I was waiting for the bus on the street next to my apartment building while they were doing some work on the district heating pipes that run under the sidewalk on the other side of the road. An old man smoking a pipe watching the process walked up to talk to me and we chatted a bit while waiting for the bus to arrive.

The schadenfreude was on me later that day, since I forgot about a text I got a week before about district heating being cut off, because it was summer and it was completely irrelevant up until the point where I tried washing my hands a little while after 6pm and realized I had no hot water. Of course at that point I was merely in the planning stages of taking a shower while presumably everyone else in the building had figured out what no district heating water means since the heater tank was clearly emptied out by that point. At least I didn't find out while stepping into the shower.

That specific guy with the daft camera angle (Francis Bourgeois) has 3M followers on tiktok, modelling campaigns with Gucci, Paul Smith, and North Face, and went trainspotting with a Jonas Brother. He's very successful and it's all built on silly train videos.

In fairness he doesn't just do trains. He also likes scooters.

Because I like Map Men/Jay Foreman, Youtube has decided I'm a trainspotter and there's always a trainspotting vid on the homepage for me. I don't watch them, I even go through the effort of clicking "not interested" and I still get them. All because Jay did one or two vids with the dude who counts the steps in the London Underground.

Trainspotting is a British institution enough that Monty Python was making fun of it back in the 60's.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed shitposting.
This is anecdotal from a friend who does like trains, but almost certainly isn't on the spectrum (or learned enough coping mechanisms very early on that no one could tell from childhood) that some train museums have autism awareness pamphlets for kids parents whose children are a bit too much into trains.

I think it's much less common in America just because we largely have a completely poo poo rail infrastructure compared to most of Europe and Asia. Does Chicago have "El Spotters?"

edit: I can't type well

Nothing wrong with having a hobby, as long as it isn't hurting anyone. Trainspotting is fine, at least it gets you outside.

The US actually has way more rail than Europe, it's just all freight. Maybe still less trainspotting friendly since there's less in person interaction without passenger rail

I can confirm that there were some autism awareness pamphlets last time I visited the Golden Spike Tower, but they were in the little metal stands with all the tourist pamphlets about visiting the Omaha Zoo or Scott's Bluff.

Actually it is quite dangerous. They even made a public awareness documentary about it in the 90's, starring Ewan McGregor.
