Okay, so what’s the thing with prairie dogs that would make them bad pets? Y’know, like how Otters rub their anal glands on everything they like and how Foxes like to pee in their owner’s drinks. There has to be a reason why species of adorable little WAHOOer pups haven’t been domesticated.

They're very large rodents. They pee everywhere and chew everything but like four times as much as a rat cause they're four times the size.

Also unlike rats they need to be free roaming or in a very large enclosure. Like 'do you have a spare room you can fill with hay up to your thighs' kind of large.

Is that separate from the strain of Monkey Pox they carried in 01, or somewhere close to that? Cause they gave people Monkey Pox at around then.

Yeah, I stayed over in a place in South Africa once where they kept a family of them as outside pets in a very large yard. They were super tame to the point where they would come up to you for pets, but they absolutely will piss on anything and everything, including the person currently feeding them. Apparently they're also quite good for keeping your yard free of scorpions.

guinea pigs are actually domesticated and have a similar behavior when they are happy if you need to fill the large rodent niche in your life

It was great when a band of mongooses would come by my tent in Kenya. After they passed you knew you were snake free for the moment.

Also fun to give them an egg, because they break it by throwing it backwards between their legs. Also confusing the hell out of them if you give them a boiled egg, because it doesn’t break the way they expect it - they still end up eating it, eventually.

Mongooses are extremely underrated safari animals.

In case of predators who don't mind porcupine quills but are afraid of rattlesnakes.

Heeeeeey

Everything that isn't afraid of porcupines is afraid of rattlesnakes.

Edit: also this prevents them from losing quills in needless fights if they can just hide and shake to avoid predators.

The thing is it differed by rodents - rats were pretty meh whereas wild mice would just go hog wild for ages

my mom was in the hospital for 11 days and my dog got lonely. she will rarely ever sleep next to me, she'll sleep NEAR me but she won't cuddle up to me. but because mom isn't here for her to do that with(she is very protective of mom and will sleep right up besides her), she deigned me "good enough" to cozy up to for a bit.
