hell yeah that was relaxing. love the lady hand-painting the numbers on the lens. maybe they were etched in beforehand idk

when i was a kid i wanted to be the guy that designed all the assembly lines. not sure how i lost track of that, missed opportunities.

these days i'm more into being an artisan in a traditional craft. this looks promising

There was somewhat of a cooperation with the channel Looking Glass Universe.

As in, mostly 3b1b gave her some advice, and they synced the release of the videos.

I won't link to it, it's two 30 min videos that meander quite a lot before they get to the point, but they had an interesting conclusion that 3b1b didn't mention.

Everything 3b1b mentions is based around the math of plane waves - infinitely long waves of light. Because that makes the math hell of a lot simpler.
But what it doesn't directly explain is why, when you send a PULSE of light through water, the front of the pulse is also slowed down. Based on the plane wave explanation, you might expect it's going at C, but just with a shifted phase. That's not what happens though.

So, she ended up trying to make a computer simulation. Which was very hard because the math of pulses of light is much more complicated than those of plane waves. It seemed to be that at the very front of the pulse, the secondary light from the electrons completely cancelled out the original light through destructive interference. This happened also for materials with a negative refraction index, which is why light still arrives slower than C through a material like that.

She couldn't really completely prove this, though. And she tried to get in touch with other experts but nobody else could or wanted to help her either. Apparently the Feynman lectures don't really explain it either.

I expect now the vid is out someone is going to publish a more concrete reply soon. Either way it's interesting to think about.

When I first heard about them I thought there was no physical way that they could work and it had to be a scam, but then somewhere I read something claiming that for some colorblind people, the problem is that the frequency ranges their cones respond to overlap slightly, so for people with that specific problem it's possible to improve their color vision simply by filtering out the overlapping parts of the ranges

But is that fake and it's just a scam after all?

PokeJoe

I don't know how you could filter anything and fix the problem. Something that might be possible would to be to use a diffraction grating or something specifically tuned to the separate missing wavelengths the person can't see and then do some technology magic to shift them to a wavelength they can see. It wouldn't bring back the missing color but it could add some missing depth. They would probably need a few electronic components to do this though it couldn't be a pair of simple sunglasses

I was under the impression it was like this, effectively creating greater separation of colours from a subjective point of view

idk color is super fuckey. especially once you get out of our lovely electronic displays, they can only reproduce like a third, or maybe a bit more of the possible human gamut.

that's why you gotta go look at art in person
