Nelson Mandingo posted:Roem is apparently predicted to win. So Virginia is locked up for dems. I can see why Youngkin is against abortion, when his presidential aspirations were terminated before viable. Where are you seeing that it's locked up? 10 races are called for Democrats, 8 races are called for Republicans, and 21 are needed for a majority. Roem was favored to win. These are the five races that are likely going to determine the outcome, and none of them has been officially called yet: Edit: To be clear, I hope you're right, but I think your call is very premature.

Not the biggest deal tonight but I really hate the pattern of how votes come in now. Right out the gate it's usually huge blue waves as early votes get tallied, then it's nothing but lovely red counties coming in 3-5k at a clip to probably swing it back the other way, then a restless night of sleep to see how votes from counties where people actually live shake out. It sucks.

In hyper local news the dude running for the local school board ranting about Marxism and litter boxes got embarrassed and we retained all of our qualified, service-oriented professionals. Kind of annoying the moms for liberty jerks who lost last time didn’t run and we still get these kinds of people on the ballot. Feels like just a matter of time before having to vote for 3 candidates at a time nets someone a W because of their spot on the ballot or something equally goofy. Edit: dang a school board nearby that has been electing weird conservatives to the BOE for a while just elected competent people. I hope the people voting like this right now are motivated again in a year. Could be huge for state level politics. i am a moron fucked around with this message at 03:27 on Nov 8, 2023 |

I'm curious to see how long this manufactured evangelical "bum-rush the school board with right-wing grievances to take it over" strategy is gonna last. Like yes there are a few "successes" here and there but even in the high-profile cases where MAGA types take over school boards and start banning books and pride flags, it seems like virtually everyone in the school district goes "wow this sucks complete rear end" if you put a microphone in front of them.

This is one of the states where Republicans are leaning hard into fighting against woke in schools, with the northern counties straight-up ignoring guidelines from governor Youngkin, who wants them to systematically misgender trans kids, etc. This one is theoretically a non partisan election, but the top three (there are three seats open) are all Dem endorsed.

One quick note about this related to Virginia elections. There was a very big controversy in Hanover County earlier this year about an unelected school board banning a bunch of books: https://richmond.com/news/local/edu...7c8e1b95ca.html Hanover is a *heavily* Republican county, but it pissed off enough of their residents that a ballot proposition for direct election of school board members is currently winning by a decent margin:

I keep saying this: the Democrats' overperformance in special elections will translate to the general. Midterms were a disaster for the GOP when the party in power almost always gets crushed. They keep losing special elections in loving 2023, an off off year. This is when the GOP is supposed to be making gains. They couldn't do it in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023, and they will do it with Trump on trial in 2024? Bullshit! People won't vote for Biden after voting for every other Democratic centrist? Bullshit!
