I don't think they're scientists

You have far too high of an opinion of the applied sciences, mate. Every environmental scientist I know has like zero regard for personal safety. It's probably a selection bias, going around trying to find people who are willing to handle rabid bats, etc.

In highschool we got to play with mercury. It was liquid but didn't feel like it. It rolled around in your hands and when you put it back in the flask, your hands were completely dry.

The deck also doesn't... look like treated wood, at a glance. In fact the unpainted underside looks like it's not having a fun time being outdoors wood.

Sweden

Also Norway. We had an old unit for "about as far as you want to walk without a short break". The exact length varied with the system of measurement, but somewhere in the 9-11 km range; 5.6 to 6.8 US miles. After converting to a meter base in 1889, it was redefined as 10 km.

We don't use it on road signs (as a courtesy to foreigners, if nothing else), but it's otherwise in normal use; I grew up about 10 mil south of Oslo.

Of course, the old unit was originally divided into quarts, arrowshots, stone throws and ells, which have been lost as units. Fortunately.

They fall away and then you have to clean it all up. Different machines have different arrangements in terms of if the chips can just sit there for a while or if you're cleaning up after almost every job. Periodically you send it to be recycled.

Yep. Though generally it's sold to a metal scrapper, not recycled on site.

it's pretty much all the same process across any industry doing anything with metal too, I used to have a bucket next to the wave soldering machine where you threw all the daily skim off the wave pot, the stuff recovered when you drossed, and any floods on wave adapters/stuff you melted off boards that got flooded that you recovered. Just a big ol' bucket of metal oxide dust and SAC solder that got changed out monthly and sent to a recycler.
