Ulf Kristersson (M) felt forced to leave the open question period in Gothenburg on Tuesday when it got rowdy in the audience.

- There is a kind of terrorist romance in Sweden that I am incredibly concerned about, says the Prime Minister.

"You support genocide" was one of the things shouted from the audience when Ulf Kristersson (M) held an open question and answer session at the Pustervik pub in Gothenburg together with Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) on Tuesday.

At question time, it became somewhat heated and emotional with many questions about the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Several people were removed from the meeting due to disorder and after half an hour the Prime Minister chose to cancel prematurely.
Kristersson: "Terrible life"

Ulf Kristersson now says to SVT that what happened on Tuesday was unacceptable.

- It was a terrible life. People shouted at each other, disrupted the meeting, did everything to prevent it from being carried out. That's not how democracy should work in Sweden and I'm not going to adapt to it.

When the prime minister at one point called Hamas a terrorist organization, part of the audience started booing - which according to Kristersson is about a "terrorist romance".

- It suggests that there is a kind of terrorist romance in Sweden that I am incredibly concerned about. It is perfectly legitimate to have different opinions about the conflict in the Middle East, but it is a completely different thing to destroy meetings where you are supposed to be able to discuss that issue. I am concerned that conflicts in other parts of the world find their way directly into Sweden in this way.
Strandhäll (S) critical

The interrupted meeting has on Wednesday aroused strong reactions. Social Democrat Annika Strandhäll believes that Ulf Kristersson should have handled the criticism in a different way than leaving the meeting.

- He probably needs to expect that people will come to these open meetings with their concern and anger. You have to manage that as prime minister, she says.

Widespread abuse

Research by Save the Children published in July found that Palestinian minors in Israeli detention endure physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Some 86 percent said they had been beaten, 69 percent strip-searched and nearly half of them injured at the point of arrest, some of them incurring gunshot wounds and broken bones.

According to research by DCIP, based on testimonies from 766 children detained by the Israeli army between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2022, 59 percent were arrested at night, with 97 percent reporting having their hands bound, and 86 percent blindfolded.

Children reported being interrogated at unknown locations without the presence of a parent or a lawyer, and often deprived of food and water.

They often gave confessions while enduring verbal abuse, threats, physical and psychological violence.

Military trials

Israel is the only country that systematically prosecutes minors in military courts, which often accept confessions obtained by coercion.

An estimated 500-700 children, some as young as 12, are tried in military courts every year, the most common charge being stone-throwing, which carries a 20-year prison sentence.

DCIP also documented the widespread “routine” detainment of child detainees in solitary confinement.

In 1991, Israel ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) which states that children should only be detained as a last resort.

But a series of policy changes have created loopholes allowing the Israeli authorities to convict children.

In August 2016, Israel amended a law that stated that children under the age of 14 could not be held criminally responsible, in order to charge Ahmed Manasra, 13 at the time of his arrest, with attempted murder.
