I only had to assign one manual kill this time, but it was pretty much a no-brainer – Alexander clearly took out the Hunchback’s Gyro with an SRM barrage. There were some great melee kills this mission – I dread to think what will happen when pilots start getting hold of melee-specific SPAs. Jeanne withdrew before she could be destroyed, so she doesn’t appear on the list.

I really thought I did more damage and/or kills.

Mind, I guess I just tagged everyone while trying to figure out who to kill.

The cockpit broke earlier in the maintenance cycle, and the repair check alert was overwritten by a more recent report (the leg job - another thing our genius techs broke). Although given our techs' track record I wouldn't be shocked if whatever they did to fix the leg somehow wound up breaking the cockpit at the same time.

The winner for this vote is B: Field Refit, which means we get to use the Mek Lab for the first time!

The Mek Lab in MekHQ is like the standard MekLab software, except you’re limited to components you actually own. As instructed, I remove a single heat sink and add some additional torso armour. The result is a Class A refit, an extremely simple refit that does not need any specialist skills or tools. In fact, it’s so simple that Sam Kost manages to do it all in just over five hours.

Here it is – the Trebuchet TBT-5Sr (for refit!). With luck this version will have a bit more staying power.

Boot Camp – Intermission I

June 6th, 3016 – Panzyr II, Zherdevskiy Palace

“Oh. It’s you.” Etienne Decimis muttered sourly as he opened the door and saw Jenna standing there. He glowered at her, his eyes burning with anger and resentment. “Come to rub my nose in it, have you?”

Jenna forced herself to smile, doing her best to hide how drained she felt. House Decimis’ palace bore little resemblance to the one she had grown up in back on Lothair. As a former fortress, Zherdevskiy Palace was a labyrinth of corridors and narrow staircases designed to confuse and disorient a potential attacker. Etienne’s quarters were located at the top of the palace’s easternmost tower, and getting there required climbing six different staircases. Normally she could have skipped most of them by taking an elevator, but it just so happened to be undergoing maintenance, forcing her to make the entire journey on foot. Jenna kept herself in good shape, but climbing up so many flights had left her feeling exhausted.

“I think we did enough of that yesterday. No, today I just want to chat. We can do that, can’t we? You’re man enough to admit you screwed up and could use some advice, right?”

Etienne’s jaw tightened. The muscles in his arm tensed, and Jenna moved her foot into the doorway in case he tried to slam the door in her face. The boy glared at her for several long seconds, then exhaled sharply and stepped aside to let her in. “Fine. But I don’t want any triumphalism, you hear me?”

Jenna nodded politely and stepped inside. “Of course, your lordship.”

Despite being the crown prince, Etienne’s quarters were sparsely furnished. There was a small sitting area with a couple of couches, a reading corner with a few bookcases, and an electric heater mocked up to look like an open fireplace. There was a holotank, but it was clearly an older model. The walls were mostly bare aside from a few paintings by an artist Jenna wasn’t familiar with. A small workstation laden with computer equipment stood in one of the corners, but as with the holotank, all of it looked dated. The sight came as a minor shock to Jenna, who had expected something similar to her own room back on Lothair. Her father’s palace had been relatively modest, but House Decimis’s holdings made it seem opulent by comparison. She supposed it simply spoke about the difference in prosperity between even a minor Great House family and a prominent Periphery noble.

Etienne closed the door and immediately sprawled on the nearest couch. He fixed a moody gaze on Jenna, but while resentment still burned behind his eyes, he also wore a contemplative frown. “You lied to me yesterday, didn’t you? About being a new company. You’re all veterans. That’s why you beat us so easily.”

“Not quite,” Jenna said, smiling as she sat down on the couch opposite. “We really were founded just over a year ago, but that doesn’t mean we’re all newbies. Before that most of us were either mechwarrior-errants, professional mercs or former House soldiers. Collectively we have a lot of experience, which is why your grandfather asked us to train you. It also ties nicely into the first lesson you’ll have to learn if you want to be a more effective commander.”

Etienne arched a brow. “Which is…?”

“Never take your enemy lightly. No matter how weak or incompetent they appear to be, always assume that they have a plan and know what they are doing. Those warm bodies on your thermals might just be a rag-tag bunch of half-trained urban guerillas… but they could also be an elite DEST death squad. It doesn’t matter whether you are fighting pirates or an elite House unit. No commander ever lost a battle by taking their foe too seriously.”

“It didn’t seem like you were taking me seriously.”

Jenna shook her head firmly. “Oh, we were. Our denigrations were a tactic, your lordship. We were trying to bait you into making mistakes. You should have listened to your lancemate and jammed our comms. That’s another lesson, by the way – always keep your cool. Losing your composure makes it easier for your enemy to dictate the flow of battle.”

“Whatever. It was just a simulation. I wouldn’t let it get to me in a real fight.” Etienne scoffed quietly. He scooped a handful of nuts from a bowl on a nearby side table and began munching through them noisily, clearly trying to seem unconcerned.

Jenna leaned forwards and fixed Etienne with the most serious gaze she could muster. “I hope so. I really do. Because if yesterday had been a real fight, your whole unit would have been wiped out. You and your lancemates would be dead or captured, and whatever planet or city you were protecting would have been conquered or sacked. War is a zero-sum game, your lordship, so you have to play to win, no matter what.”

Etienne stopped mid-chew, realisation dawning on his dusky features. He still looked sullen, but it was obvious that the stark reality of Jenna’s words was beginning to hit home. That was good, because it meant that she had been correct in her judgement. As Jenna had hoped, the boy was stubborn, but he could be reasoned with. She let the silence hang for a moment to make sure the lesson had fully sunk in before continuing.

“So that’s two pieces of advice – take your enemy seriously, and keep a cool head on your shoulders. Can you guess what the third one is?”

“I’m not in the mood for guessing games, merc. Get to the point.”

“It’s leadership.”

Etienne snorted derisively. “Oh, come on. You can’t say I didn’t lead from the front.”

Jenna nodded, not wanting to bruise the boy’s ego too much now that he was beginning to listen to her. “You did, and you proved to be a capable duellist. The Griffin is a good machine and you piloted it skilfully. But leadership is more than simply charging into battle and expecting your men to keep up. You need to give your subordinates clear instructions, preferably via a coherent chain of command. Always keep one eye on the wider battlefield and be ready to switch tactics in response to changing conditions. If an enemy mech is in a vulnerable position, tell your men to focus their fire on it. If an ally is in trouble, move to support them or order them to withdraw. Be aware of your lancemates’ strengths and weaknesses and direct them accordingly. A coordinated force working together is far deadlier than a collection of individuals all doing their own thing.”

“That… makes sense,” Etienne admitted grudgingly, “but it all sounds so complicated. How can I possibly keep track of so many things at once?”

“I’m afraid this is reality, your lordship,” Jenna explained patiently. “Real battles aren’t as simple as the holos make them out to be. Learning how to command a force takes practice, like any other skill. That’s why we’re here – to help you learn.”

Etienne nodded and settled back on his couch. He seemed content to let Jenna continue, so she did, expanding on the tactical and strategic aspects of being a commander. She wound up talking for nearly two hours, which was far longer than she had expected. Etienne remained mostly silent, although he did ask several questions about defensive engagements and urban combat. It was clear that he was beginning to think about what might happen if Panzyr II really was threatened, which was good because it meant he was starting to take things a bit more seriously.

Not wanting to overload the boy’s brain with information, Jenna brought the lecture to a close and stood to leave. “My compatriot Mike Clements will be handling your training programme for the next three months. He would like to talk you through it sometime tomorrow. Would ten o’clock acceptable?”

Etienne sighed. “I suppose it’ll have to be.” He stood up and walked over to one of the porthole-like windows set into the far wall. Next to it stood what looked like a tall stand whose contents were concealed by a length of canvas. “Show yourself out. I have things to do.”

Jenna felt a mild stab of curiosity, but quickly suppressed it. What Etienne did in his spare time was none of her concern. She left, closing the door behind her and stepping back into the labyrinthine depths of the palace. As her footsteps echoed off the walls and floor, an old Terran proverb floated up from the depths of her consciousness. Etienne was a stubborn and prideful horse, but she had managed to lead him to the water. Time would tell whether he would drink from it or not.

Etienne’s leadership skills improve slightly – Fusilier mechs will coordinate more effectively.

June 20th, 3016 – Panzyr II, Zherdevskiy Firing Range

A thunderclap echoed across the firing range as the Hunchback’s massive autocannon discharged. A gout of smoke vented from the barrel, and the concussive echo shook chunks of snow from the surrounding trees and rattled the roofs and windows of nearby buildings. After confirming a hit, the mech pivoted towards the next target and fired again, triggering another miniature earthquake.

Seated in the range’s reinforced viewing bunker, Alexander watched with interest as Cosette Delacroix put round after round into the many targets downrange. The firing range was located in an old glacial valley a couple of miles outside Zherdevskiy City. The local geography made it an ideal site: the flat basin provided a stable firing platform, while the steep walls could absorb any shots that happened to go wide. Originally it had been a vehicle and infantry range only, but Lord Decimis had funded the creation of additional hangars and other facilities capable of accommodating battlemechs.

A loud thump echoed through the valley as Cosette put a round into a wooden mock-up of a Phoenix Hawk. The shell was a dummy round without the usual explosive payload, but the sheer momentum behind it was enough to smash the Phoenix Hawk’s upper body into a blizzard of splinters. Having finished all of her stationary targets, Cosette walked her Hunchback over to the mobile range, where a series of cheap civilian trucks mocked up to resemble tanks and other combat vehicles were being driven back and forth via remote control.

The end result proved beyond all doubt that Cosette did not need any marksmanship lessons. The final tally for the stationary targets was seven destroyed, two damaged, and one miss. She’d had more trouble with the mobile targets, but still managed a respectable five destroyed, three damaged, and two misses. After firing her final shot Cosette marched her Hunchback over to the range’s hangar, dismounted and made her way over to the bunker on foot. Once inside, she immediately made a beeline for the coffee machine.

“So? What do you think?” she asked, rubbing her hands together as the machine coughed and gurgled.

Alexander shrugged and smiled amiably. “Well, you can shoot straight. That’s more than can be said for most of your lancemates.”

Cosette grinned. She was a pretty young woman, with shoulder-length black hair and sapphire-blue eyes full of laughter and cleverness. Her cheeks were pink and pinched from the cold, but her colour was quickly returning now that she was inside.

“You have my old teacher in the Royal Guard to thank for that,” she chirped, taking a swig of coffee. “Old Mastiff was a hard-rear end, but he was also one hell of an instructor.”

“Your records don’t mention a stint in the Royal Guards.”

“That’s because I never made it in. Etienne was parachuted in halfway through training. I was assigned to babysit him, and, well... that turned out to be a full-time job. Before I know it I’m freezing my rear end off here, dashing this way and that in a futile effort to keep the little bastard out of trouble.”

A wry smile crept across Alexander’s lips. Being a royal bodyguard himself, he could well imagine the kind of mishaps Etienne had dragged Cosette into. Although… thinking about it now, it wasn’t exactly a fair comparison. Jenna was charming, beautiful, and usually had good sense, while Etienne was an obnoxious little toad with a room temperature IQ.

“That can’t have been fun at all.”

Cosette swirled her coffee. “Nah, I don’t mind really. It’s a good job, y’know? Pays better than the Guard would have, and my folks were thrilled to hear I’m hobnobbing with royalty now. Just gotta keep him alive.” Her expression turned more serious. “Speaking of which, mind telling me how I hosed up in the sim? How the hell did you manage to sneak up on me like that?”

Alexander took a moment to collect his thoughts. He wasn’t used to giving advice, but he felt he could draw on his experience both as a bodyguard and a mechwarrior to at least try to explain where Cosette had gone wrong. “This might sound paradoxical, but… you stayed a bit too close to Etienne. Once I figured out you were glued to him it made you easy to predict. You were so busy trying to cover his rear that you wound up leaving yourself dangerously exposed.”

“So, you’re saying I got tunnel vision?”

“Yeah, but that’s only half the problem.” Alexander frowned. The next part wasn’t really Cosette’s fault, but he had to bring it up. “The other half is your mech. Don’t get me wrong – it’s a solid machine and really put the fear of God into me a couple of times. Trouble is, it’s just too slow for close protection. Etienne’s Griffin is much faster, and you were obviously struggling to keep up with him. If you’re going to take a bullet for someone, your mech needs to be at least as manoeuvrable as theirs. Ideally it should be more manoeuvrable – that way you can quickly catch up if they run into trouble.”

Cosette finished her coffee and stared out of the window towards the mech hangar, her expression downcast. “Not much I can do about that. Old Kneecapper is all I’ve got.”

Alexander nodded sympathetically. “Yeah, I gotcha.” He chewed his lower lip, trying to think of something more encouraging to say. “Y’know… being a bodyguard doesn’t mean you can’t act on your own initiative. Instead of constantly playing keep-up, why not go headhunting? Figure out which enemy is the biggest threat, then focus on taking them out. Your mech is better suited to it, and you’ll still be protecting Etienne, just in a more pro-active way.”

Cosette thought for a few moments, then shrugged. “Guess it’s worth a try. Don’t complain if I core you out next match though!”

Alexander grinned. “If you do, it means I did my job right.”

quote:

Cosette will act more independently from now on.

August 7th, 3016 – Panzyr II, Zherdevskiy City

Mike’s fingers drummed against his desk as he studied the Fusiliers’ latest performance reviews. Over the past two months he had worked tirelessly to train the rookies up into something resembling a coherent fighting force. After countless trips to the firing range, one-on-one engagements in the simulator, theoretical tactical exercises and teamwork-building activities, Mike now had to decide whether the Fusiliers were ready to move on to more advanced training.

On the surface, the results were encouraging. Driven by the unassailable logic that a mechwarrior who couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn would inevitably lose to one who could, Mike had focused most of his efforts on improving the Fusiliers’ gunnery skills. Their genuine improvement in recent weeks was a strong argument in favour of increasing the tempo.

quote:

Jean-Paul Camus takes remedial gunnery lessons. Gunnery skill increases from 5 to 4!
Ricardo Hess takes remedial gunnery lessons. Gunnery skill increases from 5 to 4!
Armando Pasquier takes remedial gunnery lessons. Gunnery skill increases from 5 to 4!
Jeanne Turgot undergoes special MVP training! Gunnery skill increases from 5 to 4! Gains ‘Evasive Action’ SPA!

“gently caress it. They’re ready. Let’s do it.” Mike said to himself. He slid the papers into his filing cabinet, then pulled out a paper folder entitled ‘Operation Snow Scar’.

‘Operation Snow Scar’ was the name Mike had given to the next full simulated engagement he had planned. The scenario would emulate the situation that everyone hoped to avoid but feared would happen anyway – a full-scale invasion of the Aurigan Coalition by the Taurian Concordat. In this simulation, the Taurians had deployed the Concordat Commandos to Panzyr II and tasked them with capturing Zherdevskiy City. A single Taurian heavy lance would attack the city from the south, attempting to bypass the capital's defences by infiltrating through an arctic ravine. The First Decimis Fusiliers would be tasked with intercepting the Commandos and making sure no Taurian mechs broke through.

Mike flipped through the operation’s planning document, hunting for any last-minute errors or problems. Mike was testing the Fusiliers, but he also wanted to see how his own lance handled piloting heavier mechs. That was one of the benefits of using a simulator – you could familiarise yourself with any mech you liked in a no-risk environment.

Oh, this looks like fun. For once we're going to have a bit of a weight advantage, or disadvantage perhaps due to the enemy's lance being a good deal quicker than ours. Also, we should count ourselves lucky we're fighting in the cold cause some of our mechs would overheat very easily without it. Some of them still will if they go all out

Could, but won't. This is a simulated part of an offensive campaign with potentially limited restock opportunities, verisimilitude decrees full ammo bins.

A 5/8/5 55 tonner is a sweet spot for a mech of the era, the Dervish is essentially fire support early and finishing off late. We have very solid lance that will be tough for opfor to deal with.

Some ammo tips:

The Marauder should come light, with about 12 shots of AC/5 ammo. The MAD-3R's left torso is a notorious deathtrap because the only component there is an ammo bin which means a crit is a guaranteed detonation. You won't need the autocannon once the ranges close, and with 12 shots you'll probably end the fight with ammo to spare. If you want to play safe, come with 8 shots and fire them off early. The Marauder is only safe from an instant-kill detonation if the number of shots its carrying is 3 or less, so use the ammo early and fast.

The Thunderbolt's SRM-2 and Machine Guns are really risky. The SRM-2 will function just fine with between 6 and 9 shots (24-36 ammo explosion damage), and the Machine Guns can get away with 3 shots per gun. You probably won't need to use them, but they are free damage if something gets into kicking range.

The Quickdraw is a refit with all of its weapons facing forward, so it's actually living the best possible life a Quickdraw ever could. It has too much SRM ammo, but since it's better at closer ranges you'll probably need more. 12 shots is probably plenty.

The Dervish has always had way too much SRM ammo. SRM-2s are an afterthought, so if you cut the ammo down to about 8 shots per bin you'll probably have plenty. The bins are arm mounted though, and even with 8 shots that's still a 32 damage ammo explosion. For added fun, ask if Scintilla will let you carry Infernos (and bring 4-6 shots in that case). The Dervish has the flexibility to bring like, 8 shots of standard ammo and 4-6 infernos as well, since it has two bins. The downside is you won't be draining your bins evenly.

If the Dervish brings Infernos, the Thunderbolt may want to as well. I'd drop the Thunderbolt's SRM-2 ammo to 4-6 shots as well if they're bringing infernos.

One other nasty surprise the Dervish (and probably nobody else) could do, would be to hot-load the LRMs. That means all your LRMs will be armed in their launchers, which removes the minimum range penalty. The downside is: if you take a launcher crit you could also suffer an ammunition explosion, so it's very high risk. I'm only mentioning it because the Dervish is honestly kind of a piece of poo poo so giving it a little extra close range hitting power isn't terrible. It's not something I'd suggest in a normal campaign since it does raise the chance that the Dervish will explode spectacularly before the mission ends; but since this is a simulator it's a "safe" choice to surprise cadets with.

Edit: It's a pity we're too early for surprise Dead-Fire SRMs or Precision Ammo. The Marauder pot-shotting fast moving light 'mechs with Precision AC/5 ammo would be amusing.
