You can do a short term import to the US for 90 days, I see a few overlanders a year from Europe having done this. A modern 70 Series Landcruiser is a rare sight here other than that.

Any tint on the windows at or in front of the driver seat is illegal here, so.. my own doing, but it was still dumb, and not even that dark!

I don't understand the front steering linkage...doesn't it need another attatchment to the frame to not go all wacky when turning at speed? Or does that not matter for a solid axle? I don't know poo poo about poo poo, this is a genuine question.

It's not actually a solid front axle, which is part of why the steering linkage looks/is so janky even from the factory. It's "Twin Traction Beam" or "Twin I Beam" and is well loved for being very durable while allowing a shitload of mostly-independent suspension travel, which makes it popular with people trying to go fast in the desert.

The steering geometry of TTB can be charitably described as "dogshit". That huge suspension travel also comes with huge changes in toe and bump steer.

Wacky when turning at speed is a feature of TTB/TIB, not a bug.

also, i went and looked, and the 2wd 2024 Super Duty and it is indeed still twin I-beam.

Nice set-up though. Looks like a good amount of travel.

Thanks. Haven't gotten a chance to really test it but so far it's night and day from the old janky 20 year old 4wheelparts procomp lift kit that was on it before.

Main upgrades were a Desolate Motorsports stage 2 kit: https://desolatemotorsports.com/shop/suspension/packs/4-inch-lifts/stage-2-mid-travel-daily-combo-duplicate-2/
which should give 11" travel in front and 14" in rear. Replaced U-joints and did brake job while everything was apart as well. The old flowmaster(?) exhaust that was on there didn't work with the new suspension, hence the hack job that just dumps straight down.

Gotta drive it around for a while and let things settle then bring things back; it's got a funky positive camber when stopped up front at the moment.

New tires might be in order soon, we'd like to feel comfortable driving it over the winter and would be way more okay with KO2s for that than the KM3s on there now. Which then comes with the decision to stick with 33s or size up to 35s.

As does the E350/450 cutaway. Going on ohhhh what, 60 years now

TTB/TIB can't be beat in the dez. And if so, it's by six figures of aftermarket custom parts. No taco or whatever need apply.

To be clear, didn't do the work myself, so we don't get any credit for the work aside from choosing the shop, sticking with TTB, and throwing money at them. Good to know that their work looks good to others more knowledgeable than myself; they've got a good reputation and seem like they know what they're doing, and good people. As a sidenote, they had nothing but great things to say about working with Desolate Motorsports on it.

It's my wife's, actually her first car (at 16), and she's got no interest in rock crawling but would love to explore the desert (we're right on the CA/NV border), so sticking with TTB was a no brainer and the shop was stoked to work on it as a nice change from their normal work (mostly vans along with a smattering of tacos and jeeps).

It just happened to be an E91!

A 2007 320D, also with lots of equipment, bought it in 2013. It feels really sad letting it go, but we needed something more modern, reliable and comfy. We didn't want to finance and didn't want pure electric, so I spent three weeks going manually through 400 listings to find the exact specs I wanted. It came down to the F31 and an F11 530XD, and the 530 had defective comfort access and no DAB radio, so this one won.

I've only done the 8hr transport stint when picking it up and a quick 15 mile drive today, but I'll try to sum up.

The seats are an upgrade. Not by much, but I did not have lumbar support in the E91, that was a game changer in the new car!

The steering is completely different, it feels very over-assisted, light and disconnected from the road and wheels in the new car, and it's hard to find the correct amount of force to put into turning the steering wheel.

The newer M-sport suspension is infinitely better and more useful over speed bumps and bigger road undulations, but it does pick up smaller details and bumps in the road that the old car didn't, that frankly are completely unneccessary to the driving experience.

The dashboard and door card materials in the newer car feel and look cheaper, probably for environment and recycling reasons. When I adjust the steering column all the way up, it covers the mileage counter at the bottom of the dials, which is just poor design.

The adaptive cruise is amazing, I will never live without again. I could just sit in the car all day yesterday and listen to the radio and podcasts, and the car itself kept a good distance to the car in front.

The engine in the E91 still feels like a four cylinder turbodiesel engine that does revs, and you can tell it has an automatic transmission. The driveline in the F31 feels a lot more "alien" and disconnected from a classic driving experience.

All in all it's objectively tons better, it still has BMW 3 series DNA, but you lose a lot of the old identity and driving experience that made people love BMW back in the days.

Good write up! Thanks!

130K Miles on my N52 328, so the 6MT & I6 and not needing to take out a loan were big factors in my decision, but AAC and a HUD sure would be cool. And I wish I was more patient and found one with the heated steering wheel but oh well :)

The electric steering should tighten up and get heavier if you put it into Sport mode. Also, the throttle stops being lazy. The difference is if you have variable steering, that only gets heavier at speed, it's light for easy turning at low speeds. I'm still not sure how I can swap between one car with variable and one without easily, it used to weird me out going to a car with fixed ratio steering.

I still miss the linear power of the N52, but boost is so good. There's that extra special oomph the first few days it's 50* in the morning.

man, that sounds like a downgrade in pretty much every way. isnt the e9x the pinnacle of modern bmw?

the only one ive experienced was a 330d, and it seemed like a pretty good time for a modern car. surprised me that a diesel actually had some care put into making it halfway fun. are the more recent ones really an upgrade from that?

I enjoyed my F31 330d more than my E91 330d. It felt a lot less sloppy, more comfortable too. The downside was the move to electric steering.

That said, even though the F31 looked excellent in black with black trim, it's the E91s that make me thinking about getting another.

I'll call the F31 a big upgrade in everything that is "modern car" values compared to the E91, and a slight downgrade in everything that is the good old grumpy originalpolizei big straight-six manual transmission BMW values, with the electric steering being the biggest difference. I've also owned an E34 530i V8 manual touring and a manual E36 323i, so I've had my fill of old-school raw BMW experience and I'll be happy with the F31 😁

Depends on the whims of the manufacturer too, both UK and JDM SW20 had indicators on the right. Which always used to mess me up when Id get into my other cars. GT86 has it on the left though although that’s more subaru I guess.

Did a bit of jumping back and forth between the F31 and E91 today as I was preparing it for sale, and the E91 feels like a small toy car compared to the F31, but it's a dense compact toy car made of cast iron and hardwood! The F31 is just a big fluffy cloud in comparison.
