pretty sure they mean the various brand new cryptocurrencies that alameda poured money into, because Sammy's reasoning was that they just needed one to be the next bitcoin/dogecoin/etherium to turn a profit

every one of alameda's "investments" that just turned out to a rugpull or lose everything to "a hacker" was paid for by FTX's customers

e: to blatantly riff off of Dan Olsen, SBF was convinced he was playing a game of blackjack where if he could get exactly a 30, the dealer had to give him the casino.

But he wasn't even in a casino, he was just stumbling along an endless series of Peanuts-style merchant stalls and handing all the Lucys a sack of FTX customers' money

Whenever you see a headline that's 'Facing X years', it's always the latter because that's the more exciting headline.

SBF is a first offender with no previous record, which usually helps a lot in mitigation for financial stuff as well. But as Foxfire already pointed out, the sheer amount of money he stole blows through the roof of the 'How much money = How hosed you are' table by over an order of magnitude. So the sentencing isn't going to go well anyway.

Edit: Just realised. The original CoinDesk article that kicked this off was exactly a year from the guilty verdict.

From magazine front pages as the Billionaire 'next Warren Buffet' to being completely destroyed in a single year, that's a hell of a trip.

Don't forget law enforcement seems to be trying to make an example of SBF, so the sentencing is probably gonna be extra harsh to send the message "Don't mess with old money".
