What's this? More viewers watching Super Mario World than Super Mario RPG on Twitch?

It's because as of 1pm PST today, Grand Poo World 3 is officially released. GPW3 is the 3rd kaizo Super Mario World ROM hack by BarbarousKing, and the most anticipated Mario fan game/hack of the year. After 3+ years of work and delays, you can now play it, if you desire difficult platforming and Super Mario Wonder just didn't do it for you.

The official page for it will be up at a later time on SMW Central, but for now you can grab the patch and patch your SMW base ROM file from this page:

https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=files&u=32572

The site had like 3000+ people trying to download the file and was crashing, earlier. You can find all the tools you need on the site to apply the patch, but you'll need to search the internet for the base SMW ROM file on your own. Boot up your favorite emulator (SNES9x still works great, or Retroarch) or put it on an SD card and use with a flash cart of your choice.

I can vouch for this one, my wife hooked the computer up to the tv just so we can go through it together!

Some people may be put out by the dialogue being a mix of old timey language and new slang, as well as transliteration accents of various kinds, but I personally am a fan of its sense of humor. It's like Redwall, but for gays. (There are a lot of lgbt characters, including an unabashed bisexual, which is oddly less common than you'd think).

Also all of your weapons and stuff are regular human items. The bisexual rat uses a scaplel for a spear, for example!

Oh, this looks nice. From what I can gather I'm guessing it plays similarly to Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, in the "visual novel and there's stuff" subgenre, i.e. there's some minigames and added mechanics to keep track of, but the game still largely progresses through straightforward dialog selection.

I got early access to it, and I liked it quite a bit. Interestingly the prequel game thing has ... a subset of the same interactions with items in the rooms, and many character dialogues however the plots are somehow completely different, which is a strange thing to be true, but somehow is.

The new title does a good job of portraying "being in a time loop is pretty miserable" ala groundhog's day, and at several times i was frustrated alongside the main character with the game, but not actually at the game?

This is more of a curiosity, but there aren't that many opportunities to say that a game originally from 1989 just got a brand new release on Steam in the past week.

Star Fleet II: Krellan Commander is a complex and detailed space war simulation. Starting with just a single Krellan battlecruiser, as you rise in the game's seven ranks (each rank has five missions), you'll gain more complexity, such as escorts, planetary invasions, and eventually full sector command.

Each mission is a randomly-generated galactic war sandbox, and while you have specific objectives, how you accomplish them is entirely up to you. No other space game gives you this much depth, detail and control. Fight, board, and capture ships, send landing parties and full invasion forces down to planets. Bombard cities (sparingly, as you want as many cities intact as possible) from orbit while avoiding planetary defense fire from high technology planets. It's all here.
100% positive out of 26 reviews.

For further context, back in 2018, the original developer of the game decided to fix up and polish the game beyond its existing state (which had originally launched as a fairly buggy mess, which disappointed fans of Star Fleet I, and the original publisher went under soon after release through a hostile takeover), and after 5 years of playtesting and programming, it's officially out on Steam. It's very much still a 1989 MSDOS simulation game that expects you to read the manual, though, but hey there's some novelty in a 34-year old game getting active development, yeah?

Adding my own voice of support for Cobalt Core. Its deckbuilder gameplay loop is quite satisfying and the story is surprisingly good, carried mostly by some charming character writing. It's a bit sillier than I'd like, I'd rather it was taken down about 20%, but it's still a good time.

Finished Little Goody Two Shoes and ended up mildly disappointed.

Presentation-wise, it was A+. Art, animation, music, sound design, all on point, no notes.

The resolution to the main mystery is serviceable if not mind blowing. It would be very much at home as a pretty good sidequest in The Witcher 3, but can't really carry a whole game on its own. The romances are... perfunctory. The nun is definitely the best one.

Gameplay is where it falls down the hardest, but in ways very typical of the indie throwback horror genre, so if you're more into that than I am it probably won't bother you. The blurb on Steam claims "all your decisions matter", but the bulk of the decision points only increment or decrement the suspicion meter, which is realistically never going over 2/10 unless you're going out of your way to get that particular game over.

There are two components to the gameplay: daytime resource management constrained by how well you can do at a selection of extremely janky, not particularly fun minigames (or alternately figuring out that the save file is unobfuscated JSON that you can easily edit for infinite money), and the nighttime puzzle sections where you have to guess the thing the developer wanted you to do. Those started out reasonable enough, and they've got great thematics and atmostphere, but the Thursday/Friday night sections were both obtuse and frustrating enough to make me kind of resent the whole thing. A stealth section where you can't see anything and enemies come rocketing at you at light speed from offscreen isn't tense or scary, it's just annoying.

The cutscene fast-forward feature doesn't work in almost exactly the places where you want it most, like in the pageantry before a boss fight, or during the entire ending sequence that you need to repeat 9 times to see all the endings, which was pretty aggravating.

Been excited about this for a while after playing the demo a year ago, just a delightful romp through surreal Australia retail work. Hoping I can crack into it soon and see how it meets expectations.

I played about 7 hours of this and just wanted to give my thoughts:

It's rough. It is, unfortunately, closer to YIIK than it is to Lisa or Earthbound. Absolutely set the battle speed to fastest ASAP and maybe turn it to automatic - it just turns the basic attack minigames off.

The minigames start fun, but you're asked to do them so many times per fight and you only have two or three different ones per enemy or boss - the bosses are the big issue for this, since they're scripted to last X amount of turns rather than usually caring about the amount of damage you do. This has the added effect of making most of your stats, outside of perhaps defense and HP, largely useless. Your special moves also tend to be less effective than your basic attacks - I've heard that your first, cheapest special move becomes a one-turn kill for most random encounters if you can get the mashing right later on, though.

The story is also super meandering after the demo section, feeling like a completely different game than the mean, focused experience of the first hour. I didn't finish it, so it's possible it gets back to that energy, but most of the negative reviews I've seen that have finished the game say that it doesn't.

The item management is also super frustrating - most of the time you have ten inventory slots, several of which will get taken up by your equipment and any key items you've picked up. If you don't want to continually toss items not knowing if they have any use later you have to continually backtrack to item storage points, which are weirdly rarer than the free, full restore points.

I don't know. I might be too hard on it because I really loved that demo, so if you're able to separate the rest of the game from that and you really love or are at least able to tolerate the slightly-too-long warioware minigames, you might still like the game. The look and the music are still fantastic. Just go in with the right expectations and maybe wait for a sale.

I was a little confused because I did see them on steam, but they didn't have 'remastered' in the title and the release date was noted as Nov 30, 1997 for Turok 1 and Dec 10, 1998 for Turok 2. Which I'm assuming was their actual original release dates.

Meanwhile Turok 3's release date was yesterday and it does have 'remastered' in the title. So I wasn't sure what to think of that, but yeah it looks like actually they are all remastered, maybe just some marketing decision to change the format on their part, my b.

Not too far in, but it's got the city building hook, and has a secondary city building hook underground where it feels a little like dungeon keeper where you build up utility rooms to provide certain builders to help mine and do other utility functions, while you expand up top in your normal city. Very slick so far.
