Yeah it's usually the male that gets the flashy showy adaptations to attract mates. There's an evolution reason but I'm too tired to look it up. Manes also protect the neck in ritual combat.

if you have a housecat that likes to fight and gets to fight, you'll probably notice they get scabs around the mane area, it's a safe area for the aforementioned "ritual combat", when you need to be concerned for your cat is when they get scabs around their tummy and face.

The mane is basically armor against that sort of thing. The male lion's purpose in life, since it doesn't hunt, is to intimidate and fight other males. The mane helps with that.

The male lions do actually hunt though. Just less often since it's mostly to feed themselves rather than a communal thing I believe. So less total deadbeat and more large adult son who pays their own bills but still lives at home.

A dark mane is also considered more desirable to female lions. The mane tends to darken as the males age. Lions are probably the most overrated animal on the planet. They're lazy, dirty bullies who steal the kills of smaller animals rather than doing the work themselves.

It differs a little bit by population, but yeah, hyenas are much more successful hunters on average. In the Ngorogoro crater the lions are almost entirely specialized in stealing hyena kills which is very funny to me but probably very annoying for the hyenas.
