to play MLS with any real sense of actual understanding of how the league rules work you need to have an MBA or something - it's hosed.

The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes, look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
It's not that bad but it probably helps to have some experience of how other American leagues work, which most FM players don't (and arguably OOTP players also don't because MLB barely has a salary cap, but there's at least a baseline understanding there) so that the game's flailing attempts to explain it to you at least have something to attach to.

It still isn't going to be an easier intro than, say, Manchester City or Al Nassr or PSG, but it helps that the AI doesn't know how to handle the special rules either (at least in previous versions, but I just bought 24 so I guess I'll see now).

I wish that I could lend you my copy of FM16 on Steam, as the older games are a bit more user friendly than the really new ones.

I agree that the FM14 LP on lparchive.org is a very good start. It's a long LP with a lot of explanation and plenty of drama. He starts down in the semi-pro leagues, which I do not recommend, but you can learn a lot from that. MLS seems like a good starting point, but it rather isn't. It's trying to take association football and adapt it to US league structure which only works in US sports because they don't have promotion and relegation.

I agree that France is not a bad starting point, just understand that you will be coming in no better than second to PSG. When you finally do overtake them, you've essentially won the game.

do not play in the MLS.

play in france, the bundesliga or the netherlands.

these leagues are pretty open besides the top spot, have super friendly registration rules and have a clear target to take down.

main thing to focus on at the start is morale and cohesion, that will win you alot of games on it's own

Pretty great youtuber and twitch streamer Zealand recommends Dynamo Zagreb in Croatia as a great team to start with and I would tend to agree. You get a ton of easy league games to figure out how to get things to work and enough money to play around in the transfer market while having european competition to challenge. Germany is also a good league to start in as there are very few strange work visa/permit issues as compared to say England.

The downside to starting with a team that's expected to walk its league is that you can get sacked pretty quickly if you scuffle along in 5th place into the winter while you're trying to figure out how everything works.

A long shot, but is there any mechanic in any of the recent FM games to force Britain, or any nation for that matter, (back) into the EU?

You can use the pregame editor for this. Groupings like the EU are just lists of countries, you could add them back in and start a new game with that modded database. You're poo poo out of luck if you're asking for an existing save, though

A custom database that does this is usually up on fmscout within days of each year's release.

I'd recommend a team in the Premier League as a first team, TBH. It is true that England is more restrictive in terms of rules than other leagues, because of the aforementioned work permit issue but personally I find that in the PL work permits barely ever stop me from signing anyone who's good enough for me to actually want to sign them. You now also get a few slots (the ESC slots) where you can bypass work permits entirely as long as you play enough English players. But financially you'll just be so much stronger than a team in any other league that it more than makes up for it.
If you want to have no restrictions in terms of squad rules, Germany and the Netherlands are also fun, as mentioned. Same with Austria.

You can definitely delegate everything that you don't want to learn yet at the start and just take control of them one by one (Or just leave them delegated forever. There's a lot of things I still basically don't touch, despite thousands of hours in FM across several editions.) I'd recommend watching this video for a quick overview. Zealand probably has a video on any topics you want to delve further on, too. https://www.guidetofm.com is good, also. Hasn't been updated since FM22, but the gist of everything is still valid.

I don't think teams lower down league structures/Lower League Management is as terrible a way to start as other people seem to think they are.

One of the big things that turns people off FM is how complex it is. If you're a team with a big budget and anything more than moderate expectations for your particular league you're straight away dealing with, alongside the pure tactics and team selection, stuff like youth teams, a big backroom, transfers in and transfers out, managing players who are more volatile and demanding than in the lower leagues, big scouting networks, etc.

I see upsides and downsides to a lot of the usual suggested starts, but the general idea of Biggish Team/Moderate European League, Moderate Team/Biggish League, or pretty much anywhere with lax squad and team registration rules is fine. The earlier suggestion of Ireland isn't bad if you want a less complicated type of team, with less things to handle, and easy registration. Add to that that you can get good enough to qualify for European competitions and you can get your cheevo from going from the lowest to highest division in a nation with one promotion and I like it (plus I'm irish.)

Dortmund is a cool first save; you're comfortably better than almost everyone in your league so can make some weird tactical choices and still be ok, and you're not expected to win the league because, you know, Bayern. Your squad is solid and you've got some great young players coming through to replace older ones who get pinched, and enough money to buy good players without being insane megaclub standard. And, as others have said, Germany's rules are pretty newbie-friendly.

Especially good if you're playing in FM23 so you get Bellingham for at least one year, and then an enormous cash pile to play with once you know what you're looking for in a player to replace him.

Germany is a really fun league on FM.

It’s just a very “clean” experience to get your feet under the table with. Not much rules friction, only 1 cup competition, 18 team leagues and 34 game seasons so they’re fairly simple to manage in terms of balancing a squad. It’s a high reputation league too so again, not much friction in appealing to signing players. Lots of good young talent around.

Even the second division.. there are some massive clubs in the German second tier and you can get them mixing it up at the top end of the Bundesliga within a year or two. Always really fun saves.

If you're going to play in USA, wait until someone (me? Dunno if I have the patience this year) releases a version of America that doesn't use MLS's crazy-rear end rules.

(I did an "American Premier League" mod with pro.rel, etcetera for some past versions. Not sure if I have the patience but I think I'll give it a go, just so I can coach my Revs (and not get thrown out in a coaching putsch like Arena did in RL)

I'm trying out the J-League, and it's pretty straightforward in terms of rules. 4 foreigners max in match day squad and 2 HGC players min in the match day squad (at least in J3). I don;'t think it gets much more complicated as you get up the leagues, but maybe there's something I missed.

I cannot figure out how player grades really work. I'm looking at a couple of 'last resort' teenage players who have the potential to be good players in the league above ours. Doesn't seem to make sense? I can only assume it's something to do with data analytics, because their ability scores and traits seem fine.

I've finished the season and can report that my Libero (S) can sometimes just go completely apeshit in matches.
I've had him turn up in the box from open play to slip a striker in for a finish, or run with the ball into the corner to lay it off to a full-back.

It is glorious.

Okay, new question: decided I want to try out K-League 2 as my first assignment in FM24. Does anyone know whether it simulates the irl limitations for military teams when it comes to signing players? Gimcheon Sangyu is available to select, but according to Wikipedia their player base is entirely drafted from players while they're underoing compulsory military service, after which they return to their originating clubs. Is that modelled in FM?

Pretty much.
There are still some problems: Set pieces are a little too dangerous right now, so I expect them to get nerfed a tad. Also, player interactions don't seem to have improved as much as originally advertised. There is also still some weird unresponsiveness from defenders during attacks, which I'm hoping is just a 3D engine issue, rather than a match engine thing.
Overall, though, it feels much better.
