Screening armor with infantry doesn't necessarily result in your taking fewer casualties per day, it just helps the armor do its actual job. If that helps you win the war, it's normally considered worth it, and probably results in fewer casualties in the long term.

The IDF ground invasion of Gaza doesn't have any achievable goals. They are casualty averse. They are not organized or trained for the job. The only metrics they can actually make progress towards are maximizing the number of Palestinians killed and minimizing the number of Israelis killed. The former is the IAF's job, which means the army is just going to whatever it needs to do to minimize its daily bodycount while satisfying the mandate that they "loving do something"--irrespective of any broader operational or strategic picture (there isn't one).

You’re right. I hadn’t thought of it like that. that’s the reason there’s no infantry escort, because the army’s only job is to be there and not die

Not to be confused with meat.

As we speak, Hitler 2 is already thinking of a way to worm out of explaining that the military killed a ton of the hostages. "Hamas executed them all" or something probably, it would be extremely stupid considering the whole purpose of taking hostages but they'd buy it. Maybe.

Protests in Bahrain have to be authorized by the government, and they've authorized a few at this point. There was a pause where they weren't issuing permits, but as of this weekend I believe they're giving them out again. (One of the locals in our D&D group is keeping us appraised on which ones have permits since half the group are expats and don't want to get deported by showing up at the wrong one!)

The quality of the reserve tanks, especially those Merkava 3s are unknown. It seems like they are mostly using their modernized Merkava 4s and have been doing so for a while.

The real question is if the IDF wants to have to start using downgraded equipment once they have lost quite a bit of it. Admittedly damaged tanks are not destroyed but the question becomes how far Israel wants to take it.

on the other hand, if an idf tank is knocked out in gaza right now it might as well be irrecoverable. not like the hamas tunnel commandos would have any harder of a time taking out a recovery vehicle than the tank itself

So the fact that the IDF haven't 'rescued' any more hostages after that first lady seems to confirm the suspicion at the time that she wasn't ever actually a hostage right? Like there were a few suspicious things at the time about whether she was ever even taken hostage in the first place. You'd have thought if they were capable of rescuing one before they'd even established a foothold in Gaza that they would have a few more by now, but just radio silence...

Oh sure, a Frenchman can become a general at 24, but when an Israeli becomes a major at 25, it's suddenly a farce.

That doesn't make any sense, if she was a fake hostage, she'd hardly have been presented with a script which mostly consisted of saying "Hamas treated me and the other hostages kindly and with dignity and consideration"
The release of those two ladies seems to have been managed between Hamas, Qatar and the Red Crescent, Israel does not appear to have been involved in any way with their release. If I remember correctly, Israel specifically said it would not negotiate for their release.
Certainly Israel does not want any more hostages to come out and say the only thing that really frightened us was your constant bombing.

I think this is in reference to the IDF reserve soldier who was posting on Instagram into the week after Oct 7, and was only added to the list of the missing on the day she was rescued or whatever.

if a hamas unit captures a disabled merkava tank it automatically transforms into a tunnel tank upon repair. its main cannon is replaced by a Seismic Pulse Emitter allowing it to attack from below dealing large damage directly above the unit and stunning/disabling infantry in a wider aoe. a captured APC becomes a Subterranean APC which can travel both above and below ground and dock for repairs and troop replenishment at underground garages and bases.
