I think a lot of the fans of these people just don’t understand what plagiarism is, and especially how much work is involved in creating an original piece of research. The creators themselves absolutely know what they’re doing, though.

Yeah, a lot of people think plagiarism (an academic and ethical concept) is the same as copyright (a legal concept) They’re not, but I think a ton of people make that conflation
