I'm hoping another one comes along that alleviates it a little.

I had a goal of finishing all the ace attorney games by the end of the year but that is not going to happen.

I just finished the stupid rock star murder case in apollo justice and that is easily the worst case in the series (so far.) Holy crap did it play that stupid video way too many times.

This is somehow controversial in some circles but: Apollo Justice is pretty astoundingly bad overall. The series absolutely cratering, after the peak of Trials & Tribulations.

Yeah I think Apollo Justice is overly maligned. Personally, I think the worst Ace Attorney is Dual Destinies, by a long shot. The only case I liked in that one is the last one, and even so, it felt mediocre.

That being said, I also feel like Justice for All is overly hated as well. Case 4 of JFA is great and case 2 is good. Case 3 is meh, but so were all the 3rd cases in the original trilogy. Honestly, comparing GBA JFA to GBA AA1, I think JFA is the better game, each case in JFA is better pairwise compared to AA1. AA1 only comes ahead since gets the boost of case 5 which wasn't added until the DS port.

Every time I try going back to the Ace Attorney games, I think to myself 'it's been a while, I should start from the very beginning to refresh myself'.

Then I tend to check out at most around the circus case in the second game, forget about it for ages, decide to pick it up again, and the cycle begins anew.

Oh geeze, i didn't know he passed.
Schankler's OST brings more of a misty melancholy than the instant tears that a song like dai's Thank You for Being Born does, though i've found that kind of mood quite conducive to writing Analogue fanfic hehe

i read Misericorde: Volume 1 last night -- if you don't mind that it lives up to the latter part of its title and ends on a dreadful cliffhanger it's a lovely murder mystery. and it's got like a thousand songs in it! just thirteen nuns, though, but that's ok because each and every sister is perfect in their own way. even Angela.
[full game spoilers] i'm excited to see how the later volumes will play with metatextuality. between littleoldme showing up with a VCR, Hedwig's religious visions, and her intentional narrative manipulation there's a lot for XEECEE to work with

Slay the Princess is out. I quite enjoyed my time with the demo. It's the first chapter (and a bit of the second) but it was really impressive how many different variations happened depending on your choices. Great tension and atmosphere, but also quite witty as well. Four hours or so supposedly for one playthrough, but with so many branches and endings, quite a bit more for replayability.

Here's a Noisy Pixel review, who gave it a 10.

https://noisypixel.net/slay-the-princess-review/

It's only $16 for now, ($17.99 regularly) so seems well worth picking up.

Also for Mangus Archives fans (awesome horror drama podcast), it has Jonathan Sims as the narrator.

The Visual Novel was developed by Black Tabby Games, whose other VN, Scarlet Hollow, is also fantastic.

without having played it myself (shyeah RIGHT like i'm paying that price) what i've heard is that the game is a decent EVN about social interactions ... being sold as an ultra-premium-JP-tier thrilling death game. Insanely overpriced AND mislabeled. There also appear to have been a few major gamelogic bugs which are being patched.

It sounds like it would be a perfectly decent game in the $20 range, but the marketing push means that almost everyone who pays that price is infuriated by what they get.

Many people are expecting it will eventually pop up in deals for a tiny fraction of the cost so that the discount numbers can look amazingly big.

Finished it twce, enjoyed it a lot. It's very inventive and plays with some interesting narrative concepts.

Not going back a third time to get all the possible individual "goals", but I managed to see all of the major "story paths" at least once over these two playthroughs and that feels like it's enough. Also think I got most of the "real" endings.

Very strong game, highly recommend it, despite the uncomfortable presence of many self-aware witty quips.

I played through Slay the Princess once, and I really agree with the Noisy Pixel review that the game needs a flow chart or scene selection or something, at least in new game+, so you can more easily track down the stuff you haven't seen. I'm interested in seeing more, but probably not enough to play through again right away.

I liked it a lot! The princess is super cute! She is at her cutest when she is a ghostie 🥰

You know you could easily do a trans reading of this game between the whole locked into and rebelling against cisnormative roles (that feel inherently wrong in this case since its slay and not save~), everything revolving around the mirror, and the amount of endings that revolve around the princess possessing your body or becoming one with her.

Anyway the princess is always pretty cute when she is a nightmare 🥰
