Not going to lie, but for some reason 1992-1993 is a blur to me. I can remember a lot of random stuff from other years, but not that 12-18 month window. I don't know it was overall (outside a few major events) a rather boring window of the decade or I was just too detached to pay attention to anything.

I think this song was still big in 1993

'93 did have some bangers, I remember that was pretty well into grunge being popular which was a nice change from the usual pop/rock stuff

Fast food places had those crazy, multi-colored "Lisa Frank after a bender" designs on everything

Had some of the best TV shows IMHO - Power Rangers, X-Files, Animaniacs, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, BTAS

MTV still had music videos but had also branched into animation with Liquid Television

Riding bikes with my friends everywhere without any adult supervision or tracking for literal hours at a time

Being in 7th grade & working with a computer the first time in the library, it had like 7-8 Apple all-in-ones (don't recall the exact model but looked like the Macintosh Plus/SE)

Radio and MTV would play whatever was popular 15 times a day for months at a time. What else are you going to listen to?

Obviously there was non-mainstream stuff as well, but you actually had to go looking for it, which was hard for a sheltered suburban kid. College radio was about the only window to the world in that regard.

I feel like the early-mid 90s starting at '93 became a sort of a cultural black hole for a few years. People just idk... existed without any major happenings, akin to the end of the '70s era or the second half of 2010s. Patterns, ozone holes, aliens? Is the next dark age due in *checks watch* tyool 2030? Only pseudointellectuals and the OP might tell.

The OJ Simpson trial dominated the media landscape in the mid 90s but that's arguably not a "major happening" compared to the LA riots early in the decade.

Also the Oklahoma City bombing was 1995, which was kind of the last of a string of right-wing terrorist attacks taking out large numbers of people.

It's easy to think the internet is radicalizing people, but there was a pretty significant subculture of conspiracy theorists who cropped up after the fall of the soviet union and were livid about Clinton, NAFTA, the NWO and a bunch of other baloney.

Earwicker
Jan 6, 2003

in 1993 there was the attack on David Koresh's cult in the Waco compound, which was definitely seen as a "major happening" at the time.

the year before that was Ruby Ridge

militias and paramilitaries have existed in the US for a long time, but the early 90's is the beginning of when the precursors to the current wave of right wing nationalist militias (many of which had existed for decades prior) started getting real media attention, and setting a lot of precedent for the poo poo that is going on today.

During '93 I was treated for an ice hockey injury for about eight months of the year. Then they finally realized and diagnosed it as cancer. I'd say more, but I'll have to save it for for the What Was 1994 Like thread.

So much of 1993 is colored by the memory of what i was going through. I did, however, have a 3DO during that time. For better or worse.
