Speakers in every single media device. Not so much the quality, but this is how it goes down:

0-9: Can't hear a thing. On a loudness scale of 1-10, its a 1.1.
10: Volume shoots up very high and loud as hell and wakes up the whole house. Loudness scale of 1-10, it's jumped to an 8.
16-30: Goes up to about a 9.
31-100: It just goes up a tiiiiiiny little bit in volume for each increment until at max.

I don't know what is wrong with the digital volume scaling on stuff that it feels like there's an unusual curve on volume changes compared to the volume levels.

The no prices thing is absolutely total bullshit. It used to be the law that prices had to be on each product, but the stores got that removed so they could save on labor. Of course, they double super pinky promised that they would clearly display the prices, but over time they’ve stopped even doing that consistently

I am old, and increasingly crotchety, but this whole "let's replace cashiers with self scanning checkouts" thing sucks.

I'm spending 300 bucks today in your store, and I have to now do all the work of scanning and bagging???? The gently caress???

I go a bit out of my way to go to a smaller grocery store that has no self checkout machines. It's great, for now....

Not a self scan issue, but a specific implementation issue.

Where i live, i can put some grocery bags (the big woven plastic ones that fit like 10kg of groceries) into the shopping trolley, scan as i go (the trolleys have a little holder for the scanner you take with you into the store), pay without touching the groceries again, walk out. Or if i only get a few things, put them in my backpack as i scan, zip up, pay, walk out.
Scanning at the register is limited to 10 products, any more you *don't* scan as you go you gotta do at the staffed register.
Sucks a bit if you're one of the 10ish percent that gets checked and you got a full bag of groceries they wanna sample check, but eh.

It works incredibly well and it's one of the handful of things that genuinely has been an improvement in supermarkets here.

Looking at cheap 3/8 socket sets (without ratchets included) to toss in a bag for roadside emergencies and Amazon only has a 1,900 piece socket set with every size imaginable including sizes that simply don’t exist and sizes from alternate universes for a huge chunk of money, or more what I’m looking for from “reputable” sellers such as BRBRHHRHBBBDDGD and ZZZIZZTZGZMOZL.

The human ear perceives loudness on a logarithmic scale:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness

That's why you see sound expressed in decibels. It's actually a logarithmic rather than liner measurement to better reflect how we hear. It's likely that the programmers don't know that and used a linear scale to delineate volume.

The grocery store by me has a self checkout area that seems to handle like 70% of the traffic, so they routinely have only 1 or 2 normal lanes open (which are always backed up). They also have a digital coupon clipping app that you need to use to get discounts on your items (mostly produce). The problem is that you can only apply the digital coupon price in the normal lane. It doesn't trigger on the self checkout kiosks, and if you ask the attendant they send you to the normal lanes. I hate it so much.

I was thinking of that when I read the description but disregarded it as too unlikely.
Seeing it written out clearly like that, though... yeah.

Analogue stuff is linear in terms of power output, but some witless designer might make a digital control that was linear in terms of decibels...

amazon is a stepping stone. the 'free' market has been responsible for umpteenth political strife, starvation, and bankruptcy throughout human history and in every location on earth. why wouldn't, and shouldn't, we have a central distribution hub. your government does. that's how it operates. then it sells everything to private retailers so they can mark it up and sell it to you.

if anything, something like amazon should be nationalized.

My partner and I started going to trivia nights with some of her coworkers. Theyre all across the county but we've been focusing on the one at a casino because they have the best prizes and the drinks are cheap.

Most other venues just give the winning team a prize like some t shirts or 1 gift card for the team to use at the venue. The casino gives prizes for first, second, and third place, and every team member gets a prize.

Initially the prizes were 1st place getting $20 in free play at the casino and tickets to whatever event was upcoming, 2nd gets $25 gift cards to casino restaurants, 3rd gets $20 in free gas at the station outside, and the team members got to pick their prizes in order of which team won. So 1st place could decide on free gas if they wanted, 3rd could end up with free play, etc.

A month ago they stopped allowing the teams to pick prizes so you were stuck with whatever you won. We won first place and were given free play credits and told they would email us the tickets. Well they figured we would try to resell and after some back and forth they said we actually just get guest list, so we can't even give them away. The show wasn't someone anyone was interested in so we were just stuck with the tickets and no one went.

We went back again last night and in the end intentionally tanked our final wager to try to get 2nd or 3rd so we could get prizes we actually wanted. We ended up in 2nd, which was fine, but it does leave you feeling a bit bitter when you know you could've won but you didn't want a useless prize
