I did my degree in food sciences and I took it very seriously and got good marks because I am a dork and was also working through it so had very little time for partying. I then got a masters in Food Appreciation but I believe it's called Enhanced Tastebuds, these days. My job is re-educating people on the internet about liking bad foods but my annual evaluation is soon and I think I'm gonna get written up...

Labour unlikely to meet its £28bn green pledgequote:It is unlikely a Labour government will be able to meet its ambition to spend £28bn a year on green initiatives, a source close to Sir Keir Starmer has told the BBC. "Yah, we're committed to loving over future generations just so we can show what a real mature politician looks like." It's genuinely hard to describe how much I hate these absolute cunts.

I didn't go to university because I didn't really know what I wanted to do when I was 18, be in a band I think, but you don't really need to go to university to do that. Unless you want to be in one of those posh boy bands that had all the gear because Father bought it for you and well if this fails you can just go into finance or work at your Father's law firm or something. I'm doing an Open University degree now because I've got gently caress all else to do. Should have learned a trade.

I really resent the divide between trade and academic education. I have postgraduate degrees in history amd working in a related field but dammit it'd really nice to be able to do electrical work or something that would get you work anywhere.

I went to Uni at 18 because no-one suggested anything different. I'd been just about coping with my depression (which I didn't know I had) until that point, but being hundreds of miles from home with no friends knocked me down a long way. I did get better*, which coincided with me realising the course was complete poo poo and I ended up dropping out/failing (depending on who you talk to). A few years back home working low-paying jobs and I got back into Uni onto a health-related course which led to a job that I enjoy doing, in spite of how hard the government is making it. I do think that the country is massively overdue a rethink of tertiary education. But I also doubt that'll happen until we get some politicians in charge who can see further than the light at the end of their arsehole.

Its always been a bit sad that the one present I wanted was a simple guide to car maintainence when I was in my early teens and my parents flat out said that I wouldn't be getting, it.

I regret to inform you that in undergrad I was an annoying little overachieving nerd who got essays in before they were due and almost always had the highest grades in the class. I got a First. Then I did a Masters and unfortunately the dogshit living situation really did a number on my mental health. Also I was a lot more interested in other things that year* but despite fumbling the first tranche of essays so hard I had a massive panic attack and almost quit on the spot** I held on well enough to finish in the middle of the pack. I have since forgotten most of what I learned because I went really insane instead of getting like a career. * Playing Mass Effect 2 (Also loving my hot, bitchy, crazy gf) ** Later on the second set of papers came back with far stronger grades despite the actual quality of writing and arguments, and my demonstration of knowledge, were pretty much the same in my judgment; All that changed was that I stuffed WAY more references into them. This jaded me severely.

Ode to Joy is an otherwise solid piece that keeps getting ruined by fash. If the Mail had wanted to promote Kieth to their readership instead of demonize him, they could have pointed out that it was also the Rhodesian national anthem.

Sir Keir Starmer will not be drawn into divisive debates about what songs to select for Desert Island Discs, but when he does pick his songs every hard working family will know that he has picked good songs, songs that will unite the British public and celebrate our values, and that is what a future Labour government can promise.

I somehow got into uni and actually enjoyed my first year after it only took me a month to realise that I didn't need to drink my own body weight in alcohol to have a good time. Then I was in a pretty serious car accident in which the driver and passenger of the car that basically rammed us died. The dead driver went to the same uni as I did and shared the same first name so naturally my parents got a letter with condolences on my death and when were they coming to collect my stuff.

Wow. Got our yearly pet insurance quote for the cat for next year: £620! Up over £100 on last year. What's "fun": she's roughly 4 years old near as we can tell. When she was two we noticed blood in her urine. Took her in, they said it looked like a bladder stone. Gave us meds, gave her a scan, confirmed bladder stone. Gave us special food to break it down. Blood went away, got a new scan a couple weeks/months later, stone dissolved by the food & meds, job done. All in all, bill would have been about £1000 without insurance. Now, we have a choice. Stay on our existing insurance, who have jacked up the price due to the incident, but who WILL cover us if she has another bladder stone. Or change to another company (like Waggl who quoted around £200/year), but who will NOT cover any future bladder or urinary issues of any kind, due to her having a single incident over two years ago without a single recurrence or issue since. The devil on my shoulder says to lie to Waggl and bank on them being too lazy to actually follow up with her vet if it ever happens again. But my natural laziness tells me to just stick with who we've already got. Am I missing anything? Or are these really my choices, either pay through the nose to cover preexisting, or switch and hope it never happens again? The fact that ANYONE would want to go to switch to a health model like this for humans, is mind-boggling.

just remembered the biophysics module exam where my class did so loving badly (the lectures were extremely dense and badly structured), the admin made our module mark the highest out of the exam or the coursework (initially a 50:50 split). the coursework was just to write a review of some randomly assigned protein. i think i would have done much worse if i didn't get https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luciferase

Cat insurance: A friend has never insured her pets and never had much by way of bills before, but her elderly cat recently passed away after she has spent literally £'000s on operations, meds etc. So she's looking at pet insurance for elderly pets (as she herself is in her early 70s, she would prefer an older cat so as there's less chance of her shuffling off this mortal coil and somebody somewhere needing to make arrangements for younger cats). Best quote with a specialist older cat insurer is about £150 per month! So on one hand she thought she might try and put that much away each month rather than take out insurance, but on the other hand, she has depleted a large part of her savings on paying out for her now-late kitty. And she doesn't really have £150 pm to spare!

Just out of interest, has anyone here (or knows anyone that has) learned a new trade in their early 30s? I've been on ESA for quite some time for mental health issues but I've been improving recently and think it would be wise to try and learn a trade ahead of future benefit changes potentially throwing me out upon my arse. Before I had kind of felt I missed the boat and got the impression people weren't interested in taking folk on as apprentices past their early 20s or something. Is this how it is in practice? My work history consequently sucks pretty hard and I think the last place I worked doesn't even exist anymore, so I suppose I'd need to start with some volunteer work or something just to get a hold of some basic references? The easy option is to bury my head in the sand and hope I can keep convincing the DWP to leave me in peace but I figure poo poo is only going to be even harder down the line if I leave it til then. I'm up in Scotland if that affects anything.
