This is a shot in the pitch black dark here, but does anyone know what song is playing during the party in Ricksy Business, last episode of the first season?

Closest I can come up with is that they played around with the Drake/Kanye/Lil Wayne/Eminem song Forever.

I was mulling over why I loved the episode and so many of you didn't, and I think it comes down to this:

Film school.

The joke in Get Schwifty that really brought this home for me was "I care now. You made me caaare moooore."

Which is, obviously, a writing joke. He's just saying the beat in the script instead of having actual dialog. And this whole-rear end episode is an outcrop of that. Go through the beats of an action blockbuster/fantasy movie, but do it with the most loving ridiculous thing you can think of: a 90s rapper from a planet of letters swearing revenge on a planet of numbers.

I don't think people don't get this, mind. It's not some grand secret I've uncovered. It just lands better for me because I spent an entire year of college studying screenwriting.

Haha. lol. Naah the one I'm thinking of is the song that starts right as it cuts to the party and then continues a while as guests come. But it was fun to open up that link.

On the topic of standout episodes in later seasons, I'm wondering how divisive the spaghetti one from this season has been. I can see nerds arguing about whether it was an attack on 'ethical' meat with reference to Dan Harmon's politics & lifestyle. And yup, that's happening. The real issue is to what extent it's manipulative and using these issues for comedy with a bad irreverence-to-humour payoff.

I've also come across someone saying something like 'Life doesn't have to be a fairy tale to be beautiful. Fred lived his life in the gray zones and most of us do too.' And that's a beautiful take on its own. The Oasis cover was of course cloying and sentimental.* The chord progressions, the vocals, and how they used the verses and chorus at least. But that refrain? 'You and I are gonna live for-ever'? The juxtaposition of that refrain with what's happening on screen is superb. Brings that part of the episode to an A- or even an A.** It was more real than Rick in his garage after losing by girlfriend. And obviously more so than the burial in the back yard.

*You can trust me on this. I took Oasisology for two years at community college. So I get these subtle uses of their music in the show, which might fly above most people's heads.

**What the duck was up with the strawberry jam though? I'm not caught up. Did they really put in some mediocre callback in their most serious scene in years?

Oh wow. I've gazed too long and have turned into a Rick and Morty earnest-poster.

i don't care about plot progression but it would be cool if there was actual inventiveness in the writing instead of lazy references to 80s properties that the characters are then self-aware about

like, golly gee wizz, an entire episode where the characters say the word "kuato" a lot. what a thrill.

Kauto wasn’t the worst episode ever but they kind of ran the joke in to the ground by the end - when you get to the end and the Russian doll kauto I was like “I get it already”

I've watched it now. Unmortricken definitely the best one so far and presumably overall this season. I'm glad Rick Prime is gone. Evil Morty is leaps and bounds a better rival. Especially if they're not trying to off each other and just have slightly different agendas they won't fully compromise on. But that's besides the point because our Rick only has one real nemesis.

Mr Nimbus might not as smart or as powerful as Rick. But something prevents Rick from going all out on him. Whether that's plot armour or Rick not wanting to be hassled by seals and cops in every dimension he ever travels to, he can't kill him and he can't just brush him off.

I think they were trying to do the thing where the joke gets old and then you keep telling it until wraps back around to being funny again.

I liked the bit, the joke was that it's a stupid, pointless series of the same reveal over and over, which the characters were also annoyed by. Really liked the kuato episode other than the over-long club scene.

Yeah, once it decided to switch to a Taken parody it was a solid 5 or 6 out of 10 with a few jokes that landed near the end. Club scene was the worst of Harmon's reference only humor though. So many little sight gags they could have done about a kauto party and we just get a bunch people saying kauto.

The Die Hard one wrapped back around to working because felt a bit like they were making fun of that bad habit with Summer not knowing how to do references for most it and just screaming Die Hard a lot.

also the Die Hard ep was the b-plot, we had the dissection of Morty's personality and soul as the a-plot throughout that one

The second episode of the show is an Inception parody that mentions inception several times, so I do think it's weird that people single out a reference to a thing being why they didn't like it when the far more likely culprit is that it just didn't blow wind up their skirt for some other reason or several some other reasons, and the window dressing is just more obvious and easy to describe.

Eh, the Inception parody/reference felt like an actual episode though. It made some jokes with the premise even if it was still doing some of Harmon's meta stuff too. Also spliced in some Freddy Kreuger to spice it up once it started to run out of steam. Compare it to something like the Heist episode where it just beat a bad parody into the ground.

Kind of torn on the Ice T one since it was stupid in a kind of fun way but it needed to shift things around a little more. If it was in a worse season I'd probably rank it lower, but it felt fine to have a little dumb filler since they're on a decent run.

Kuato Summer even flirts with a Scanners bit right at the end but it's too late

Inception parody episode was 'Lawnmower Dog' as the co-plot. there was quite a lot going on in that ep, drat

I laughed entirely too much at the increased killing power brought to bear on the constantly-resurrecting vikings, how they were into it at first and then omg what are we fighting? until it finally just started throwing rockets at their mead hall over and over as they respawned.

and I don't know why, but the idea of attacking their enemies by dropping Bigfoot and a dummy mode clone of Rick into the satanic temple or the porn mag offices was fuckin hilarious

really good episode imo
