Nah, 生 still means life or birth in most of the words it's in, like "pre" means before in English, but the pronunciation is based on the actual conversational Japanese for those words, which isn't based on Chinese like the (kanji) writing system is.

It's a bit like if Latin was still used for academic writing in English, but when you read it aloud, you say the English word with the same meaning.

It's kind of even better, because you get to see 🍆 on the page and decide on the fly, pure context vibes, whether it's pronounced "eggplant", "mad-apple", "aubergine", or "dick".

tractor fanatic posted:

Right, but nihon and yamato have different meanings, but are also probably used in a lot of similar contexts, then writing both as "日本" seems really weird. Also, IIRC hiragana and katana are more modern inventions, so how would we even know that there existed wildly different pronunciations of 日本?

The point is that the social structure that pushed it wanted to say that there was no difference--"China draws these pictures to represent our land, our land is all ours and all of us, we call ourselves this, ergo they're the same thing simple as". All subsequent ones have differed for one reason or another.
"More modern" is also true but a bit deceptive, both are attested to the early 800s, no later than the system for diacritical marks on Chinese to ease learning, and both are heirs to a less standardized system of using non-cursive Chinese to represent both words and Japanese phonetics that sprung up within a generation or two of regular contact with China. That earlier system, the obsolete first form of Japanese writing, is the key here though; one of the earliest surviving examples, a book of poetry, contains a verse that must be in 5/7 meter but also reads

Man'yoshu poem #475; use as words which the reader must know as representing Japanese bolded, and Chinese words used to phonetically approximate Japanese italicized posted:

大日本
久邇乃京者
打靡
春去奴礼婆

Other people can explain better than I why in Chinese this comes out as dropped Scrabble tiles, but also in Chinese it's no meter at all while if taken as very early Japanese it reads perfectly as

*Japanese of the time did not accept two bare vowels in sequence, and many native diphthongs were once 1p2 before becoming 1f2, 1h2, and eventually 1(unvoiced)2. All p at the time that did not become unvoiced in this change is now h.

E: "だいにっぽん" is not an option there because that would be considered for poetic purposes (and probably pronounced at the time) "だいにちぽん" six morae and out of meter. "だいにほん" is not because にほん only arose later, as a result of those changes in the consonant which is now H and became completely unable to naturally geminate.

South Korea racing to be next in line for the fresh proxy war.

S. Korea partially suspends 2018 inter-Korean military accord

quote:

SEOUL, Nov. 22 (Yonhap) -- South Korea suspended part of a 2018 inter-Korean military tension reduction agreement Wednesday in response to North Korea's latest launch of a military spy satellite.

Under the proposal approved in an extraordinary Cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, Seoul will restore reconnaissance and surveillance activities around the inter-Korean border. President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is on a state visit to Britain, electronically approved the motion later in the day.

The move came after North Korea claimed success in its third attempt to place a spy satellite into orbit. The launch took place late Tuesday from a launch site in Tongchang-ri on North Korea's northwest coast.

"North Korea is clearly demonstrating that it has no will to abide by the Sept. 19 Military Agreement designed to reduce military tension on the Korean Peninsula and to build trust," Han said during the meeting.

North Koreans are trying to deceive their way into the most sacred of western professions

Kim’s IT army: How North Koreans are duping tech companies into hiring them

quote:

London: Using fake names, sham LinkedIn profiles, counterfeit work papers and mock interview scripts, North Korean IT workers are seeking employment in Western tech companies and deploying sophisticated subterfuge to get hired.

Landing a job outside North Korea to secretly earn hard currency for the isolated country demands highly developed strategies to convince Western hiring managers, according to documents reviewed by Reuters, an interview with a former North Korean IT worker and cybersecurity researchers.

The regime of Kim Jong-un has dispatched thousands of IT workers overseas – an effort that has accelerated in the last four years – to bring in millions to finance Pyongyang’s nuclear missile program, according to the United States, South Korea, and the United Nations.

“People are free to express ideas and opinions,” reads one interview script used by North Korean software developers that offers suggestions for how to describe a “good corporate culture” when asked. Expressing one’s thoughts freely could be met with imprisonment in North Korea.

The scripts totalling 30 pages, were unearthed by researchers at Palo Alto Networks, a US cybersecurity firm that discovered a cache of internal documents online, which detail the workings of North Korea’s remote IT workforce. The documents contain dozens of fraudulent resumes, online profiles, interview notes, and forged identities that North Korean workers used to apply for jobs in software development.

Reuters found further evidence in leaked dark web data that revealed some of the tools and techniques used by the workers to convince firms to employ them in jobs as far afield as Chile, New Zealand, the United States, Uzbekistan and the United Arab Emirates.

iirc india voted or abstained on a UN vote recently along the lines of various western proxies. my guess is they're still playing both sides.

China says Philippines enlisted ‘foreign forces’ to patrol South China Sea

quote:

The Philippines enlisted “foreign forces” to patrol the South China Sea and has been stirring up trouble since Tuesday, the southern theatre command of China’s military said on Thursday, in an apparent reference to the United States.

The military will maintain high vigilance, resolutely defend national sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and resolutely safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea, it said.

Philippine officials have said their military and the U.S. launched joint patrols on Tuesday in waters near Taiwan, a democratically governed island that China claims as its own, raising the possibility of further tensions with China.

“China has made clear its position to the Philippines and the U.S. that the Philippine-U.S. joint patrols must not undermine China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Wednesday.

The Philippine foreign ministry and the national security adviser’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Relations have soured between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea under Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr as Manila pivots towards closer ties with the U.S., which supports the Southeast Asian nation in its maritime disputes with China.
