IEC Site 113 Progress Report #014

1630. Company loyalists planted within the workers' union have stabilized the more radical elements. By swaying latest vote towards bare-knuckle bouts, we believe any potential violent inclinations towards IEC property and employees will be safely and pre-emptively dealt with.

A number of insurrectionary pamphlets have been discovered in employee possession. Those found with such subversive literature in the future will be fined.

1813. First of six planned renovations of dock reloading stations has begun. Each upgrade requires one steam core, in addition to one already used in existing structure.

Sir, a telegram from London! We're going to be cut off!
"The frost is coming sooner than expected. Royal Meteorological Society warns that the sea will freeze in 12 days, stopping all navigation and fishing. We will cease all shipments in 10 days. Start stockpiling materials and food. The evacuation by an icebreaker is planned in 18 days. It is IMPERATIVE that you complete the generator by then. Good luck."

2003. Transmission received and acknowledged, London. Please continue to send critical supplies while sea routes are available. We will do what we can until extraction.

2023. Improvements to fishing harbour and first reloading station complete.

An enormously huge locomotive lies on its side. It's a view both majestic and pathetic.

The engine is unbelievably huge, like a beached ship. It has overturned when the ground gave way under its massive weight and the tracks buckled. There's an inscription on its main boiler: "Crève-neige #12."
Surely the French have a taste for... dimensions. Pity that the land has let them down. Now we can only salvage the resources from this magnificent machine.

Crève-neige, the biggest locomotive we've ever seen, found its final destination in this remote, cold land.

2225. Foragers have discovered what it is the French have been working on and came to the same conclusion they surely did - repair and rerailment will be impossible. Several alloys used in engine construction are similar to IEC proprietary steel composites, and will be usable for generator construction efforts. Additionally, steam cores of French design can be adapted to IEC standards with minimal modification.

The tracks lead towards a large warehouse on the horizon.

Foragers continue following tracks.

Sir, the coming cold threw everyone off guard - if the forecasts are true it will make finishing construction that much more difficult.
Crew working on technologies started thinking about ways we could at least somewhat mitigate the coming cold. If you want to, some ideas could be developed into solutions, per your request.

2306. Engineering team brought to my desk proposal for new research and development stream in the field of Heat. These will be critical to construction efforts if temperature continues to trend downward as predicted.

The big double doors of the warehouse are open. Inside there's a stack of crates full of canned food with French labels.

As we take stock of the food supply, several workers appear and ask us, if we understand their French, whether the Crève-neige is coming soon, because living here is becoming unbearable. They've been apparently waiting for their train for quite some time, sustaining themselves on canned food.

0723. Foragers have found freight terminal of French railway. Inhabitant workers are apparently unaware of derailment.

We told the poor Frenchmen that nobody is coming for them. They immediately started packing their food, preparing to set out.

The warehouse is deserted.

There is nothing to profit from letting them starve, so the foragers send them on their way.

The railway track we follow leads towards an icebound plateau.

Our employees depart in different direction, still following tracks.

A group of workers' council representatives visits you to discuss the safety of the generator. "People are worried. We know now that traitors lurk among us. The reactionaries will stop at nothing to keep the old order, and they'll drat mankind in the process! Too much is at stake: we need to raise an armed militia and patrol the camp.

1405. Union continues to table proposals that would expand their influence and power relative to Company. They do not yet have sufficient armament to force their demands, only numbers.

The rails are covered with ice, sometimes disappearing under it. We follow them until they are no longer visible.

After the track disappeared under the ice, we followed its general direction for a couple of miles, seeing nothing on the horizon, then backtracked and fanned out, trying to find the place where the track comes back up. It seems that it does not.
Where did the track lead? We might never know.

We followed the Crève-neige track to this place, where it disappears under the ice.

1701. Foragers are unable to continue following tracks. They are redirected home.

0502. Extra rations may be allocated to ill in order to return them to work quicker - another election result spearheaded by loyalist workers.

0751. Foragers return to work site with raw food and vital resources. Steam cores will be put towards reloading station refurbishing efforts.

Something juts out from the rocks like a huge blade of dry grass.

Foragers at reindeer site report what appear to be rusting rails near their camp. Recently returned team dispatched to investigate whether it is connected to French rail project.

0912. Unexamined points of interest are increasingly further afield from base camp. Boosting forager speed again will increase expedience of traversal to remote landmarks.

Bloody hell, again? Come, Merton,

Sound of explosion comes from the Generator, and then din of terrified voices: a fire broke out in the nearly finished Core!
Many workers are trapped inside. We can evacuate them, but if the fire is allowed to spread unchecked, it will destroy the Core and forever crippled the Generator.

1349. Disaster in generator core averted thanks to fire dampers and recently installed protective structures. 12 class 1 workers badly wounded in accident but no progress on construction or operational efficiency lost otherwise.

1430. Even with steam reloading stations installed at dock designated for steel delivery, income is unable to match demand from foundry and machine shop. Optimisation of gathering may allow for more efficient production.

Current supercharge rate is 10% of progress for 5 steam exchangers. Researchers believe they may be able to improve that ratio to 20% for same number of exchangers.

2238. Productivity lost from injuries sustained due to sanctioned bare-knuckle bouts deemed acceptable in exchange for mitigated worker revolt risk.

2350. Final steam exchanger necessary for reloading station upgrades received. Temperature drop expected in one more day. If RMS forecasts hold true, more will follow. To maintain high levels of workplace morale, food will be expended at chapel and labour union building, then another vote held.

IEC Site 113 Progress Report #015

2352. Situation remains stable as majority of workers voted to institute no new laws. Tension between unionized and non-unionized workers, engineers, and new arrivals appears to have calmed somewhat. Attitude of IEC employees towards IEC management remains cool, but work will continue.

Hundreds of huge, extremely heavy rails lie here, partially sunken into the frozen ground.

A dump of rusty, extremely heavy rails.

1047. At request of foragers at reindeer hunting grounds, teams have exchanged roles. First team investigates rusting rails - apparently related to French project, though unconnected to railway.

We can see a cabin under a rock.

Foragers then move on to next landmark indicating human presence.

1051. Steam exchangers may now be used to progress generator construction by 20%.

The arsonist struck again at the construction site, this time during working hours. People ran blindly from the flames and 10 of them died in the inferno. Workers are furious: "Boss has their blood on his hands! We need militia to guard against arson and better safety to prevent casualties!"
Construction progress was set back considerably and the site is cluttered with fire debris. What is your priority?

1402. Fire was set to generator core again. Notify families of employee numbers 113-37, 113-77, 113-118, 113-122, 113-134, 113-145, 113-148, 113-149, 113-169, and 113-245. Repatriation will occur once bodies have been recovered and steel coffins prepared. Construction halted for rest of day.

1557. Coal burning braziers will be placed once temperature drops to intolerable levels. Temperature drop expected tomorrow morning, at which point tolerability will be assessed.

The cabin is sturdy and shielded from the prevailing winds by the rock.

A cast iron stove stands beside a desk and a sturdy chair. Two books lie on the desk: "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life" by Charles Darwin, M.A. and "Voyage au centre de la Terre" - a novel by Jules Verne.
There's also a crate of canned food here.

2211. Foraging team has found no sign of current habitation. Useful resources are taken. Literature, while edifying, is non-essential to construction efforts.

It looks like a huge storehouse of some sort.

Another artificial landmark sits within visual distance, and is designated new destination.

0002. New medics have arrived on site in preparation for cold-related illness spike. Attached is duplicate of Form ES-1301-U (Human Resources, Replacement) requisitioning replacements for deceased labour force.

0119. Reallocation of diminished workers takes place overnight so workers can read new assignment orders first thing upon waking. Lumber docks deemed redundant and will be gradually phased out and replaced.

0700. Temperature has fallen below freezing and snow is now sticking to ground. Assessments still show outdoor areas as liveable and indoors as comfortable, so brazier construction will not yet be initiated.

The store is filled with crates used to transport steam cores - dozens of them, enough to power an entire fleet of dreadnoughts. Most of the crates are empty.

The sign over the entrance says: "Ministre de la Marine et des Colonies, Entrepòt #4." It's not surprising that other nations also seek refuge in the North, but the scale of this operation is astonishing.
An ancient storekeeper opens a big ledger at our sight. The old man apparently took us for French engineers. "Bonjour messieurs. Voici vos noyaux de vapeur... veuillez signer ici... et ici... Ça devrait être suffisant pour réparer le Crève-neige." He seems to offer us a shipment of steam cores. But what the heck is a "Crève-neige"?

0742. Foragers have made contact with French workers again. This team, unfamiliar with circumstances of Crève-neige derailment and only somewhat proficient in French language, was unable to adequately explain situation and is now headed back to camp with French steam cores in tow.

Just as we were about to leave the storehouse with the Steam Cores, a group of workers confronted us, saying something in angrily sounding French. We'll report later. (Contact lost.)

Minutes later, this transmission was received. We have not heard back from the foraging team yet.

1104. Production of steel composites for final stage of generator construction complete. Foundry workers reassigned to machine shop for assembly of final steam exchangers.

1238. When braziers are needed, many will be required to heat entire camp site. Efficient burners will keep us warm for longer as we await extraction.

Extension of heating radius will reduce overall steel consumption of brazier production.

A small valley in which we found a trapped herd of reindeer.

1301. Reindeer numbers depleted. No further known landmarks to explore. Foraging team ordered to report back for reassignment.

With no further sustainable sources of food known on the island, on-site food production will need to be increased. Lumber docks will be refitted as fishing harbour.

1325. To ensure generator core suffers no further setbacks a supercharge is used to allow work to finish by end of day.

Sir, a Workers' Council is asking for... tea. As is customary, company policy entitles engineers to afternoon tea served in the cookhouse and the Workers' Council is asking for this benefit to be extended to everybody. "We're out there, literally doing the heavy lifting. Doesn't that earn us a hot cup of tea every now and then?"

1401. Standard class 1 employee contract amended to include tea stipend per negotiation with union representatives.

1550. Working hours on generator core extended to regular shift to ensure construction finishes today.

Now erect the two parts of Thermal Hull, which will make up the central part of the Generator. After it's done, the Generator will be ready.

1655. Construction of internal components of generator complete. All that remains is to finish external thermal hull.

Materials necessary for construction of first half of thermal hull are available immediately. Some materials for second half were re-purposed to complete core and will need to be replaced tomorrow morning.

Sir, now that the Core of the generator is finished, we were able to seal the whole structure tightly. The toxic gases venting from the source can no longer reach the surface. We don't have to worry about them anymore.

1755. The last of the toxic fumes leaking from underground have dissipated. With the generator core complete, the underground sections of the generator are completely sealed. The ventilation plants are no longer necessary and will be disassembled overnight.

With the heart of the Generator finished, the project is well on its way to completion. Well done.
Amidst political turmoil back home word got out of that most generators won't be operational on time, causing widespread panic. The interim government set up a lottery system, but people claim it's rigged. The situation is volatile and the authorities brace themselves for riots.
The country is sinking into chaos.

1856. Transmission received. It appears the situation back home is worse than our own. The employees cannot be allowed to read this lest our camp follow suit. Stay safe, darling.

I wish you could be here with me to see what we are building here. It is turning out to be truly magnificent. End report.

Really the logical thing to do here is to work hard to finish the Generator, then refuse to leave. I mean, absolute best case scenario is travelling all the way back to London on the icebreaker and then being sent to a different less-familiar Generator (probably built to sub-standard quality) to live, and that's an extremely-optimistic scenario. We already know from the telegrams that you have to literally win the lottery to get a place.

Note that CO2 has a freezing point of -78.5°C. Although the concentration in Earth's atmosphere isn't really enough to get dry ice snow, on a long enough time scale* you would start to get gradual deposition and end up with chunks of dry ice (like the Martian ice caps), probably covering bits of exposed metal at first.

IEC Site 113 Progress Report #016

1903. Some voices in camp call for militia formation but still fail to form majority.

Refit of docks formerly designated for wood shipment to fishing harbour underway, and ventilation plants nearly disassembled.

2222. Fishing harbour complete. Enough employees to enable double shift will be reassigned from redundant positions.

0529. One foraging team returned to camp and reassigned. Still no contact from other team. Both foragers' quarters disassembled.

0843. Effective brazier radius extended for optimization of coverage.

0957. Production order of steam exchangers sufficient for remainder of thermal hull assembly complete.

1348. On-site coal procurement must be improved before sea route is closed by ice.

A group of our people decries your decision to carry on forced medical examinations of prostitutes.
"You punish the victims of a vice, and the men, guilty both of the vice and the suffering of these women, go unpunished. This has to end! Shut down the House of Pleasure!"

1403. Several employees decry previously-signed House of Pleasure law on moral grounds. They have been informed if they wish to register a formal request for company policy change they may requisition copies of Form 518-D from London.

1701. Defunct dock's backlog of timber cleared, and reloading stations dismantled. Personnel reallocated to thermal hull assembly.

0926. No events of note off-hours. Research and development efforts continue this morning.

Sir, it seems that word of the last news from London have spread across the camp.
People whisper all sorts of wild tales, but the most widespread rumour is that everyone will be left here to die. Are you going to do something about it?

1203. Despite best efforts, contents of last transmission received have leaked. They are to be treated as nothing more than rumour and ignored as with other baseless speculations.

Sir, although many people back home are facing starvation, a well-off relative of one of our engineers sent him a large parcel full with treats. Should we hold on to the food? It may stir trouble or, God forbid, fuel a parallel economy.

1400. Daily postal delivery included expensive puddings addressed to a senior engineer. No contraband or seditious literature found among contents. Parcel delivered without modification.

1534. Research team believes we are approaching theoretical limits of what can be developed on-site.

1142. Off-hours pass uneventfully again. Braziers are now efficient enough to reach maximum heat radius while burning less coal than original design.

A construction site worker came up with an ingenious redesign of joints used in scaffolding and formwork. It's a minor and apparently safe change which should significantly advance work. Will you order its adoption?

1402. Union representative left design for alternative joint design on my desk. After consultation with engineers and IEC Supervisor's Manual, the design has been adopted, shifting timetable for thermal hull completion ahead by 10%.

1719. To fully utilize shipping opportunities while routes remain open, docks will be expanded once more.

1818. Retrofit will take place at docks designated for steel receiving only.

2001. Expanded docks allow for placement of third reloading station for maximized income of materials in remaining time.

0700. Temperature has fallen to -20 degrees centigrade. Snow is building up on rooftops.

0715. To avoid potential illness in unheated construction site, braziers are placed around generator circumference.

0917. First braziers operational. Temperature of construction site reevaluated from chilly to liveable.

The last delivery ships will depart in two days and it's obvious that your people know something's afoot. Sedition is in the air and it may be wise to prepare for the worst.

1203. Class 2 employees request security be recruited from among on-site personnel in case of continued unrest. I have not yet committed to anything at this time. Awaiting Company advisement.

1327. Reloading station redesign for maximal efficiency completed, though the design will likely not see use before docks cease operation.

1803. Internal coal burning devices will be placed in fishing harbours and docks as waterfront workplaces are worst affected by cold, with insufficient insulation.

1027. Application of steam exchanger supercharge assisted builders in completion of one half of thermal hull assembly.

1338. Colloquially designated "heater" units now provide even more warmth.

1357. Generator construction complete. It's done. We are finished. It's done, my darling, and soon we will be together again! End report.

Except...

Sir, after great sacrifices, we completed the generator in record time.
Some said it could not be done and yet here it stands, shouting into the wind: "We will endure!" It's time to head home and celebrate our victory... unless we take up the final challenge.
Out of the three generators planned for people of Liverpool, ours is the only one that will serve them. To save as many souls as possible, we could stay and upgrade our generator. Shall we do this?

...a good number of the unionized workers say they refuse to leave. I don't understand. Our contract is fulfilled. The work is over. Why do they want to stay? There are further upgrades the generator plans allow for, but these are listed as optional under the terms of the IEC contract. Is it because they don't know we're about to be trapped by the ice? Or is it because they do?

Minutes of the Seventh Meeting of the ILGWU

Representative Danvers: Excellent work on pushing the joint redesign up to the top, comrades. It made a big difference in letting us all finish the job so early. I don't understand why so many of us voted against increasing overtime pay, though...

Representative Howard: But enough about that! It has come to pass, my friends, the end I warned about at our last meeting. They've extracted as much labour out of us as they can, and now they're going to thank us with a cold death somewhere else. This is our home now, brothers and sisters, and don't let anyone tell you different! We built this home with our own hands! The bodies of our fallen friends rest forever within the foundations of that machine, the machine that would have never been used to save the lives of people like us! But we are here now, and the longer we stay, the more ours this place becomes. We cannot let them force us out!
