They're goofy and safe comic book melodramas, and while I treasure that kind of nonsense and swallow it all like the gormless hog American that I am, they're not exactly much more than "entertaining, if you like this sort of thing." Contrast with, for instance, The Boys, a comic book superhero story which actually has difficult and compelling things to talk about, and which it does more artfully and more affectingly than nearly anything Marvel has ever done.

When in doubt, err on the side of Awesome!

Wandavision has the Nightmare Before Christmas problem where they had to being in another, more evil character to distract the audience from the fact that Wanda is the bad guy. If Agatha hadn't shown up to drain Wanda of her witch juice that town would still be trapped in sitcom hell.

That still could have worked if they had examined it for two seconds, but no, had to have a sympathetic character absolve her with a line.

I liked Wandavsion except for the ending.

I still enjoy most of the Marvel stuff (except for the travesty that was Secret Invasion) and I'm actually excited to see one version of The Marvels (the fun/comedy first trailer version). But I'm worried that Secret Invasion will rub off on it and it will also be more like the second trailer.

I can't really speak to the general public's thinking on the issue, because I know I'm a freak, but I'm not sure I buy the "People aren't interested because they expect you to watch a gorillion million things before seeing it" logic. First of all, that makes it sound like you'd be completely lost otherwise, and most of the time they do at least a little "Here are our established characters/dynamics/concepts" dance. Marvel movies aren't exactly the LOTR trilogy.

And while I'm sure the "clean your plate" mentality is a thing for certain people, I know for drat sure it's not the dominant case with videogames (sup Witcher 3), plus I don't think most people peeking in on long running stuff like Dr. Who or Star Trek or Star Wars or Law and Order or Batman or Godzilla feel compelled to 100% the rest of the franchise.

Hell how would people ever start watching sports if that was some kind of iron clad law?

I don't think it's Marvel specific burnout, though I do think that a lot of their recent output not being as good as people expect plays a part. I think it's that there are so many streaming services and movies and shows that it's fatigue for almost everything.

Like it's hard to get people to go back to theaters now, so you almost have to make the movie an event.

They're not. The movies would not have gotten as big if you truly needed to watch them all to get it all. All the relevant stuff will be contained within the movie to get everyone up to speed, like they've always done!

I agree that it's not really reflective of how audiences at large think but I think people would say stuff like that less often if they at least felt the individual installments stood up well on their own. Which is questionable, both due to quality and how often plots just don't get resolved because they're setting up for future tie ins.

I do think the perception that "You need to have seen all the movies and shows" might be a deterrent for some, even if not most. That's something positive word of mouth and good marketing can overcome, but Marvel has been lacking in both of late.

I think one of the big differences is that back then they were just a handful of movies, yeah you didn't need to see every movie before watching The Avengers Part 1: The Avenging (and indeed based on box office returns the vast majority of the audience did not), but even movies you didn't see you could catch rerunning endlessly on TV, rent from Netflix, see on Netflix streaming, or maybe watch at a friend's house, etc. That sort of easily accessibility helped keep Marvel in the zeitgeist and kept the knowledge of who these characters were and what was going on widely dispersed. For example, when Taika Watiti's Thor: Ragnarok was coming out, I was able to easily catch up on the reruns of the first couple Thor movies in a marathon on TV. When James Gunn's GOTG 2 was coming out, the friends I shared my Netflix account were able to easily watch the first one.

But now? All the movies are stuck on Disney+ and never appear on other services anymore, especially Netflix, which is the closest thing to endless cable TV reruns these days. And speaking of cable TV, they never show any of the movies newer than Endgame, plus cable TV is not what it was 10-15 years ago anyway. There are more movies than ever, and also the TV shows, which don't get anywhere near the promotion a theatrical movie gets, don't show up anywhere but Disney+, and are 4-8 hours long, which means they take a lot longer to watch than movies. So all that adds up to a mountain of content that the audience might feel they missed out on, and it's less dispersed and more siloed than ever, ultimately reducing the potential audience that wants to see new movies in the theater.

Here's my pitch for Blade

Opens literally a recreation of the opening of 90s Blade. A woman takes a dude to a rave, but its a vampire Rave, Blade shows up and fucks poo poo up, but in this he's looking for a specific vampire. He finds them, but while he's going "where is the mcguffin!??" another Vamp comes up behind him, and before Blade can react, BOOM not more Vamp as Elsa Bloodstone is there going "I see we were looking for the same thing" and they team up. They're after Baron Blood, and he's out there somewhere, and he's looking for something that clearly would be bad for humans. Eventually they find out Blood is looking for something that Hydra brought to NYC at some point, but where the Hydra warehouse is has been lost, but Blood is hunting it down. Eventually they find the Hydra stuff, and they discover, its Omega Red! Blood gets there and releases Omega Red and Blade and Elsa fight them, they take out Blood but Omega Red gets away. They realize that there's something more going on, and they decide they need to get some help, and here comes the Midnight Suns! Post credits shows Blood's hench vampire meeting someone and telling them of their failure and its Dracula!

I'd have a hard floor remix of a newer New Order song. Like the vampire driving the guy to the blood rave at the start would be another porn star turned mainstream actor.

The MCU is in DIRE straits at the moment.

I've always thought that their big "in case of emergency, break glass" movie would be Avengers Vs. X-Men but I don't know if they'll make it to that. Feige screwed the pooch on Phase 4 and 5 it seems.
