World of Horror came out on consoles today and I picked it up. It looks cool and I like it but I feel like I'm missing something because it feels so on rails. Is there a benefit to investigating areas without the circle? How are different endings achieved? I can see how events resolve differently but it's hard for me to understand right now what changes the actual investigation.

I'm probably playing on too easy of a mode too. On my 2nd playthrough I did scissor lady first and then just cut a swath through the rest of the playthrough with the scissors. That brings up another question, other than changing the downside, does the old god you've selected make a difference?

It's been a while since I played but I'll answer your questions as best I can:

There are some events that only occur in certain areas and those events may give you a useful item or piece of equipment you can't get elsewhere. Also, it might only be possible to get a certain ending by exploring an optional area.

Different endings are achieved based on how you solve the mystery. To use scissor lady as an example: you can get one ending by completing the ritual properly and another for loving it up. Some mysteries even interact with each other. It's possible to solve a different mystery by burning down the school. If you choose to do that, you'll have to fight a different version of the scissor lady. An ending might give you a good piece of equipment but a worse overall conclusion or vice versa.

The old gods mostly impact the restriction you'll have to deal with but you do get special events that are unique to each old god.

Just started a playthrough of Homebody with some friends. It's intriguing, having died twice so far. I hope there's some payoff to the mysteries, though the reaction everyone had before the murders started was just amazing at how terrible an AirBnB this place was.

It is kind of linear because you have to investigate the circled locations to progress the mystery. Some mysteries will have a little post-it note saying something like "investigate X location twice" or "discard two items" to do a thorough investigation. Generally speaking (though not always), doing those will lead to "better" endings. "Better" is in quotes because sometimes doing things the right way means a difficult boss fight or unnecessary loss of sanity points. Sometimes you'll get an extra +15 XP at the end from doing this and sometimes you won't. It's dependent on the individual cases. Or in your case: loving up the ritual in the scissors case means a harder boss fight but you get the scissors at the end. And sometimes endings are entirely dependent on other factors.

Other than that, you shouldn't be investigating irrelevant locations because that will increase doom and / or increase the risk of running into bad events. You can still visit shops and stuff like that without investigating the associated location (e.g., hardware store at the seaside location).

My advice to you is to just play the game on whatever difficulty feels comfortable while trying to get different endings. Once you hit a wall, you can look up the requirements. Some are pretty complicated (do X mystery in such a manner for Y item and then use it during mystery Z) and some are... kinda underwhelming (play on timeline B which just changes some details arbitrarily).

My biggest initial disappointment with the game was that it didn't feel like I was experiencing a "real" narrative. I started enjoying things much more when I treated it like the board game it is and started doing challenges, using different characters, and seeing how weird my playthroughs could get from all the random poo poo happening.

And as Boar said, Old Gods mechanically change 1. the restrictions / penalties specific to themselves (like "can't run from combat") and 2. some random events. There's one Old God that's basically The Color Out of Space that degrades your stats for every 21% doom you get, but also has random events where it mutates your body to give you bonus stats.

How is the game on console? I was wondering what the interface would feel like.

While there’s several button shortcuts, you literally move the cursor with the stick like a mouse.

Oof. I wonder if you could do touch controls on a Nintendo Switch in handheld mode?

Well, hopefully the game will get more attention now that it's not "just" a PC indie game. I hope you enjoy it!

Adding on that before you look up exact spoilers, you can check the achievements list in-game; you can scroll through the entire block and they often (but not always) tell you exactly what you need to do, even if they might not necessarily tell you how to get the prerequisities (e.g. non-starter characters or items), and they don't tell you what you'll unlock ahead of time. Like one of them is "RESTLESS - complete a playthrough without resting". Resting in this case refers to the REST action you can take during a playthrough.

Also, while I'm not advocating purposeless random investigations, I will mention that the standard rate of Doom accruement is 1% per investigation (leaving out potential gains and losses from events/fights), and this game boils down to risk/resource management a lot of the time - going into a shop, for instance, is 4% Doom, which is the equivalent of 4 investigations. It doesn't hurt to mention that every main location has a unique event pool (though there's also a standard pool of events mixed in), and you may have cause to search an area unrelated to your mystery to fish for a specific event or even a unique enemy (for their item drop, if nothing else). But it's also true that's more for once you have a better feel for and understanding of the game, and most of the time you should focus on the required goals, because you might not have the resources to spare.

Like this game I would have failed if I had done a single visit to the Shop (would have been nice to have been able to buy a real weapon, though), had some real unluck with Doom generators early on and I had to visit the Hospital more than usual because of the background I was playing.

I should dive back into World of Horror. I loved it when it first launched in EA and really became hooked when I was noticed by (spoilers because there’s folks new to the game and some things are best experienced blind) Something Truly Evil, I’m a sucker for horrific entities that don’t so much have names as descriptions, I should see what’s been added since then.

Played through the first chapter of AW2. Honestly the performance isn't as big an issue as people were making it out to be - my computer is below recommended specs (mid-to-high-range non-gamer laptop that's about 3 years old) and I've gotten solid frames running it with low graphics, with only one major graphical glitch (characters often wade through waist-high foliage) that'll probably get patched out sooner or later. Remedy is definitely hitting their stride - there's only about 30 seconds of combat in the first 2 hours, but already they've introduced some relatively advanced mechanics (inventory management, conspiracy boards, FMV that's insanely campy). Saga is a fun protagonist and Casey is also there.

The feeling you get when you win at 99% Doom and realize if you had done literally anything differently all playthrough you'd have been screwed is quite appropriate to the genre.

I recoiled a bit when I found my first weapon upgrade currency because I was worried that Control has integrated a bit further than it should have but it seems like just a flat collection thing rather than a gear system so that's okay.

Lol as a kid playing Koudelka I thought the voice acting was terrible, like it's set in Wales and they're meant to be from different parts of the UK but they all have American accents!

Also the combat leaves alot to be desired, random battles + grid based combat where you always start outside of attack range is the most horrifying part of the game

roomtone

yeah I played Koudelka. I think my save got glitched or something after disc 1 though, and the combat was so tedious I didn't see myself playing through to get back there again so I dropped it, but it WAS pretty cool aside from that. and there's only one battle theme. i'd like to play a combatless version very much, though.

that's why something like silent hill is still so playable - yeah, the combat isn't great, but you can ignore most of the time and when you have to deal with it, it is at least brief. there isn't enough game to get in the way of the game.

After playing a few visual novels I picked up a couple on steam, specifically Cooking Companions and The Coffin of Andy and Leyley. The former was good, and I liked the second one, but man I'm surprised how hard the latter game is getting smacked as a "incest porn game" by people who presumably haven't seen anything but a couple of nightmare sequence screenshots?

The game had a lot of gags and dick jokes in it, but idk maybe if it was a brother emotionally and legally trapping his sister in a incestuous relationship that she can't escape from after making her an accomplice in a murder at a young age, blackmailing her with that fact to drive everyone else away including their parents, and giving extremely strong vibes that he is going to try and rape her at some point rather than the sister doing all that to her brother then it would be treated differently. Like I don't know the situation surrounding the game outside of what is actually present on screen but calling that JO material is kind of telling on yourself.
