Aeron and Embody are the most common pro moves right now I think. A good step would be seeing if there are shops (Design Within Reach etc.) around you where you can sit in them to help decide. You can also go the used route, I have an ancient used Aeron I overpaid for at a local large office reseller and it’s pretty good.

I went to a seller to sit in an embody for a few minutes and wasn’t really convinced the chair was worth the price. 6 months later I decided to just buy one and I regret not doing it much sooner.

We got secondhand Leap V1s re-upholstered way back about a year into the pandemic. They were I think $300ish delivered. They worked great, just had a couple scratches on top of the armrests that were purely cosmetic. Leap V2s are now in the $300ish range; if you can get the V1 for around $150 I'd go for that since the improvements to the V2 aren't really worth the price delta.

The Leap + a floating keyboard tray + a split ergonomic keyboard + a vertical mouse + a sit-stand desk + articulated monitor arm = you will never, ever have back or wrist issues from IT work, ever.

This is stuff that your work should expense if you're remote or provide if you're in office, and if they cheap out, just go to any orthopedist and ask for a note.

It is not a chair to consider if you want to be able to sit in the same position for more than like 15 minutes at a time, though. It works for me, but I can't really recommend it to anyone else. Unless you do work at a drafting table. It's a GOAT chair for that.

Semantically, "you" is both singular and plural, though syntactically it is always plural. It always takes a verb form that originally marked the word as plural.

Also, there is no plural when the context is an argument with an individual rather than a group. Somfin shouldn't put words in my mouth.

Even at full price the embody is worth it. No back pain, no knee pain. Can sit in the chair for 16 hours plus with zero issues. Easily the best office decision I’ve made.

The embody isn’t the most comfortable chair ever BUT it IS the most comfortable chair to sit in for a whole day straight

Neurologists are specialists in neurology and not in helping you figure out how to live with a medical condition that causes insomnia. CBT-I is specifically focused on helping you figure out a way that works, whether it's something that stops you from sleeping due to a neurological condition or anything else.

Medical specialists are so focused and skilled that they simply do not comprehend ways around it. They're very good at what they do, but it's a crapshoot on whether they know what the person with the condition can do to deal with it in the meantime. Again, give CBT-I a shot. It might help you find ways to work better with your condition rather than try to force you into a sleeping niche that you are medically unable to fit into.

The ADA puts the onus on employers to come up with reasonable accommodations, not assistance. Assistance = SSDI, which is something else entirely.

Apply for the dayshift jobs that you're interested in. Interview for them. Do not mention any medical conditions. Do not bring up off-shift work. If they make an offer that you like, say this: "That sounds great! I'm excited to proceed. I do have a disability which requires accommodations under the ADA, who should I contact to forward a note from my doctor and discuss accommodations?"

At that point if they cut off communications, it's lawyer time. If they give you the appropriate HR contact, talk with them about how you need to work non-traditional hours and what you can do to stay in touch with your manager and team in an off-shift schedule. Tons of companies work with outsourced people who are on the other side of the globe or an ocean and don't work the same hours they do, there's gotta be something NOC or otherwise IT related that works for you.

Failing that, is it possible for you to work remote jobs in other time zones? Maybe there's roles that need someone who can work off hours in Western time that works.

Hell, failing that, if you know Terraform I'm willing to pay you to answer a question for me.

Much appreciated. I don't have the money to try it yet, but as soon as I can, I'm going to look into CBT-I. And yeah, I've been applying for dayshift jobs left and right, but haven't gotten any interviews yet so right now I don't believe I've chased away any employers with my issues just yet. I'll definitely be trying your advice out if I get any interviews on things that are listed as dayshift only. As for the timezones, an 8-5 there would be an 11-8 job here, and I think that'd still require me trying to sleep during the hours of the night to make it into work each day, but any other hours would probably work in my favor. Remote jobs are the ones I apply to the most(because almost all of the open job postings I come close to qualifying for are all remote anyway) and I'll definitely keep an eye out for things out of states in PST.

I don't know Terraform, unfortunately. Though, I'd be more to happy to learn it if a job needed me to.

I think I fidget too much for a chair to actually matter to me. Other than the IKEA eggshell chair I had for the first week of Covid lockdown, that was terrible. But I replaced it with a $50 Aldi chair and I used that for two years without (noticeable) issues until it finally broke. Now I've got an IKEA office chair that was under $100 and it's... fine. I've had aerons before, and was using one in the office for a couple years pre Covid, and not sure I noticed it being any better or worse.

Make sure you install a sizable toilet hole and toilet underneath that massive poofy comfy chair.

Anyone know if you buy a "renewed" Herman Miller chair if the warranty of 12 years keeps going or is it the more likely buyer beware?

The instance itself has only been running for a few years but the installed java version is over 2 decades old and predates AWS.

I’m really curious why this particular version was chosen as we have the same software running on slightly less outdated versions.

Oh yeah, if you wanna go next level, a walking treadmill is awesome. Just get one that's wide enough for you as a person - I had a TR800 which was a bit narrow and forced me to walk at a different gait, which caused hip problems. The UnSit treadmill at the Actual Office is super duper wide but too big to be able to go into sit mode.

A TR1200 or other normal width treadmill with a 48-60" standing desk would allow moving monitors on the articulated arm back and forth as you switch between sitting and standing.

Not kidding on the walking treadmill, folks - I lost about 15 pounds on it before my hip problems, which went away after I stopped walking on the TR800 and used the wide boy at work. A calculated terrain mat did fine enough to help standing be non-monotonous. They also sell cheapo walking treadmills that are basically just a band to walk on, can't speak to those but you get what you pay for.

I won't let money get in the way of CBT-I. If you can find a CBT-I therapist that serves your state (and if none are in your actual state, look in bordering areas, some might be able to work something out), almost all of them have sliding scales.

You need some financial help to get on that sliding scale, the goon fund exists, hit them up. Hell, if you need a few more bucks than they can provide, I'll literally give you money to cover the difference if you provide receipts.

Sleep issues loving suck. I have dealt with sleep problems for over a decade. If your condition prohibits daytime sleeping and your fallback plan is "maybe life insurance will help whoever's left behind after I die from day shift work" then you need a way to cope better with it. CBT-I literally exists for that. It's not going to shove you into a sleep pattern that you can't do, it's going to help you establish yourself in what DOES work for your medical condition. It is strategy building. Think of it as skilling up for a sleep certification exam or something.

If they get the donor list or there’s any sort of PHI it can be sort of a big deal. But I once saw a chick just unplug a file server and basically go ‘didn’t have backups, gently caress it. Know how we can reinstall windows?’ for a TON of user shares that got crypto’d. It was awesome. Also a regular occurrence where the IT staff would pretend to troubleshoot the problem and eventually just give up.
