I understand it in the older generation, but for most people under the age of like 50-60, this isn't a belief they've naturally arrived at through their own lived experiences. (Also, as has come up in this thread before, the origins of Zionism have nothing to do with "a response to the Holocaust," with early Zionists even looking down on Holocaust victims. A large part of this mindset has been deliberately promoted by Israel in service of its own goals.)
