I also just think that, as weird as it sounds, the US is a way better partner in africa than France. Not to say it's benevolent or even particularly good, just that the French have set the bar ultralow (and have been wearing out their welcome for an extra ~50+ years). Better to divide and conquer your colonial overlords than try to do it all at once, presumably.
