I'm gonna be an animation pedant and point out there's not much crossover between these two shows. The creator of the dragon prince was part of the original Airbender show, but not Korra. I wasn't able to find anyone else in directing/writing positions who worked on Korra either, and its animated by a studio in Vancouver instead of the Korean 2d studios that worked on Avatar and Korra.

re: Korra opening the way to She-Ra, I'm going to say "eh, kinda sorta." She-Ra had to spend most of its run basically in the same state as Steven Universe, where there were clearly gay characters around, gay feelings being expressed, etc. but they couldn't say it on the show. Like there's two gay princesses that were sitting around for the entire series, occasionally popping up to contribute to a fight, sometimes not around at all. I don't recall either of them getting more than 5 speaking lines until the 4th or 5th season, and they didn't confirm they were a married couple until the 5th and last season. The only real characterization they get is in the 5th season episode where Netossa takes a central role because Spinnerella was kidnapped and brainwashed. Katra's obvious feelings for Adora are only hard confirmed in the final season near the end, too. I think the final season is also the only time we get a trans side character?

They were pushing for more behind the scenes and did technically get more than Korra had, but when it's all coming out at the last minute I get the feeling it's because they were being held back from doing it before.

It's frustrating that a slow burn complicated relationship like the one between Catra and Adora is, in the present media climate, indistinguishable from a censored depiction of a more overt relationship.

Creators of queer stories should have the freedom to tell romantic and sexual narratives that involve discovery, denial, hesitation, or overwhelming complications without having their deliberate decisions framed by the audience as cowardice, censorship, or capitulation.

I harp about this a lot but I wish people found better short-hands for "Souls-like" and "Metroidvania" and "immersion sim" or simply just described the gameplay loop. With the first two, people may get the gist of but it's often applied to games unfairly because they share like one or two things Dark Souls did but not enough to be called such and at this point most people who have played Metroid and/or Castlevania are probably mostly over 30. But immersion sim is such a massive encompassing label that just about any game that doesn't have a linear structure to its combat situations can be called one that it's functionally useless. Is it an immersive sim because if you blow up a barrel with physical force it'll spill oil in which you can set fire to? Because you can crawl through vents instead of going through the front door? An enemy shoots at you but hits a civilian so the cops show up and shoot the enemy for you? Your sim poo poo themselves to death because they ate food they were too lazy to clean up? These are just useless labels and have become just some quick and easy way to describe something without spending the effort to describe it.

Don't mean to pick on Joseph there but he used two of those three back-to-back and it triggered me. Is Lies of P the Dark Souls of B game Dark Souls?!

There were hints but they could have been more overt to be sure. This was before streaming really took off so they have to play to the rules of the network. Korra had to crawl so shows like She-Ra could sprint.

I think it's easy to take for granted now, when we've had over a decade of more overt LGBTQ+ representation in kids' media, but I remember the ending of Korra being a big deal back in the day. Korra and Asami holding hands and meaningfully staring into each other's eyes like they're about to kiss might not seem like much today but I remember originally watching that scene and being all "Holy poo poo, are they actually gonna do this?".

I think there is a discussion to be had about how a larger percentage of the queer representation we've seen in kids media over the past decade has primarily been focused on f/f couples*, but trying to use this as evidence that lesbians "have it easier" than gay men is absolutely bonkers and, in Somerton's case specifically, really undermines the idea of solidarity that drives the LGBTQ+ community.

Also, what the gently caress is up with Somerton's obsession with gay nazis? He's got some dark Tom of Finland vibes going on with that...

I don't mind Catra's character arc on its own because it does also tie into her complicated feelings regarding her mother figure, upbringing, and the golden child favoritism shown towards Adora. As a messy character, and on its own I think it's a fine arc. Within the context of all the other queer content needing to be veiled, I wonder what more we could've gotten if they were allowed to be more open across the whole series.

She mainly uses her experience as a jumping-off point to examine how society in general constructs gender and race in order to steal labor from people without properly compensating them, and to look at how/what conservatives think about that.

Just remembered a bizarre example of YouTube plagiarism I stumbled upon last year. It's a sizable true crime youtube channel but can't remember its name - it's an American white guy talking to the camera with a greenscreened background of grey. I was recommended his video on the Port Arthur massacre and put it on to kill time at work. I googled "Martin Bryant" (the prepetrator) and the first result was an entry written about him for the Criminal Minds wiki. Didn't know about the show and was confused why it would have an entry and clicked on it for shits and giggles and noticed the video was section by section the same as the page. What really sealed it was the entry had a section called Conspiracy or something along those lines and the video ended with a portion about about conspiracy theories which I've never heard of despite being familiar with the crime.

It looks like that final section has been edited out of the wiki sometime in the past year. Wouldn't have noticed without that section and probably wouldn't have thought much of it but in the past I'd been recommended that guy's videos and I'm pretty sure he gets in the 100s of thousands of views per upload.

You can't describe the gameplay loop of an immersive sim, because that would ruin it. A lot of it's use is having a "thinking mans genre", now that RPGs and stealth games are mainstream.
It's why it can be used simultaneously for late 90's/early 00's FPS games, Action-RPGs and Stealth games with little in common, because it's very often just used as a way to separate the games I like from the games enjoyed by the plebs. How often are games like SiN or Skyrim brought up as immersive sims? Pretty much never because they are either pretty bad or regarded as dumbed down for babies, despite being very similar to others mechanically.
Sure you could use it for the Deus Ex style Action-RPG sub genre, but then why is Thief considered one? It's a pretty standard ( if very good and foundational) Stealth Action game.

For Souls-like and Metroidvania, you're going to need to travel ~300 years back in time to beat up Johann Gottfriend Schnabel for coining Robinsonade for all the Robinson Crusoe copycats.

Various sources say ad revenue from a YouTube video with millions of views caps at around $30K, but it’s hard to say for sure as I imagine there are a ton of variables. Especially when you consider in-video advertising deals. Swell Entertainment actually does a fantastic video every year breaking down her YouTube revenue, and you can see how much those ad deals pay out. I imagine they pay even more to a larger channel like Somerton or IH.
