the prius' vcu is an enigma and toyota says to hook up to the terminals in the engine bay when jumping, and 100% of the fried vcus i've heard of involved connecting something directly to the 12v. tapping a trickle charger on the 12v might be fine, but i'd want to hear it from a prius specialist or toyota themselves before doing it with mine

how do i research truck bed accessories? im trying to find regular people racks and stuff but poking around has mostly shown me dumb pseudo military tonka truck poo poo and tbqh id love to have a simple contractor style ladder rack. and a bed cover. its a 2010 tacoma access cab with the 6’ bed so this poo poo definitely exists but i dont know where to even start looking.

my big scenario is trying to haul two canoes, and 2-3 bikes simultaneously. i figure a ladder rack and a in bed bike stand would do fine. id like to be able to remove the rack and just do a tonneau cover most of the time but im open to suggestions. i just am really trying to avoid the XXTREME 4x4 AMERICA#1 poo poo

Are there good ways of figuring out wheel offset for a car you don’t have yet? Have ordered a vehicle that I’m expecting this winter and want to order another set of wheels to have ready with snow tires when it comes, but my usual go-to Tirerack shows wheel options that have offsets all over the place and I don’t want to get something way off of stock

Trying to find Toyota PT218-42061-08 in pacific blue metallic for a 2009 rav 4. It's the spare tire hardcover.

It's discontinued. My parther would like the color to match, and all i can find is primer color for 200, which I assume I need to drop another 100 or more on painting.

Is there a place that carries discontinued or lightly used? It's a super popular color for super popular car.

Search for OEM wheels on ebay or part sites, they'll usually have it listed or pictures of the back of the wheel. Most new vehicles are high positive.

If it's the kind of car to have enthusiasts (which is almost every car, even the ones you'd be shocked someone cares about) there's probably a forum for it that has all the details of the stock wheel/tire offerings listed.

I have a 2014 jeep grand cherokee (160,000 mi) and according to my mechanic the transmission is done. I don't have a cost estimate for what that would be right now, but I imagine its gonna be like 5 grand or something thats basically the trade in value of the vehicle.

What the hell do I do with this thing now? Pay for the repair for the trade in? Have it junked?

The thing is pretty decent condition. Ive had a lot of work done one it the past 3 years and I think i've had enough. I don't yet have the quote on how much this shop wants for the replacement. I suppose I should call around a few places and see what kind of quotes I can get for it. I have a nasty scratch from a bollard on one door and the front of the vehicle but I would consider it fairly minor cosmetic. Otherwise its fine. I imagine my trade in value for this thing is in the 6k range. KBB shows 4k to 7.7 k for cost in my area.

So i rented a car from Avis over the summer in italy, and about 30 miles from the airport, the clutch suddenly and totally failed. I couldn’t shift into any gear (i could move the stick, but the gear wouldn’t engage). Now Avis is trying to make me pay $1200 for the repair, claiming I damaged it. There wasn’t any grinding, burning, smells, etc—it just suddenly failed. So far, Amex is taking their side.

Anyone have any tips on fighting this? Is it possible to prove that I could not have destroyed a clutch in such a short amount of time?

e: it was a VW T-roc, fwiw. Are there any reports of these or other golf platform cars from 2022 with defective clutches?

You need to decide if this is worth fighting for. It sounds like you need a lawyer or publicity if you’re going to get out of this. I dealt with a similar situation and a dealership, and I simply had to pay up. That sucked, but I didn’t have the resources to fight it.

To be clear, you could have done this, but it’s unlikely. You’d need to slip the hell out of the clutch to really ruin it like that. You don’t seem to have much of a choice on what to do though.

Its uncommon for one to blow up all on its own but rentals get beat on. This looks a lot harder to fight than when they went after me, keep notes on any phone calls or communicate over email, note if it felt weird or made any noises when you picked it up, if you have a lot of experience driving stick it might help to mention it so they cant claim inexperience caused it.

They went after me for the tow and tires on a rental they gave me with 1/4 of the rubber missing on the insides of both front tires, I didn't see it until daylight the morning after I picked it up and because I refused to drive any further on tires you can see the insides of I got charged for the tow. They charged me for the tires because Avis, even with -10 deg camber on the rental I don't think the tires could wear that fast. A few very clear emails and they refunded, you can fight them and might win and they will probably try and say the matter is closed before it actually is.

There's no way I would be ok getting stuck with that. They may be under the letter of the law in the contract you signed, and legally they are entirely able to charge you, but I would be huffing and signing up for social media sites I don't use to figure that out. Read the contract, write up a few sentences on why you shouldn't be stuck with it, send it out to the highest level person you can find, and that may be the recourse available to you.

However, it's also in Euroland, and I have no idea what rights corporations and customers have compared to in the states.

e: I'm not sure what backwoods Avis Italy location you rented from, or if this is common for Euro car clutch failures on rentals. If it's not that common, the first thing I'd do (without going Karen) is try to reach a call center person through their toll free worldwide (or Italy specific idk) customer care line. Then, I'd go through the painfully lengthy process as quickly and politely as possible to go up the supervisor chain. It shouldn't take too long to get to a USA (or wherever you may be) based person that can tell you if they always 100% do this for clutch failures on rentals, or if this is something improper done by the Avis location. If at that point they tell you 100% clutch failures are always on the customer, that may be your answer.

It's interesting that AmEx is on their side, it makes me think someone at AmEx's insurance contractor for this has never seen a clutch failure and Avis just said "mechanical failure here's proof" and that's why AmEx is denying it.

2017 Subaru Outback, 3.6R

I took my wife's car to the Subaru mechanic recently for unrelated work and they found that the camshaft carrier seal was leaking oil (the tire place that put on her winter tires also noticed the leak). Apparently it's an engine-out procedure to fix that involves splitting the block and removing / reapplying sealant. Their recommendation was to beg to Subaru of America to get them to fix it under warranty because the car, while over 5 years old, has under 60,000 miles. It seems like a completely unreasonable thing to ask because the car is clearly out of warranty, but apparently Subaru sometimes decides they like you. Is there a procedure for that? Should I take it to a dealership first?

Additionally, I got suckered into buying the Carmax warranty when I bought the car. It seems more likely they could be persuaded to pay out, but I feel less than confident about whatever Carmax authorized service center doing engine-out work on my wife's car. Am I underestimating the average mechanic?

Option 3 is to just check the oil frequently and top it up when required, and option 4 is to trade it in.

I'm Canadian and don't know what Carmax is but if you paid for a warranty it makes sense to me that you should go through them. Why are they splitting the block to do camshaft seals? Those are in the head so it seems really strange to me, I'd assume it's basically like doing a timing chain since you have to remove the cam(s).
