community seasons 1 and 2 had an insanely goated writing team. dan harmon is capable of being funny but he seems like he thrives in very communal and broad writing rooms which is a shame bc he seemed to drive a lot of his best writers off community by being a dickhead

Yeah, he strikes me as a guy who got lucky once off the work of other people who didn't get recognition and now gets infinite chances to gently caress up again. His whole hero's journey thing always struck me as baby's first media analysis

DACK FAYDEN posted:also same question but the D&D skit The dead alewives had other writers like Rob Schrab. Dan is funny but works best with a team of others who can riff of him and also guide him. He's also a self indulgent rear end in a top hat who burns bridges if you try ti guide him. E: beaten, but I at least added stuff about the original d&d skit. You can see the same with HarmonQuest, where it's best when others get a chance to be funny and at its worst when Harmon wants to whine about stuff like his girlfriend leaving him or throw a 'self aware' pity party. OwlFancier posted:I mean yeah, literally it doesn't say it, it demonstrates it constantly, but diegetically it says all of the bad stuff is good actually. The guy is literally saying that it's good that he got blown to bits because it made him manly. Hero worship, martyrdom, hyper masculinity et al are all very much a part of the values and desired traits that fascists have or want. Literally the Nazis built memorials around the dead founding members from the Putsch and they held annual ceremonies at their tombs which was in the middle of downtown Munich. If someone agrees with these things then the satire is definitely lost on them I can totally see that scene being interpreted as a cautionary one of how much harder being a grunt is versus Albanez going into the cushy Air Force, which is a debate and teasing point that already actually exists as a rivalry between the services in the United States.

Just sayin, when I was a dumb (still dumb fyi) ten-year-old, the Air Force was running on « you will Learn Skills dork » and the Marine Corps was running on « we will teach you to sword fight a balrog in full dress uniform » Given they also had recruiters roaming the school halls, it wasn’t hard to pick who you wanted to maybe join

The biggest sign of having no cultural impact is when even a dummy who knows nothing about a culture can still map an empire and has strong opinions about them 600 years later. But jokes aside the Yuan Dynasty was the Mongols, and was an incredibly important era involving advances in math, gunpowder, and literature/drama. The racist and dumb person is basically doing the exact opposite thing they'd do for fallen European empires where they'd find any flimsy "because these two kingdoms had an overlapping border they're practically a continuation, and because the European landmass did not cease to exist in this window, I can claim the UK is basically Rome."

The Wicked ZOGA posted:I know gently caress all about it but that cannot possibly be true can it It isn't. The Yuan dynasty kept the silk road open which lead to large amounts of cultural and technological transmission across Eurasia. Combined with the spread of the plague it established the conditions for the Renaissance in Europe. Elsewhere the Mongol successor states changed the balance of power in Eastern Europe that led to the rise of Muscovy as the local hegemon and eventually the Russian Empire. They established the Mughal empire which conquered and ruled most of the Indian subcontinent for a few centuries and smashed up Western Asia establishing the conditions for the rise of the Ottoman Empire. It's no exaggeration to say that Mongol Empire was directly responsible for the transmission from the Medieval period to the beginning of the Early Modern period across all of Eurasia. Because the Mongols didn’t make a bunch of statues and big stone buildings, and because these people have never cracked open a textbook on central Asian history, they imagine the Mongolian empire didn’t have much of a cultural impact
