I've been hanging out in their discord and there should be some pretty major UI enhancements and more specific ways to do the lyrics this week sometime. There are two models Suno has, V1 and V2. The one on Discord right now is V1 and has the ability to extend the song, specify where lyrics goes, more controls like that, but is in mono and generally lower quality. The one on the website is V2 and is a better model so you get stereo and generally better outputs with the improvements, but it lacks the abilities to mess with it through the UI like discord and the V1. This week is supposed to be when they will be at parity with discord having the V2 model and the website having the same controls that discord has.

The lyrics just being missing isn't that they are actually missing, it's a strange interaction it has with whatever GPT system it's running in the background to generate the lyrics. If you just spam the word "instrumental" you'll get lyrics printed out that say "instrumental track here o so fine, you know how to read my mind" but the musical interpretation of that somehow sees "ah, instrumental, no lyrics" and will instead put music there? It's still doing stuff with whatever it thinks are lyrics, but its just music instead. You see it a lot of you do some jazzy stuff as those instruments sometimes are the singers, so they system interprets those as music more often. Like this:

I haven't come across any recent news coverage about this, the update that made suno.ai as good as it currently is landed about a week ago, most of what I could find was from long before that.

I guess there's other stuff happening, things are imploding over at OpenAI and I think people might be a bit fatigued by the onslaught of news stories that trigger their existential dread, but being able to generate songs of this quality seems like a big deal?

They have some kind of filtering happening so that you can't request a song by an existing band, but maybe there are some creative ways around this?

This leads me to believe that their training dataset might contain actual copyrighted music, but they think they can avoid getting into trouble by not allowing people to ask for copyrighted music when prompting.

i think the music generation thing could be way more interesting if it generated isolated vocals and a bunch of midi tracks that you could import into a DAW to mess with the instruments and mixing, fingers crossed someone makes a tool for that down the line

It might simply be news fatigue about AI stuff too. With the tentative rulings about training data being ok, music being more oblique? Harder to get into than visual things? Just not as much attention to it.
This was always going to happen. Training these systems is like learning to control fire or understanding how to grow crops, it's a process that can't be unlearned once you get it. Costs keep dropping, hardware keeps getting more and more capable and the way we interact with this stuff, visual, text, audio, is inherently analog so it can't be 'tagged' or somehow made impossible to train computers on.

This suno.ai is incredible, like was said earlier, this is like getting access to the very first image image generators back in August of 2022. This is music's point where it's past over some line somewhere that makes it 'good enough'. I thought it would be music first, then lyrics somehow afterwards or separately, but no gently caress it why not just do the whole thing at once? Data is data is data and none of these systems understand anything they output.

It also solidifies my belief that we're heading here with movies and TV shows as well. It's the same trajectory, there is nothing to TV or movies that make it impossible in the face of images, text and now on the cusp of full-blown songs.

I've sent Suno to a few musicians I know and it's interesting seeing the difference in reaction with this compared to the reaction of artists to image generation stuff. Anecdotal of course but the musicians I sent it to love it, are super excited by it, and love playing with it as opposed to artists with image generation stuff who overall don't like it/see it as a threat. That might possibly be leading to less news because a lot of the online discourse around image generation stuff was argument/debate about how ethical it is, which brought a lot of awareness to it.

But yeah I'm sure AI fatigue is part of it too. Even I am pretty fatigued by AI stuff and not nearly as into it as I used to be.

Hi there.
Suno is really good at genres that follow consistent patterns and have a recognisable “texture”. Especially the rhythms it comes up with are catchy and sometimes really interesting. It’s also amazing at recreating the sound of electronic and distorted instruments. In turn it struggles immensely with music that tries to avoid predictable patterns. For example it is absolutely terrible at anything classical. When prompted in that direction it seems to either create a repetitive movie soundtrack or a Christmas carol. And the instruments sound like bottom shelf midi versions of the real stuff.

I noticed the same with ChatGPT where it is really good at creating things that flow in a predictable manner but it is terrible at making stuff that tries to be erratic and unpredictable.

Yeah, the subject matter of whatever you want the lyrics to do directly impacts what it spits out in predictable ways. Try to make smooth adult contemporary stuff only works if you have lyrics that are relatable to that. I got a killer song about the Theia Impact theory done perfectly in that style, but it makes sense since the words used are things that are also used in typical sappy relationship and love songs. Cosmic dance, from the ashes, merging together, love song language. But when you try to do the same style about slim jims it fucks up and it simply can't do it.

Perhaps this week when supposedly you'll get more options for generation in the webUI this can be explored further since you won't have to rely directly on a single text prompt being run through what is most certainly ChatGPT or something really similar.

A bit related I tried making a rap song titled "Rib Kid Absolutely Killed That Guy" since the rumour is Rib Killed literally murdered someone (It's not true) but the LLM behind this would output the lyircs, directly even, literally saying and singing "Rib Kid Absolutely Killed That Guy" but the context of 'killed' was Rib Kid's rhymes were so good that 'that guy' was destroyed socially, not literally. I didn't push it further trying to get a rap about actual murder.

Neat!

Like with animations or generated video the generated music has temporal issues. Needs a directorial A.I. that handles general overarching composition on top of the interpreting user requests layer that hands tasks off to the more specialized A.I.

A more specific media centric artificial general intelligence. A narrow artificial general intelligence is a bit of an oxymoron but the onion layer approach of closely networked A.I. seems like a plausible approach to some applications.

Things are certainly moving forward rapidly and it will be fascinating to see what the A.I. landscape is like in a couple years.

I have to wonder if it'll be independently generated stems, or the generation of a single track that then goes through a post-process step, identifying and isolating everything into stems. Given the way this AI stuff tends to work I figure the latter?
