There was a low budget, seldom seen Captain America movie in like 1990 or so that already really sucked out loud but, for some reason, the thing that bugged me the most is that they put FAKE prosthetic ears on the mask instead of just, you know, cutting two holes in it. I'ts made worse by the fact that the ears are so obviously and distractingly fake

I caught The Meg 2 on TV recently, and it did not even manage to meet my near-zero expectations. For one, the whole production felt like it was moving from point to point very mechanically, like ticking off plot boxes. There wasn't any tension for most of it either, since while the good guys had the expendable characters as you'd expect, they all got killed off in the first scene with any danger in it. Even low budget slasher films know not to do that! Also for being subtitled "The Trench", it felt like the majority of the movie took place on the surface (including some very silly and nonsensical amphibious monsters). Possibly most confusing/insulting of all, they managed to make the “monster gratuitously eats random people” scenes uninteresting! Bad movie, do not watch.

I will say that the extremely cavalier treatment of deep water exploration was hilarious to see in the same year that the whole world got a very public example of what happens when someone does that.

I don't know how you go about making TWO Jurassic Shark movies that somehow both manage to suck, even from a "so bad it's good" or "god drat some of those effects and set pieces were GREAT!" standpoint and in a goofy sort of way but gently caress if they didn't pull it off. I mean, The Meg is ostensibly just JAWS with a bigger shark with some underwater lab science poo poo thrown in but, man, are these two movies ever so god damned loving stupid. Worse, they're loving boring.

This concept isn't complicated or all that hard to make compelling, visceral or even fun to watch. It's a Godzilla movie only with a shark.

The archmage of unexpected stinks.

Also those little wolf dinosaurs I guess were just fully amphibious and capable of being on land and like six miles underwater with no ridiculous adaptations like what sperm whales have to do to accomplish half of that.

Even then my favorite thing about that movie was the part where they establish that there's a massive popular tourist destination called Fun Island within easy rowing distance of their high tech deep water diving platform and no one knew it was there or had ever heard of it.

I always love it when writers give there heroes these super scummy things to do, like just all the time, like the go to move being stealing the car of someone trying to help you, and than they constantly have other characters talk up how virtuous and just they are.

It's like they writers realized they've written an rear end in a top hat as a main character and rather than either just go with that and accept that the main characters an rear end in a top hat and have the other characters react accordingly, or change the character to not be an rear end in a top hat, they just have other people talk about how good they are and hope the audience doesn't notice the main characters actually just a massive rear end in a top hat.

Opposite can also be true, when all the character just act like this one character is a massive rear end in a top hat, and it's never shown.
"man is old man Smith an rear end in a top hat, he shouted at us for like a second or two after we broke all the windows of his car and tried to burn down he's house! I sure hope he gets his some day!!!"

Marvel and Star Wars are both horrible for this. Characters do awful things, solely to drive the plot, but nobody in-universe even points out how awful they are.

Like in Asoka, where the one character gives the map to Thrawn to the bad guys so she can see Ezra again. Not only leaves her supposed friend and mentor to die, and sells out the entire galaxy, but also renders the sacrifice Ezra made meaningless. It's a really selfish thing for her to do! It makes her a giant rear end in a top hat! But nobody ever even points this out. Ezra doesn't even tell her "What the gently caress did you do that for?" She's still one of the good guys, so nothing she did was wrong.

And don't even get me started on Dr. Strange. How many times is his being a giant jerkass going to almost kill everybody?

Reminds me of Steven Universe when we find out that Pink Diamond in fact is Rose Quartz; she started a war and faked her death and millions of people died/were shards (and everyone but like three people in her army were killed/corrupted), and the only other person, her slave, who knows and was forced to help her do this, also can't tell anyone because Rose/Pink made it an unbreakable vow kinda deal. Oh, and she abused her "toys" back home, who were also sentient people, and abandoned at least one of them because she had a Toy Story 2 Jessie moment.

Now there is SOME fallout for about....one episode. But you'd think when the truth is revealed, the people she lied to would be furious, and her ex-slave/lover would be mad too, but nope, it's all kinda "well we still love her even if she lied to us!"

Steven has never met his mom but has to deal with all the horrible things she did, and I don't think the show ever brings up that he should hate her too, because he just can't feel or have bad thoughts about her since everyone else loved her so much.

Similar to Rhaegar Targaryean. The dude should be loving villified even by Ned Stark but nope, Ned likes him because his sister loved him and she never would have been happy with her intended, so even though she and Rhaegar died, it's okay. The dude abandoned his loving wife and two toddlers to get with a teenager, ignored a war that started because of this, and his father killing his teenage lover's family, and in the show, loving annulled his marriage to his wife, all privately and with no witnesses, instead of just, you know, as the crown prince saying he was taking a second wife and everyone else could suck it.

Steven very explicitly DOES have many negative feelings towards his mother. The entire confrontation with her in her room with the construct goes into that, and multiple other episodes go into how much he feels she messed things up that he now has to clean up. Also it's not just one episode, Garnet falls apart at the reveal and takes at least a few days to be able to come back to herself after recontextualising her relationship.

Also with Spinel I never saw it as a Jessie situation - the abandonment was an overcorrection. She lost her temper before and damaged her first Pearl, and could feel Spinel wearing on her nerves so left her at the garden to prevent herself from physically hurting her while not taking into account how it would affect her mental health.

This is a very peculiar reading of what happened.
Ruby and Sapphire split over it for multiple episodes and Amethyst was pissed but got mature over it to help Steven through, being her biggest character development in the series. Literally everyone thinks she was awful for it, and that theme is repeated in the movie and Future. It's complicated because of what she was and how she was treated by the diamonds and what she gave up to make Steven. it's in no way is it just ignored though, it's a major part of the final question of Steven's identity. The show(s) definitely talk about his resentment for the terrible things she did, but thinking Steven should hate someone is not really a good take on his character imo

It's a kid's show that goes into very mature themes because the writers know children can handle them. Apparently, many adults cannot though as it has some really stupid takes online sometimes from people willfully misreading it. One of the more common dumb takes is treating Fusion as a metaphor for sex when it's not, it's a metaphor for all kinds of relationships, some romantic (like Ruby and Sapphire), some familial.

One of my absolute favorite completely unmentioned thing in later Steven Universe has to do with your spoiler. Specifically, the part where Pink damages her first Pearl and then much much later on we see that Pearl still around serving White with her damage which you don't think of as anything special... until SU: Future where it is very casually revealed that at any point White Diamond could have sent that Pearl off to be repaired/reset (and totally erased) but didn't. I like what that says about White Diamond without actually going to the effort of saying anything.

The cool thing about the "lore" in SU is that it's sprinkled in throughout every episode in tiny bits that feel extremely natural and you don't really get any official explanations for most of it until way late in the show

There's tons of background details because the world is really well figured out but they don't lecture you about it because the show is about the characters and their relationships, the world is just the setting
