The first is to be born in Joseon.
Absolutely love Ditto but haven't been so hot on New Jeans' newer releases.

Chill Kill otoh has been warming on me a lot though. Not as good as Psycho but imo RV's best release since then.

I finally got around to listening to the Babymonster song and it sounds weirdly 2nd gen?

Anyway, I've been meaning to ask what the deal is with tripleS, I've heard a few songs but they all seem to be different sub units and there seems to be some sort of crypto/blockchain angle?

In short:

It's the new project from the guy behind Loona, and it really feels like the natural evolution of what they were originally before he parted ways with that company. There are currently 16 members, and will eventually be 24 total. Each comeback is a sub-unit of a certain number of members with the participants, songs, and concepts voted on by fans using their app. The app sells digital photocards that gives votes to the fans (this is where the blockchain crap comes in for verifying votes).

Despite the way this all sounds, the company has handled it all really well so far and even the blockchain nonsense has the upside of providing a direct income to the girls (they get a % of the sales), so fans don't have to worry about what happened with Loona happening again (not being paid a penny after 5-6 years). The sub-unit structure also means the group can have more frequent releases without over-working the members as they rotate in and out of groups.

They also have a daily vlog series that's pretty good content, and the first episode of their first variety show just came out which is already some good chaos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yb0GtMc9Axc

Aside from all of that and most importantly, their discography is already top tier after just a year. Definitely check out their b-sides.

My big issues with the group are:

The nft poo poo could be easily dropped - fan voting stuff and other similar things existed before this and there isn't an actual benefit here. Every sort-of benefit isn't inherently tied to them existing, you can do all of it without it.

The subgroup based thing is basically just pivoting towards the same model as the huge japanese idol groups. While its good to not overwork your artists, these sorts of setups tend to be more of a "the popular members get more work" instead of being any sort of benefit aimed at the artists. Notably, this is the same claim that was made about loona (big group, lots of sub-groups), and you can see how that turned out.

Frustratingly their music releases have all been good. Also as noted, they've got a good amount of supplemental media so if you get into them you've got plenty of content. If you like male groups NCT did a somewhat similar thing, it comes up now and then.

They have big investment from businesses in SK including SM. The app makes a poo poo-ton of money from people buying votes judging by the amount of votes done each round (another takeaway from Japanese groups, but without the physical waste at least).

Absolutely. At least there is no investment angle to it like most crypto/nft BS. It's literally only using the blockchain as a ledger for voting, but as you said that could be done in any number of other ways. From what I understand, a big driver of it is because of voting manipulation being so rampart in the industry and the legal issues that have come from it for companies, so this gives them an easy hand wave of any accusations for that. It's also easy tech-bro bait for investment, as mentioned above, probably even more so because they've managed to turn it into a profitable venture unlike the pump and dump scams that are all over anything crypto.

Again, this is something MH has done really well with so far. The pre-debut unit of 4 members wasn't decided by a vote AFAIK, and the only votes for members so far were which members would go to which split of 8, so all were included, as well as one for which members would do a special ballad release but it was split into equal groups again.

Notably, this is the same claim that was made about loona (big group, lots of sub-groups), and you can see how that turned out.

Loona's subunits never really did anything after the full group debut, and Chuu's independent success had nothing to do with that concept and was in spite of the company (which was all run by people not involved with TripleS).

Also I would say not over working them doesn't really apply in TripleS' case because I've seen no indication that's the intended goal. Krystal Eyes sub-unit members all did Rising + two sub-units this year, and of Krystal Eyes members Seoyeon had Queendom Puzzle and the US tour, and Jiwoo had Queendom puzzle, school finals, and now ballad sub-unit and the Australia tour. All of that is in addition to the many signal videos they were on. I mean, Kotone and Jiwoo were roommates and they've said they basically never had a conversation with each other because when one came home the other was asleep and that was it for the entire time they were roommates.
