When i took microbiology in the 90s, we used mouth pipettes. No harmful bacteria were used, and you drat well keep an eye on what you'r e doing when sucking up a suspension of E. coli. No incidents in that class, because eww.

Nobody has ever had to pipette by mouth, it's always been a terrible idea done for speed or precision or laziness.

I vaguely remember being taught to do that in biology and thinking it was a very stupid idea when we have syringes.

Swilo posted:Nobody has ever had to pipette by mouth, it's always been a terrible idea done for speed or precision or laziness. The actual pipette bulb is better in every way. Just takes a little skill. It's not faster or more precise to suck on it. Please do not pipette by mouth ever even with things you don't think are harmful.

When I was taught pipetting techniques ages and ages ago, the class's natural reaction of disgust at being told to put their mouth anywhere near a suspension of an E. coli culture was enough to dissuade us from doing anything of the sort.
