It's a German/European thing primarily. Aldi does it in every country they operate in.

It won't stop someone from stealing a cart (a coin is pretty cheap for that) but it directs people to return them to their right places, saving employees time. If someone can't be bothered to get their coin back, then someone else will feel the greed and return the cart.

In my childhood one chain had a cart returning system where there was a cart returning machine that printed you a sticker when you returned the cart. By collecting enough of those stickers in a booklet you could get, I don't know. Some ridiculously small discount? But since me and my friend had too much spare time during weekends, we would often end up there collecting carts from other people while our parents were doing shopping. It was a fierce competition with the pensioners, mind you.

I guess Faxanadus is just new to Aldi. For a long time they didn't accept credit cards in the US at all, and when they started accepting credit cards their prices were hiked noticeably.

I wish they'd go back.

Most places in Europe and Canada eliminated their equivalent of the $1 and $2 bills and replaced them coins a long time ago.

It was very annoying because all change always comes with a bunch of giant coins.

Safeways here are rapidly increasing what they keep behind locked cabinets. For example last month they had most of the candy locked up, to go with all the common stuff like alcohol, toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc. As previously mentioned, the main effect it has is to make me buy all of those things somewhere else.

You really are a louse...
Aldi is probably the best grocery store chain in the city I live in. They even have a surprisingly good stock of vegan foods, including some of the best vegan frozen burgers I've ever had.

My only complaint is they added self checkout counters to the one I go to (it went from like 6 regular checkout lines down to like, 2 and 8 self checkout) and they don't even staff the regular lines outside of peak hours.

I went into an Aldi's the first time when I was out of state a few months ago. Tried to pull a cart out and it wouldn't budge, and then realized I needed a quarter, but I didn't have one. A nice man gave me a quarter and it worked out. It's a good system, just non-obvious for many people. They really should have baskets though.

I've also never been to Aldi. There's one that's not far from me, but my preferred store is even closer and easier to get to. I should still stop in someday.

Sometimes, they have a local pseudo-union negotiation board if it is a small or local industry not covered by a union. They also do set compensation rates individually for lots of jobs that aren't service industry or manufacturing, it's not 100% group rates for everyone in Sweden.

Those are Workers Councils. They have a lot of influence over what the megacorp I work for does in terms of employment issues like worker privacy. The ones in Germany basically dictate what data we can collect on what our computers are actually doing. The guideline we have is "don't automatically collect any data that could be used in a disciplinary action." This came up today in reference to a tool that can collect data on interactions with a computer, as in keyboard and mouse activity. Our Legal people shot that down before we even told the Workers Councils what were were thinking of collecting.

Agreed.

Related to Elon, I was reading the news this morning and there's a SpaceX launch green lit for tomorrow and it reminded me how funny it is that Musk has to be so cool and synergistic by naming everything with an X; to the point that news outlets are referring to the new "X" platform as "formerly known as Twitter" as if it were Prince changing his name to the symbol. Except that Prince had artistic and business reasons for doing that. He wanted to own his music, which seems fair, and faced the ridicule which made him seem insane at the time but for which he was ultimately vindicated.

Musk just wants a loving X on poo poo because he thinks it's cool or edgy and modern. Why would you change a tech company's name that's so ubiquitous it created its own verb in the modern discourse and invite the confusion of "it's called this now but everyone knows it as this other thing that everyone already knows?" and most people still call it that.

Christ, "X" anything bullshit was played out before the 90's even ended for anything beyond the Xbox or internet porn. If Elon bought Fox News, he'd probably change the name to FoXXX and maybe add "NewZ". Or just Xnews.

Because X's are kewl. What a weirdo.
