This is a pretty big overreaction to a trade in November.

fwiw the Mariners freed up $5.5 million in salary between this deal and the Urias deal.

Not a huge bump in flexibility but hopefully it moves the needle somewhere else?

I’m gonna echo the lookout landing podcast and say if you are needing $6mil roster flexibility at the Mariners payroll your broke and that is inconceivable

m's ain't broke but the ownership is cheap af. i can see eugenio being cooked offensively and this working out okay, but it's penny-wise and pound foolish at the very best. moving on from geno could be a done deal and this could've been the best value they can get for him, but zero thought went into the optics and clubhouse intangibles of the move. it does not make me confident in the stanton-dipoto regime

5 years ago is 2018

It might be the stink of Bavasi and Z but Dipoto rebuilt a completely destroyed farm and minor league org in 2 years, signed and developed the best player to put on a Mariners uniform since A-Rod, and just finished the 2nd best 3 year run of baseball in Mariners history.

I'm not saying he's a certified great GM but he's at least good at his job and the past 5 years has been better than any other 5 year stretch in Mariners baseball.

So the Mariners players complained that the team needs to spend more, then the front office told them to shut the gently caress up and salary dumped Suarez.

I'm suddenly reminded of 2003, when the Mariners were floundering, Jeff Nelson criticized the front office for not making any big trades and they responded by trading him back to the Yankees.

from 1995-2001 the Mariners made 4 postseasons including 3 ALCS’s and also tied the all time Wins record

I’m no Mariners history expert but any 5 year stretch in there looks better to me than the past 5 years

2001 is weird because it invalidates everything but was also a shooting star kind of moment that no one planned on and no one expected them to follow up with anything near that performance. 21/22/23 is their 2nd best 3 year stretch of wins in franchise history, and hopefully 2024 isn't following the same path as 2004.
